First I'm way better behind the lens than before it but here are a few suggestions that might improve your results
Some will be obvious and some not.
Getting the obvious done with first, no toilets, in fact maybe try to keep out of the bathroom.
Clutter and mess doesn't help. think of your background.
If you can, get the camera out of your hands, do so.
The suction phoneholders for cars are useful or maybe a mini tripod. You can get a bluetooth remote for under £10 for the bay or amazon. The vol control on wired earphones used to work as a remote but check if it still does. Use the timer, it might help
Lighting is important. Don't use flash if you can help it. If you can use natural light, see what rooms in your home get the sun and what time. Windows are great for side lighting. If you're going to use artificial lighting then the overhead is the worst. Try lights from the side or many will tell you that facing a light gives best results. Hence the ring lights that youtubers use. Bathrooms often have very harsh lighting.
When it comes to composition, angles are great. Avoid the mughsot. For the portrait, try the over the shoulder pose, tilting your head up a little smoothes a face out. Look at the lens not at you
Editing and filters. The only app I have experience with was VSCO, I don't even know if they're still a thing. They had some of the most professional looking filter for smartphones. Crop but not too tight. Maybe adjust the contrast and saturation. less can be more. When you get to a certain age b&w is kinder to our skin.
Relax, you got to be comfortable. Maybe listen to your favourite standup or music. Smile, not fake cheesy smile but a natural one, Laugh. Experiment a little, see what works and go from there. |

If all that fails.....add some Snapchat bunny ear filters and you're good to go.
