Venice has always had sewage issues and has even bigger sewage issues now than ever before. I lived there for 2 years from 1989 to 1991. Because of it's very nature and layout, sewage disposal has always been it's overriding problem. Keep in mind here that "flushing" always has to follow gravity Nearly all the buildings in Venice are actually underwater, the height of that water is dictaded by the tides. The ability to dispose of those "flushes" is dictated by the tides.
Yes, Italy has never taken any notice of EU law when it comes to anything (other than grants to Fiat), they don't take any notice of pollution directives either.
That said, on the whole, Venice does not smell too much at all in my opinion. |
