Looking for covers of songs that were reimagined to raise the song to the next level, not just "updated". Prefer ones that did not get major airtime on the radio.
eg:
You Are My Sunshine - The Dead South
Brothers in Arms - Home Free
House of the Rising Sun - Geoff Castellucci
Hurt - Johnny Cash

It's a tough one this, because I think the mark of a great song is how well it can be covered. Most songs aren't necessarily improved upon though.
This has inspired me to just put on,
• Brian Ferry - A Hard Rains A-Gonna fall.
I actually collect Dylan covers. Relatively few of them are better though. This one is sexier for sure..
• Maria Muldaur - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere

"Billie Jean but Chris Cornell version"
Not bad. Try Obadiah Parker's cover it is oozy gooey squishy buttery! His cover of The Way You Make Feel is like that too. |

Aparently after hearing Johnny Cashes version of Hurt, Trent Reznor said the song was no longer his. |

A lot of the covers mentioned are a pale imitation of the original at best , let alone ‘taking it to another level’.
Some are legendary in their own right but not many.
For my two penneth I’ll throw in Janice Joplins rendition of Me and Bobby McGee, that really is on another level to Roger Miller’s original version of the Kriss Kristoferson song. |

Ananda Shankar - Jumping Jack Flash (amazing version)
Merry Clayton - Gimme Shelter (she was the backing singer on the original and tears the roof off it)
Esther Phillips - Home is Where The Hatred Is (I love Gil Scott-Heron, but her version is better. In fact, it’s utterly wonderful)
John Coltrane - My Favourite Things (a ditty from a musical transformed into cosmic space-jazz)

Can't believe disturbed gets a mention on here, the original is so much better.
The standard answer is joe cocker, with a little help from my friends and I'll add Billy Bragg when will I see you again.
*edited cuz I got the wrong song * |

Nickel backs cover of "sharp dressed man" by zz top! It's very good!
They get a lot of hate usually, but even the comments sections on Youtube is 80% positive. |

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but a cover that just blew my mind was one of Queen’s We Will Rock You rearranged by Max Raabe |

"Creedance Clearwater- heard it through the grapevine "
Fogerty is an artistic genius with his own music, but sorry the DAAS cover is an order of magnitude above. Paul McDermott's voice just takes it so far beyond anything else.
https://youtu.be/u-BGlQ1U6ek - song starts at 5:10 but watch the comedy skit at before it for a bonus track |
