in pubs you often see 'sharing platters'... is it ever possible to truly be sociable with food and share or are you a selfish eater and whats on your plate is yours   |

Depends where we are eating out, if it's our favourite Indian or Chinese restaurants then we order several dishes and just share and tuck in.
Same if we have a seafood platter at Beamers Fish restaurant at Brixham harbour, but if we are at most restaurants we just have our own dish. |

Just because it says 'will feed four' doesn't mean it's going to! Sodding 7 yr old nephew will learn this one day the cheeky little sod. If he can't drive to tesco and buy his own its hardly my fault is it!! |

This is a thing I like about other cultures the tables filled and people all share eating to them is a social thing.
Here in the uk most ppl have their own meals at their own place at the table or on their knees etc. Sharings more fun |

I'm a social eater. I love picky food, and love eating with my fingers.
When we go out for meals (friends and I) we generally go for things like tapas and mezze, where there is a load of little dishes and everyone just shares.
Even Indian and Chinese, we will order several dishes and put them in the middle and have a little bit of everything. |

I much prefer to share food than have a plate to myself.
It always seems to work out slightly more expensive, but if you like nibbling and chatting rather than head down tucking in then it is a better option imho. |

If I don't fancy anything else, and like the sharing platter, I would order that just for myself and not have a main course.
If there is a lot on the plate and I happen to like my dining companion(s) I may offer to share.

Slightly off tangent, but only slightly:
Don't you just hate it when the wife says "no thanks, i'm not hungry/thirsty" then when yours arrives she has to have "just a little bit of yours".
It makes my blood boil when she does that.
As can be seen i'm not into sharing food, except an indian. |

I will share if I order a sharing platter, but if It's my plate then nobody touches my food, at rugby once I got my pie and and chips and peas after the game and one of the lads tried to pinch a chip so I stabbed him with my folk and properly drew blood, I had to change my folk, in my defence I had warned him twice |

I tend to share, when in a relationship I will offer a taste of what's on my plate, often end up swapping meals because she prefers mine, this is now my young child's place, lol |

One of my pet hates was my sister, brother and sister in law used to allow their children to pick off their plates at BBQ's or family meals etc.
I did warn them if their children tried it with my plate they would get a fork in the hand.
My children were taught to sit with their own plateful of food and to eat it, they got up and walked away it was seen as them being finished their meal.
I can't be doing with this running around snatching a bite then off again.
Saying that if I were in a restaurant setting with others and they asked for a taste or to swap something I'd consider it.
I just don't like scavenging kids! |

At a Chinese, yes love to order lots of bits and pieces, actually prefer the starters to the main course
Have done the sharing platter and have been lucky that what I did like the person didn't, but was shared netween us.
And before somebody says it I do NOT share Paninis. |

I've actually done that. Lol. Was on a split shift in the pub and had 20 mins to eat between shifts. Ordered food and my male friend kept stealing my chips. Even though he'd ordered his own. 3 times I warned him to pack it in.
He took one more chip. He won't be doing it again in a hurry. (Only just drew blood but it was hilarious all his mates were rolled up laughing) xx |

Unless it's a sharing platter, in which case, it's as evenly distributed as possible. Tortillas and such like don't quite work out like that sadly...

The only time it bothers me is when your either cooking or ordering some food and you ask the people you may be with "do you want anything"? and they make it clear no they don't want anything.
Then when your tucking in those same people hover round your food like vultures that really PISSES ME OFF  |

Doesn't bother me to share food as long as it is understood that that is what is happening. Shared platters and tapas come to mind.
Someone who simply helps themselves from another person's plate without asking is just being rude. |
