Rude receptionists

Is it part of the job description of a doctors receptionist to be as rude as possible. I was just yelled at down a corridor by a receptionist telling me I was late and the doctor probably would not see me.

I was in fact 5 mins late, but kept waiting at the reception for 10 mins whilst I could hear her complaining in a back room. Also I was the only patient there! None before me, none arrived whilst I was there.

The doctor was lovely, but when I came back to make another appointment she was as helpful as a chocolate fire guard. In fact stopped talking to me mid sentence to complain to a doctor about the heating.

I know I have lost weight but I am far from invisible.

Any how rant over. But is it me or are a high number of receptionists just plain rude. We are all busy but manners take no time at all. X

I love it when you phone and they ask what your symptoms are, my reply "can you tell me when you qualified and I will tell you my symptoms, I'm phoning as I want to see a doctor!". I'm popular at the surgery as you can imagine.

they will be expected to screen and attempt to prioritise appointments, it will be difficult when dealing with people feeling under the weather.

the skill will be doing it firmly with sensitivity.

Some have some sort of doctor complex where they presume they have enough medical knowledge to decide whether you are indeed in need of medical care or not.

I spent a while in farming and was thus a regular visitor to Basingstoke A+E .

The dragon whom they employed as a receptionist was in a class of her own and no matter how much I was in pain the crackle of static between us was almost audible .

She would loudly ask why you had the audacity to waste her time loudly in front of a waiting room of fellow sufferers.

There was no privacy if you had sores on your cock or anything you were not too keen on being broadcast .

Mostly she would not even look at you and would carry the inter_iew on in a bored production line manner.

I once went after a little argument with a bull who threw me twenty odd feet across a building and a week later I was having palpitations , it turned out he had cracked my sternum and bruised my heart.

I got the usual "next " and without looking up she asked , pityingly , what was up with me.

I replied with what had happened and she witheringly asked whether it was a football or rugby ball .

I lost it a bit and was in mid rant when I was grabbed and chucked onto an ECG .

I had been there before with smashed fingers or head wounds ,when a BSE cow jumped on my head, and left a lake of blood in casualty , but this time they took my so seriously they even frightened me .

Still here though despite the moo faced dragon and her stupid questions .

They do seem to be as there is one at my local surgery who has been there for years, stuck up snotty bitch who always seems to look at people with such disdain and treats them the same. Plus why are there so many when all they seem to do is stand around and chat???

Having worked for a gp for years I know that some receptionists are cows and a lot more are doing a difficult job under a lot of pressure. If they ask your symptoms they are doing so because they are told to in order to find out whether you need an urgent appointment or maybe even an emergency ambulance. They aren't being nosey or trying to stop you seeing a doctor.

Some patients are incredibly rude and the receptionists generally can't fight back. They have no power to alter the rules they have to work by but do have to put up with a huge amount of crap from the public for generally low wages.

Give them a break and try to be nice to them

You have to realise that these ladies are only human, and when faced with dealing with a lot of numpties on a daily basis for years on end (and there are a lot of numpties in my experience of being employed at a surgery), they tend to take the _iew that everyone is a numpty unless otherwise proved...very sad but very true

What is it with some receptionists, they seem to think it is their job to make the doctors jobs easier by not letting anyone through the doors.

I went to a local surgery on a saturday for the emergancy clinic as I had lumps on a tescticle and it was swollen, there was a big queue behind me and the receptionsist kept going on about it has to be an emergency and I could be wasting the doctors time.

I had my dr appointment friday saw a surgeon thrusday had the op on the next day on the friday, it is a good job I stood my ground on that one.

Don't get me wrong, all the others at this surgery are lovely and very helpful.

But I have just had my faith restored, I nipped into oxfam to donate clothes and was greeted by the two loveliest ladies. Now their shop was freezing but both had fabulous smiles and even gave me money off vouchers for m@s. result! X

Had to giggle at my one of the receptionist at dads surgery,he was in pain no movement at all laid flat oot...could not move and as dad is a reg at the drs and also a personal friend of one dr and one other receptionist they tend to know his symptoms so he usually gets sorted ...but me thinks she must be new as her response to mum ringing and asking if there was any chance she could have a word with doctor after surgery was" can he come down and see him later"

not sure which part of hes on the fall in pain n canny move she didn't understand...

I moved drs recently and all the staff are great ,friendly and caring and instead of me dreading the drs i now don't mind going at all...good bunch of staff here so thumbs up to them i say

We book online (also renew scripts) and sign in using a terminal - never see the receptionist.
