Why are some so absolutely shit at doing what they're paid for?

Unlike many we have no issues with Evri and our Royal Mail guy is a saint.

But the rest? Yodel, DPD & DHL in particular are as unreliable as many a Fab meet it seems (not ours of course, we're highly efficient on that front ).

Parcel due today now not coming til sometime Monday when it's a part meant to be fitted at 9am Monday morning.

Fuck all use at all.

It's like arranging a meet, shaving your bits and pampering and preening yourself, lying back on the bed all ready for your meet to rock up and do the sex.....and then the fucker doesn't show and says "sorry, I'll be there in 3 days instead - keep that boner ready for me".

No. Just fucking no. It'll be long gone by then and there's no chance of arranging anything else in time either.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

Or like when they bang on your backdoor and then leave before you get there.

Selfish.

The company I used to work for used DPD for all small outgoing goods. Probably a full pallet every day.

The regular driver was fine but always under serious pressure.

He averaged between 130-150 drops a day and needed 2 helpers to hit those targets.

They are mostly self employed using their own vehicles.

When he was on hols the replacement drivers were only capable of doing 100-120 drops per day due to the size of their van or simply being on a different contract.

It’s worth recognising that courier and delivery drivers are some of the most exploited workers. They have to deliver a shit tonne of parcels in very little time to get paid. Check out Ken Loach’s film ‘Sorry We Missed You’ for a look at how terrible the job can be.

Oh I get that. Particularly Yodel and Evri. Our Evri guy never misses a delivery window and we're in the middle of butt fuck nowhere.

But when you've paid for a guaranteed delivery time and it's not going to be met, causing a major ballache then that's on them, not me.

The most annoying thing is that on every courier website there's a phone number that literally says call this number to speak to customer services.

They're all automated. Then they cut you off. What's the point in telling people to call when there's no fucker answering the phone?

Yeah, I hear you. I've definitely experienced a few of those. Oh, hang on were you still talking about delivery drivers?

When i was a self employed amazon driver i would regularly make make £56 for 4 hours. I was self employed using my own fuel. I would have at least 70 parcels to do in that time. When you then have at least 30 min drive to the first drop your down to 3.5 hours to do it. If you went over your time you didnt get paid the over time and it went against your rating so you didnt see as many high paying blocks. Often i would make less than minimum wage, im self employed so it was just the short straw

Its very stressful as every block is different and some areas are completely new and satnavs dont always pick up addresses especially new build sites. You can spend 10 minutes just driving around looking for streets and hope the signs are visible. You go down some inner city streets where there is no parking. What do you do park 3 streets away and walk adding an extra 5-10 mins onto that stop. Leave it in the road with you hazards on and hope you answer the door before someone comes, park on a drop kurb and risk getting verbally abused which happens a lot? What do you do?

Then you are constantly worrying is my car going to get broken into because they can see a car full of parcels?

If you dont answer the door should i leave it with a neighbour, and then risk getting shouted at because you two dont like eachother? Should i leave it in a safe place? Where should that place be? Will you say you haven’t received that parcel and it goes against my record because even with all the evidence in the world the customer is always right. If i take it back to the depot that could then be another 30+ minutes driving time that i may not be paid for plus fuel costs

Parcels are given a timeframe to be delivered in imagine it 2pm on a friday. The town is grid locked, the time your in traffic is eating away at that delivery time. If you drop the parcel off late it goes against you

All of these factors added together make it such a stressful job. Im not excusing bad delivery drivers because there are some but its also important to have some empathy too because its not as simple as dropping a parcel off to you

Often it might not be the drivers fault at all. There run might start at say 9 am but your parcels due at 9 am. Its a inpossible task for the driver to meet that window at often the routes are pre planned to be the most efficient so even if they diverted off that it could then make their whole route late for the sake of one parcel which has a bigger impact to them

No wonder your Rail Mail and Evri delivery drivers are so keen if you shave your bits and pamper and preen yourself, and lay back on the bed all ready for them - maybe you should let DHL, DPD, Yodel, etc know this!

There's a good chance your parcel didn't actually make it as far as the 'final mile', courier, which means the courier firm has had an issue getting it to the local depot.

I was a Hermes (now Evri) courier for 7 years & it's a very tough job. The only problems I had, were when parcels were mis-sorted to the wrong depot, lost, or damaged before reaching my collection depot.

Unfortunately, it's nearly always those who actually bring parcels to your door who bear the brunt of the anger.

The other problem is people wanting a ton of stuff delivered every day, but were never home but that's another story!!

I've found it's much less stressful to use local collection points instead. Way better for my equanimity.

I think it depends on what area you're in as to how good these courier firms are.

Yodel are appalling. Failed to deliver a parcel to me once, then later claimed that they had - and stopped communicating with me when I asked them to show me the signature that they would have had to have got on delivery. As they'd claimed to have delivered it, I couldn't claim back from the seller / retailer and so lost 40 quid.

Evri are rubbish too. Used to be OK when they were Hermes - up until when Covid hit, then they seemed to get overwhelmed with the volumes they were having to deal with.

They message you with a delivery window - then either message again to change it to later - or miss it completely. More recently they're messaging telling me it's coming mid afternoon, then the courier rocks up at lunchtime. And can you contact Evri about it?

No. Nowhere on their website is there any email address, cntact numbers or anything.

What if I'd planned my day around that delivery window and end up missing my delivery because I'm out?

DPD are by far the best around here. I just wih more of my suppliers would use them

All over

Everything has been covered from being a tough job to having issues with deliveries. For me the main issue is that despite leaving instructions what to do if not in, they sometimes just drop the item in front of your door not checking if you are in. What happens if you are away for a week? The other thing is the always bang the door as if there was no tomorrow instead of ringing bell that they can here is operational. And then they just dissappear before even you have time to go and open your door. Yes, not an easy job but really some shocking stuff too. As for customer services numbers is just a carousel and never able to speak to anyone. It's like anything else, service has gone out of the window in this country but then of course it's covid and the war that we blame it all on

I'm not blaming the individual couriers themselves - just the companies.

They're paid to provide a service. If they can't then that's on them. I'm self employed. If I'm stuck home waiting for a delivery that's been specifically booked for a day/time slot then I'm not earning. It's why I always book specific days for deliveries.

I couldn't give a toss if an Amazon parcel that's for personal use arrives at any time. Likewise clothes deliveries from online retailers.

But if you pay to have a guaranteed day and then, with no explanation, it's cancelled then WTAF? I've been in touch with the retailer and the parcel was collected from them at the scheduled time, easily ready to reach me today. They've chased DHL and all they've said is that 'the customer requested a change of delivery date'.

I didn't. The seller didn't. So it's complete bullshit.
