Covers of a song that raise it to the next level

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Looking for covers of songs that were reimagined to raise the song to the next level, not just "updated". Prefer ones that did not get major airtime on the radio.

eg:

You Are My Sunshine - The Dead South

Brothers in Arms - Home Free

House of the Rising Sun - Geoff Castellucci

Hurt - Johnny Cash

It's a tough one this, because I think the mark of a great song is how well it can be covered. Most songs aren't necessarily improved upon though.

This has inspired me to just put on,

• Brian Ferry - A Hard Rains A-Gonna fall.

I actually collect Dylan covers. Relatively few of them are better though. This one is sexier for sure..

• Maria Muldaur - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere

A lot of the covers mentioned are a pale imitation of the original at best , let alone ‘taking it to another level’.

Some are legendary in their own right but not many.

For my two penneth I’ll throw in Janice Joplins rendition of Me and Bobby McGee, that really is on another level to Roger Miller’s original version of the Kriss Kristoferson song.
