You're generally advised to wear nothing between yourself and a chamoix to prevent chaffing.

"Commando or underwear under your lycra"

Wearing underwear beneath cycling shorts really defeats the point, the pads are designed to provide a surfact that won't rub or chaff and the "lycra" is constructed in a way that wicks away sweat.

Better to wear something over the top instead.

I never wear underwear under my cycling shorts as it causes too much sweating and potential saddle sores.

how does one deal with the spotty botty when that happens? I sometimes get them, specially through the summer months.

E45 or steroid cream if it's really bad

Chamoix creme. Anti bacterial.

And wash the thing.

The general defence against saddle sores, is chamoix creme. It provides an antibacterial, anti-chaffing, moisturising barrier between your skin and your shorts... it also comes with sex names like Butt Balm, Bum Butter, and Squirrel's Nut Butter. Many top professional riders use these cremes, especially on longer rides.

I also found that bib-shorts are better than normal shorts, because the "bib" bit keeps them in place... reduced movement means less rubbing & the pad sits where it should.

Also, not every brand of shorts is the same and some brands fit different people better than others.

Thanks for the top tip

Nothing under the lycia, but ever since a mini full of young ladies pulled up next to me at some lights and stared, I have worn baggy shorts over them.

Happy bottom bum butter is my go to, bonus points for the tagine, tested on arseholes not animals

Seriously though as someone who has done 2 ultra endurance races now, chamois cream and good shorts with no pants will change your riding and are in my eyes the best investment you can make (see also saddle fitting)

Defo Commando and if needed a cream..... decent shorts (you don't have to spend massive) and a saddle fit help too if you are uncomfortable

I wear regular clothes on my bike. It's an e-bike with an illegal throttle and I enjoy some of the grumpier responses from the Lycra lads while on the roads.

It defeats the object of the pad if you wear underwear. The idea is not to be sat on seams

Has to be commando. I'd hate to think of the damage caused by the friction of underpants plus the double trouble of finding the little lad when stopping to pee.

I used to wear briefs under my shorts. Was advised against it. A generous helping E45 cream, no underwear. A great combination. Definitely glad I ditched the briefs.

Even us mountain bike riders wear chamois under our shorts or trousers. We spend nowhere as much time in the saddle but still, I don’t want any chaffing at Any time!

Commando and bib shorts. I take a little pot of cream to keep chafing at bay and a couple of flushable wipes in a plastic bag to clean up after a toilet visit on longer rides.

Commando + lube.

And, yes, once I tore the arse out of one pair of bibs with the nose of my seat. Nobody mentioned it.

Aka an electric moped only without the range.

I get wanting to derestrict it, but not even pedalling is just taking the piss.

Always commando and use chamois cream on even short rides...

I also make sure that I never use fabric conditioner when washing my shorts as the wax in it affects the wicking ability/absorbency of the chamois...
