Anyone know if you can scrap a car just before your car tax runs out? and not get fined? My car's on it's last legs and won't get through the MOT in a month's time, and i thinking about Scrapping at the end of this month to avoid having to renew the car tax that runs out end of this month, but not sure what the rules are on car tax. |

Scrap it and send the tax dixc back to dvla...you may get a refund for any time left on it.
,,,the dvla website may be more apt to seek the answer from than a swinging site though! |

When I scrapped my car, I think I did a SORN to declare it as off road then when it was taken in by the scrap yard, they sent the yellow bit (I think) from the log book off to declare it had been scrapped. My tax was nearly due to run out too and I was in the same position as you.

Isn't it for every complete month you have left on the tax disc? It was such a long time ago I did mine!
But looking at the DVLA or yougov website is probably a much better suggestion! |

on the log book there will be a section for passing it on to a scrap yard as well as a SORN, make sure both are completed and sent to DVLA or you may end up with a fine |

if you scrap a.car still with mot n tax there is no problem just phone up scrappie to come get it....most will buy the car off you....if tou still have a month or more on your tax dics you can take it off the car send it back to dvla for a refund of what times left on it ...if you wait until tax has run out you run risk of getting fined if car is seen on a public road |

Yeah scrap it any time you choose, so long as you fill out the reg doc to say that it's been permanently scrapped or broken up.
If you have more than a full month tax left, send it back to DVLA and they will refund the money - note they will only refund unexpired months and the disc has to be posted before the start of the month or you lose the entire month - bastards |

As above, if you are scrapping it at the end of the month anyway and the tax is out at the same time, just get the tatyard to collect it. Make sure the V5 is filled in and post it off. The yard should also give you a certificate of destruction but some don't. If you have any worries about the tax just sorn it on line when you stop using it but keep it on your drive, then get the scrappie to collect it. They can't pay you cash for scrap cars now, you will get a cheque or bank transfer. |

Good scrap yards will help you with the paperwork. Give your chosen yard a ring first. |

I scrapped my sons old golf when he went to Australia last July and I got cash from my local yard. Had to take proof of ownership and two forms of ID. You fill the V5C form for scrapping it. It's just like selling it on. You will get a confirmation from the DVLA in about a week. |
