Never known them not to leave a site as tidy as they found it, always dump rubbish everywhere. Destroy sports field & local thefts increase.

Not discrimination but actual experience over many years.

My experience of living close to some Irish travellers is that they’re inconsiderate, terrible neighbours and generally unpleasant.

I also live near several travelling showmen families. They’re entirely different. No trouble, lovely and a world away from the others.

I have a friend who is a teacher in a rural part of Ireland..a number of her students are travellers. Whilst having sympathy for the discrimination that the kids face, she also couldn't deny the fact that they caused a lot of trouble and were a fucking nightmare to deal with.

Too much shouting? Poor you.

People are mixing up 3 different things.

1. GYPSY'S, tinkers etc, people that roamed doing seasonal agricultural work & making stuff to sell at the road side.

2. SHOWMAN etc, hard working decent but shrewd fair ground people.

3. TRAVELLERS, these let the above down, violent, dishonest & arrogant. Will cohesrse, bl@ckmail & bully at will, break into land & leave an absolute mess after vandalism to steal any copper/lead etc.

Chams or Socials

I spent many years moving them on through work. It costs councils a small fortune every year doing this. They know the system, how long they have in 1 place. The mess they leave behind is a disgrace. They often camp up on land next to my parents. They’ve used his fence as a washing line, their dogs have been vicious but he always takes them bin bags & asks them to use them. I’ve tried to be understanding & tolerant, sometimes you do come across some decent ones. But generally they wind me up.

We take people as we find them, regardless of background and beliefs! Good and bad in every community and wrong to generalise on a complete society of people. Let's face if you went to an area in the county that had a high proportion indian or black people and was unlucky enough to get mugged, you wouldn't then say that all indians or blacks was bad people! Or would you...

Be nice to hear from some gypsy/travellers on the forum, if there's any on here...

We have a site that the council made a permanent site years back so I guess I can't use the term " travellers " but they are Irish travellers and nobody goes anywhere near there ..

Usually a nicked car or two down the lane ..

They once stole a car from a mate of mine whilst we were in the pub and we walked to the site and predictably there it was being joyrided round the " camp " ..

They also stole my Mums moped !!

So let's say I don't have a high opinion of the ones round here

The bleeding heart niavity is very apparent, in any other walk of life I,d say take as you find but not with travellers.

These people choose to live as they do, I really cannot see any correlation with skin colour or area predominantly Black or Asian.

Even the Police are weary of them & won't enter a site alone.

I honestly hope you don't experience them as so many do but they'll be so pleased to meet you.

By the way I agree. I think generally they are possibly the the most demonised group in our society. It’s difficult because so many people share valid lived experiences but also having worked with and spoken to people from traveler communities it’s clear the way that stereotypes and generalisations have impacted them.

I think people with negative experiences are fair to be wary but not fair to apply their experiences to the entire group.

Have done some haulage jobs for them in the past and has lead to me getting to know a fair few quite well, even to the point where, if I need to, they let me park the truck on site over night and even let me use their facilities like shower and toilet. Even feel that safe I can leave my cab unlocked and nothing will get touched.

Its like anything, there's always going to be some that spoil it for the masses.

On the one hand there is no disputing that they are A: Substantially prone to criminality, B: Effectively beyond the law due to the difficulty in tracing them if they don't want to be found, and C: Besides the difficulties in B are treated with kid gloves by the authorities for... reasons.

However, all that having been said - We might be the only village on the regular Appleby route who gets them every single year, and never has any trouble from them whatsoever. At least if other people's reports of their passing through is to be believed.

Were it not for the fact they tend to cut down the long grass and s in the bits of verge they park on and then have a small bonfire to dispose of the waste we would barely even know they were there.

So I can't say too much negative about them from my personal experience

We really need to get a better auto-filter.

The random S in my post is... the word for unwanted plants...

When they've been in a group or campsite they've lived up to every stereotype. Dirty, thieving scum.

When a few came to the boxing club I had they were dead on.

They're another group that lefties tend to ignore the vile sexist, misogynistic behaviour though.

Some showed up to a gym in Stoke, got offered the free trial session, tried nick a load of focus pads and gloves after.

That's what I thought would happen if I'm honest but it didn't. They seemed genuinely decent people and behaved and did as they were asked.

The UK has the biggest, most complex, layered class system in the world. Travellers are near the bottom. Like the OP says a lot of them are good people some are bad, just like all the different classes. I’m more concerned about the people who occupy the top of the pyramid

"They are discriminated against. That's just fact."

Yes and they deserve to be because of the way they behave.

Worthing

The ones that turn up each year locally break into places to park up. They leave a mess behind which has to be cleared up. Good and bad in all. Shame as most are ok.

"What I think they do get discriminated against because of the reputation. But like all races their are good and bad"

The two sets of travellers that we had on our local playground/ junior football team pitch well and truly deserved the reputation. Driving cars on playing fields , feces and mountains of rubbish left on playground, several dog attacks etc. Increased burglaries in the area ( although can't prove this was them as no one was caught, the crime was constant and a marked increase whilst they were there, could just be local criminals taking advantage of the scapegoat)

The problem that you have is there is not many who encounter you who have had a positive experience. You are set apart from the rest of society because that's what you choose to do.

My personal experience of you traveller's have been negative. Like I said my recent job and a previous one was clearing up the mess you leave behind you.

Frankly I cannot even conceive of you ever genuinely being in this lifestyle, unless it is sto gain access or information to ones property, and I would not trust a traveller further than I can spit.

Where I used to hack out one of the fields we used was camped on. When they left the mess was indescribable.

You are disliked fir a reason. Pay the price for the life you want to lead.

In your job you are dealing with literal criminals, have you considered this may have influenced your views? In my job the traveller clients we had, despite appearing rough, were in fact more respectful and less entitled than many of our middle class clientele.

Well if you mean burnt out caravans dragged on a road outside a travellers site set alight and rubbish flytipped and my passing by my local green seeing your campsites when you leave and mounds of rubbish and the crime wave that hits while you are there.

Like some on here I always gave you the benefit of the doubt. Ut seeing your behavior first hand at work and when I used to ride and just recently a traveller camp I can assure you that I have yer to see a single positive action. You operate outside the rest of us behave how you want and terrorise wherever you go.

The day I see you leave a campsite in good order, you behave n the area you live in. And treat outsiders with decency I will change my view. Until then my stance bases on my first hand observation remains unchanged.

I would also question any traveller who was into this lifestyle. I cannot conceive of you doing it without ulterior motive. Travellers do not ever mix outside their communities

I call it as I see it

I’ve seen perfectly normal threads be removed for a few jokes that might be in bad taste but blatant discrimination like this is allowed. I’ll never understand the rules of the forums

"We take people as we find them, regardless of background and beliefs!

And best wishes and happy fabbing to them if there is! X

Then it's up to them to sort the bad behaviour in their community. Change the behaviour change the perception.
