How on earth is it that the helichopter paramedics and doctors service is a charity, not centrally funded?!
I know I’m biased because I love watching their programmes and I’m always in awe of what they do. All too often it’s literally a life saving service and the fact it’s a charity puts it (to my mind) as a ‘nice’ to have, not a ‘need’ to have.
I know all charities do amazing work for people in need.
Is there anything else that falls into this category? |

"The RNLI is a charity too.. as is the RSPCA and PDSA too."
Good point, I wonder if the coastguard are. Similar role but I think they’re centrally funded.
Get your point on the animal charities, but the reason I thought of this is because we have land ambulances.
The RSPCA don’t have a publicly funded equivalent. |

Lots of charities. In addition to those mentioned above, we have Macmillan Nurses (cancer) and Admiral Nurses (dementia) - charity funded. We have respite centres for children with disabilities - charity funded. Lots of research into treating and/or preventing disease and illness is charity funded. |

I know a kid who was air ambulanced after a crash.
It's disgusting they depend on charity.
We binged every series of the air ambulance things when we had COVID way back and we weren't allowed out. |

"Supplementary question - has anyone ever had the air ambulance deployed to them? No need to go into details unless you want to."
Yes. In Italy. Was seriously injured at mugello.
Thankfully didn't have to pay for it , sponsors did.
The daily cost of running a medical helicopter is roughly £10-15k per day. This is because it needs to be in immediate action to respond asap.
I have written to my mp to ask the question as to why the £5 million fund set up in 2015 has not increased in line with inflation.
And a further increase of lottery limit above the £10 million declared in the last audit |

No, they're government funded. And an excellent example of why many organisations don't want to be!
Why’s that, my lovely? "
Because the Govt hold the purse strings and get to decide the priorities. Like "send back the boats". Turns an emergency service into a political decision making tool. |

Thanks, KC! And for your earlier post - all valid stuff.

I had them arrive after I got crushed by a runaway car last year. It’s more my location in the countryside that a land ambulance was an hour away and they were concerned that I may have a crushed pelvis. I was laying in the floor looking up at the sky when I heard it coming. I wasn’t in a massive amount of pain as long as I stayed still and at that point I was so embarrassed about the fuss. Turns out lots of my tibia had been turned to mush |

Well they cost a shitload of money to run and you could have a lot of road ambulances for the cost of one air ambulance, although crewing them all would probably make them cost prohibitive too.
I spent 5 years as aircrew on a police helicopter and we used to do casevac for free under the police role of protection of life. We weren't as well equipped but could fly in worse conditions so got used quite a bit. Interesting and emotional work. |

Thanks, I’m doing as much as I can to get on with things. It’s still hurts most days but I’m basically as good as I’m going to get so I just have to live with it.
I’ve got a knee full of metal and have the prospect of early arthritis and a knee replacement in my future but I’ve finally started back at the gym this week so that’s good.
