Should the amount of personal wealth be capped for billionaires?

Who needs that amount of money? Cap them at 500 million and use the rest to fix hospitals, schools, poverty etc.177 billionaires live in the UK

177 x 500 million would be 88 billion to help fix the UK

Just thinking x

Nobody *needs* £1m, but if they worked hard in their respective fields, or had the foresight to exploit a legal and morally sound opportunity, more power to them.

It’s their money and they can do whatever they want with it.

It is a travesty none have given me a handout, but I’ve made my peace with that.

Could they consider building hospitals and prisons? Yes, of course. But remember - a lot of their wealth isn’t real money. It’s ‘worth’ not wealth.

And another thing! Just consider how much tax these people pay. Not necessarily always income tax, but in stamp duty when they buy houses, vat when they buy cars, planes, yachts, clothes, jewellery etc etc.

It’s unseen, but they are probably ploughing millions into the treasury through taxes.

I just don’t think it makes it ok for anyone to have that much money.

Pretty much every millionaire or billionaire is so as a result of exploitation of others.

If it's 'worth' not 'wealth' it isn't 'their money'. It's promises and hope.

And that's the weird world we're in. People can be unbelievably rich with money that doesn't exist on the basis that maybe in the future it might.

If you cap allowable wealth you also restrict entrepreneurship. Billionaires build businesses which in many cases provide a lot of employment amongst other things. Those employed by Billionaires then pay tax on their income, vat on purchases made and in turn provide employment to others.

The very nature of capitalism and the history of capitalism is quite literally that profit is made from exploitation? Historically too, how many western, particularly British families do we know are extremely wealthy off of the exploitation of people of colour and their labour? It’s an assessment I’ve made based on the fact that capitalism is, in its nature, explorative. A fair generalisation to make, no?

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

It's a complex question with no clear answer. If we admit to living in a free society, then people should be free to accumulate as much wealth as they can provided it is done so in a legal manner.

Does someone need 500 million to live well and comfortably? Absolutely not. Could / should that excess wealth be used for more altruistic means? Probably.

If a hard limit is imposed then you transition to a collectivist society akin to communism. Some societies might have more affinity for this system.

I don't think a top down imposition would work in western society.

Because you get dick swinging competitions over fucking Space while human beings still don't have clean drinking water. Granted, it's not their fault but it sure as hell is dystopian and that gap is only due to get wider as the select few try to hoarde the wealth and pull up the ladder that they already climbed.

Despite my socialist values, the concept is pants, for lots of reasons. However, a very big one would be how impossible it would be to implement…

Unless it were a global ban, billionaires would simply move themselves to tax havens, such as Monaco. Even if you’re only sitting on a few million that’s worth doing. Entry to the elite Monaco residency club starts from just £500,000…

Personally I'm more angry at Shell's profits in recent times.

They're too powerful to be challenged though as are many corporations now.

Governments aren't in a position to make big demands. Similarly if a government tried to place a tax/cap on extravagant wealth the financial system would probably collapse when it transpires the money isn't there.

"No, it shouldn't be capped, if someone's grafted Thier entire lives, made savvy buisness decisions, invested wisely and put a tell of a lot of work into something.... Why on earth should Thier wealth be capped?

Yeah! Fuck the poor! Fuck them again and again and again and again!

Being poor is a life choice

Don't condemn those who chose differently

We are now approaching Hell. Please make sure you take all your belongings with you. "

"Money envy is a very British thing...

How so?

It's less prominent in most other countries, where instead of envy they applaud success.

In this country it's almost seen as a crime to be successful and wealthy.

I think for some the crime is seen as the inequality that certain levels of wealth reflect and reproduce.

but I think most people in the UK love the notion of meritocracy actually"

I disagree. Brits love nothing more than a scandal or to bring someone down a peg or two

This is one of those subjects where both sides have what sound like great ideas as they explain them but turn out to have significant negative consequences when thought through. I do however believe that our laws should do more to protect the most vulnerable. So here's a list of my ideas that are no doubt wildly impractical.

You're not allowed any profit as a landlord if your properties don't meet certain standards. All profit on all properties for an entire financial year is permanently confiscated if an inspection shows a significant fault or a minor fault isn't rectified in a reasonable time, with the confiscated money used to pay independent insoectors.

No so our supermarket/food processor allowed to make more than 10% profit on any food item. If market value supports a higher retail price the profit must be passed to the producer.

Same 10% profit on all energy sales.

Same 10% on all public transport

Same 10% on all water utilities.

Above 10% cap to be calculated pre dividends and before the top 5% of wages are paid.

Those aside, if you manage to make billions selling cheap shit to people too lazy to walk to a shop then crack on. No one should be raking in cash on property, food, water or energy. Meanwhile, 10% on millions of pounds is plenty of incentive for running a water company or renting your property.

Many billionaires have committed to redistributing their wealth in their lifetimes. I’m thinking particularly of Bill Gates, who made a legitimate fortune through sound business knowledge and being in the right place at the right time. Not only has he convinced many of his kind to do the same, his foundation is heavily involved in eradicating disease in the world.

I note an earlier comment about Elon Musk and his funding of space research. I’ve no idea where he stands on charitable endeavours, but he is employing thousands across all his business enterprises.

Ad an example, the Indian government funds a large space research sector, yet has starvation and children living on the streets homeless.

Not all billionaires are bastards, not all governments are saints.

It would take a thousand years to spend £1 billion at £1 million a year.

Most people will earn around £ 1 million in their working lives and yet still manage to live a happy and content existence.

Given the average lifespan is around 80 years, then the simple maths shows that even if someone was to spend (note spend, not earn) £1 million a year each year of their lives then they'd die with £920 million left to spend.

That statistic alone makes me depressed. Nobody needs that level of wealth. If you can't exist on £1 million a year then you need to give your head a serious wobble.

"

The issue with that is in your use of the word "earned"

There are of course a wide range of views on its meaning but I'm sure most would agree that a shop worker doesn't "earn" a wage of millions a year, a person who re- mortgages their house to start a thriving business on the other hand most would agree has the right to say they've earned a far higher income. The issue is when people believe that any individual can possibly have some special talent or ability that earns them vast sums of money. Let's say I get lucky and someone gifts me a large unprofitable steel works. Through hard work, clever ideas and and at personal financial risk 'I' turn the business around and it starts making millions a year. Is it fair that I continue to pay my workers the same whilst paying myself millions in the belief that all the profit is created by me or do I recognise that part of the turnaround has come about due to staff cut backs meaning the staff I have now work harder and share some of the profits with them? Do I recognise the fact that investing in new tech has made the process cheaper and Thetford sell my product for less or do I have quiet little chats with the bosses of other steel suppliers and agree to keep the price high and pocket the money thus making millions off the brains of cleverengineers that actually "earned" my profits?

The reality is it is impossible to earn billions. Anyone getting this money is employing thousands and thousands of people who are all working hard to generate that profit yet somehow we convince each other that the person at the top is the only one actually earning it, the rest are just doing their jobs. This is why we need laws. Capitalism has massive benefits - it has arguably been the single biggest driver in the improvement of living standards in human history but it needs boundaries. Without these we go back to a world of haves and have not with unscrupulous people able to exploit and abuse others.

You will find most very successful people give away most of those wealth as money doesn’t interest them , bill gates etc.

Basically these people object to governments telling them what to do especially when they usually know how to solve the worlds problems better than the governments.

Hospitals and schools can’t be fixed with money , it’s the people that use them need fixing

We either accept we live in a Capitlist society or not. With all it flaws and benefits or we change it.

The problem is our current system isn't truly capitalist. Its Socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor.

I'm a firm believer of what you earn you should keep but definitely shouldn't be taxing anyone under the 30 grand bracket for a start. 150 odd for tax and 100 odd for NI which is a fucking farce because I need 3 phones to get a fucking appointment

I'm kinda ok with billionaires...it's not all money sitting in a bank account it's holdings in companies etc.

But what I do object to is wealth not being taxed at the same rate as income and the tax loopholes afforded to the very richest.

Just read a news story that the water companies have apologised for the amount of raw sewage they've been pumping into rivers and the sea for years and promised to sort it out but it will mean a rise in bills. For the last decade the companies in England have paid an average of £2 billion per year to share holders. Those of you saying that we shouldn't tax money from people's wise investments, so you believe this is fair? Do you honestly believe we should be allowing people to amass large amounts of private wealth by investing in companies that we all know have been failing to do their job and making people very ill? Do you believe that having amassed this wealth they shouldn't have it taxed and instead each and everyone of us should have to pay to to replace it so the companies can do what they should have already done?

Seriously how would that even work or make sense?

We can't even get international companies to pay the correct tax, let alone dictate someone's wealth.

All you would do is scare off any wealth to other countries- hence no businesses or tax or economy.

Most wealthy individuals donate alot to charity.

"Should the amount of personal wealth be capped for billionaires?

Who needs that amount of money? Cap them at 500 million and use the rest to fix hospitals, schools, poverty etc.177 billionaires live in the UK

177 x 500 million would be 88 billion to help fix the UK

Just thinking x"

All they would do is leave the country and take their money with them.

The world is extremely strange. Why have a Euro lottery With 180 million jackpot when I'm sure 180 people would be very happy with 1 million pounds each or even 1800 people with 100,000. What I could do with £ 100K. Why does it have to be a such a ridiculous amount of money that when most people win it say it didn't make them happy.

The fact is a lot of wealthy people already take their wealth and hoard it overseas in tax havens. But still have fixed asset cash cows in this country that they can't move or would become worthless if moved.

gretna

I think you should be allowed to earn whatever you earn - what you shouldn’t be allowed to do is avoid paying the tax you are due to pay by exploiting loopholes in the taxation system and sending funds offshore and all the other ducks and dives some of them employ. Pay your fucking taxes - you’ve got it play your part in society like someone with a conscience. If everyone paid the tax they are due we would be a-lot better off - maybe change the system to tax people before they get a chance to pump it into every scheme available. I don’t know how - im not an expert. Someone will though!

You don't get to keep all of what you win as it's taxed, I wouldn't be happy about that either

If you cap it at 2 billion, then they will stop caring about making anymore money. So you won't have any more money to take once you took away the money of current billionaires.

The live in a different world, if any laws are brought in that would change their financial circumstances they would take all of their money out of which ever Country they had it in , they are not in the business of making it so other people can take it away for nothing.

True, you've already paid tax as part of your stake money.
