We enjoy some of the soaps and reality television , and it seems on another thread that we would be deemed unsuitable for voting on the eu referendum !
How do other fab forumites feel about this ?
A crazy notion at best in our opinion , elitist for sure and hopefully not the typical belief we hope  |

Personally I don't watch much TV. I can't stand the soaps or any of the celebrity based programmes. However Ju watches most of them.
She enjoys them and it doesn't interfere with anything, it's only light entertainment after all. |

That's what we thought , personally I am not that much into it , but my wife loves em !
Guess some feel that watching them makes you less worthy ?

Soaps are fine ( i dont personally like them much apart from pretenders which is hilarious lol )
As long as you take them for what they are which is just moving pictures on a screen then your fine lol !
As for reality shows, never liked them although i have been following CBB purely down to the silly americans causing trouble which i have found hilarious.
The undateables is a brilliant and very moving program 
Also on a side note does anyone else find that in all the soaps everyone seems to spend the majority of their time in the pub ?? And everyone seems to be able to either buy or give away drinks on the house regularly ?? |

There's a reason that about 99% of tv output is entertainment shows and 1% is current affairs.
Probably only 1% of the _iewing public watch current affairs. Therefore only a small percentage of the population actually know anything about what is going on outside their own lives, Albert Square or Coronation Street.
These are the people who will be easily led into voting the way they are told by whoever owns the channels they watch.
Would you be allowed to fly an airliner full of people because you saw 'come fly with me" once? No, of course you wouldn't. So why should people with no clue about what's happening in the real world be allowed to steer the course for 60 million others? Ignorance is the scariest problem we face at the moment. |

I used to watch a few soaps - Eastenders, Corrie. Just lost track of them and now have no interest.
Why anyone would look down on someone who enjoys them beats me.

So , you assume that because folk enjoy certain types of entertainment they are brainwashed and incapable of having their own opinion ?
That's a bit extreme to say the least .
I own and run three businesses , employing 42 people and despite the difficult times we have all endured , we are still moving foward .
Two are high street retail , and with major chains collapsing around us , I am guessing I must be doing something right , despite some of my leisure time being spent watching soaps and reality television.
Perhaps because I have a realistic perspective as to what the majority of people want , and an attitude that welcomes each and everyone as an equal .
So the notion that us gullible folk should not have a say is farcical to say the least  |

Having done 15yrs service for the country I feel I'm allowed to argue about this. There are a large number of people out there who are not equipped to make an informed choice in elections etc purely because they do not care and are ignorant of issues. For no other reason than "its boring" or "doesn't concern me". These people are not worthy of a democratic vote.
I don't believe I've said anywhere that people shouldn't be allowed to vote because they watch Eastenders. But more that they should be made to be more aware of issues from a variety of standpoints, to enable an informed choice to be made. Rather than "I'll vote NO to being in the EU because it's Great Britain innit!"
Watch what the fuck you like, I don't care. But read a paper or watch the news once a day at the very least. As I'm not looking forward to donning riot gear when people start looting supermarkets for food.

The only way we can get a sense of what is happening and the issues involved is though the media isn't it. It's a necessary evil as that's all we have. But it's far better to look at several different sources rather than one. That's when you start to get brainwashed and follow the story you're fed. That's what I mean by making an informed choice.

Kristallnacht happened in Germany in 1938 - it was touted, by the antisemitic German media at the time - as a 'spontaneous' protest against Jews. Thousands of Jewish properties and businesses were destroyed (hence the term Kristallnacht - meaning the Night of Broken Glass) and many were arrested and put in camps. The Jewish community were then made to pay for the damage. |

I've seen enough bad mouthing of other people on here the last few weeks to last me a lifetime. by people who see other as less worthy due to their colour or job or lack of one or social status or just because they're 'not like us' i strongly suspect that some of those would gladly see some of those rounded up at some point in the future. That was in the 12th century. Many of them were hiding in a tower to avoid being massacred. Lots jumped off the tower committing suicide rather than be killed. Some burned to death in fires they started. The rest were massacred.
This was a somewhat smaller Jewish community than what happened in Germany in 1938. |

Yes. The Yellow Star was first used in England where Jews were not allowed to do anything bar operate as moneylenders. Edward got into debt for his wars to them and rather than pay them back he ethnically cleansed England of Jews.
The only country in Europe to be recognized as having a long, good record with Jews (ie no pogroms, genocides, etc) is Scotland. The only bank in Europe to be established in the aftermath of the Medici banking failures that had Jews as one of the founding names was in Scotland (the Bank of Scotland). I could go on.
The rest are _iewed as what they are. Quick to hate 'the jews' and make comments that belong in the gutter about Jews. What saddens me as someone from such a heritage is that sickness has come into Scotland a little although much of it does reside in the issues re Palestine.
For the record I think Palestinians deserve a state. I'm not some starry eyed Zionist. Far from that.

I don't want people to be at "my" level of political engagement. "A" level would be a start.
Is it unreasonable to want the people who make decisions which effect everyones lives to have some level of interest IN the reasons for making that decision?
I don't think that's unreasonable, I think it should be mandatory that you take an interest. Even if your opinion is parroted from a party line, its still better than apathy.
Look at the police commissioner elections. A turn out of 13% nationally. That level of apathy and ignorance is truly stunning in a democracy.
The current and prospective governments are perfectly happy for the dumbing down of the media to continue. As a dumb populace is an easily led populace.

My Grandfather was German. He had a German/Jewish surname and left Breslau in 1933. he wouldn't have been overly concerned about any comments here.

I don't think that's unreasonable, I think it should be mandatory that you take an interest. Even if your opinion is parroted from a party line, its still better than apathy.
Look at the police commissioner elections. A turn out of 13% nationally. That level of apathy and ignorance is truly stunning in a democracy.
The current and prospective governments are perfectly happy for the dumbing down of the media to continue. As a dumb populace is an easily led populace.

What a load of rubbish, I don't watch soaps, cannot stand the load of dull uninteresting rubbish but it doesn't make me more suitable of voting in the EU referendum, its having an understanding of politics that do. I find politics difficult to understand and politicians are not truthful or honest to know who to vote for. So given that, I am out |

Is it fuck.
It's having a vote, caring about it and why you are using it rather than pissing it away just because some oxbridge idiot or media mogul is telling you the bad foreign men are making your life miserable. Because we've all seen where that thinking leads.
People who live in countries where there is only oppression die every day wanting what we have. Our armies have fought to stop fascism, communism and religious fundamentalism. How chuffed would they be to know that some people don't exercise their precious right to vote because politics is "boring". You don't have to be highly educated to understand the basics. That's bollocks. "If this happens, then the price of this will rise" is as simple as it can be, yet some people don't care as it's less interesting than who's turn it is to marry Kate Price this week.

the whole time i was reading that i could hear land of hope and glory in my head and could visualize two ty types taking tea on the lawns of cliveden. no one died for me so that i must vote. some may have died to give me freedom of choice to do so but that's not the same thing is it? |
