Excuse the randomness. Has anyone ever had to decalre themselves homeless? I've been sofa surfing for months and dont seem to be getting the help I should be getting legally from the local council. I'm at my wits end and stressing out. Been staying with a friend for a few weeks but I cant stay here. I was suppsed to leave a few days ago so on borrowed time. Of course the council I have to deal with is Islington who are crap anyway. Just got off the phone with Shelter who told me what I already knew. This year has been shit so far and seems to getting worse. Anyone else around London in the same situation or been in this shit show?

Yes, I had to declare myself and my 2 kids homeless. I was in rented accommodation and owner was selling the property. This was 22yrs ago.

The LA couldn't do anything until the day I moved out of the property. Due to having kids I was a priority.

Not 100% on your situation but you might be low priority for the LA. You can apply for social housing, with housing associations.

Maybe easier to rent privately.

Weeks ? U not too bad . I sleeped in my van nearly a whole year . Think council helps a working single dad ?

U can be a blind single mother with no legs living with 5 kids in same room they not helping .

I been homeless many times since lockdown 1

And I’m at risk become homeless again .

And no x no one is gonna help u x

U know what they say ?

U not even have issues , just fuck off . They not even bother

So , ruin your life in shit smack heroin n alcohol then they will help u

Shelters :

Are you working ?

Yes .

Well we charge a lot if u r working

U better get a private

So … don’t work n they help u

Just stop working n smoke shit loads of gear

There . Sorted

Is absolute joke .

At list u have a sofa surf . I had one the whole lockdown 1

So u feel lucky.

London

Put in a homelessness application with Islington council - they should provide you with a PHP (a personalised housing plan) setting out advice for resolving your situation. Unless you have specific medical needs you will likely be found “not priority” so won’t be provided with council accommodation directly but they should be providing you lists of agencies and/or organisations to help you find accommodation in private sector affordable whilst on universal credit. In Islington, there is The Margins Project at the Union Chapel that could provide some support and advice. They have a drop in on Monday and Wednesday 11am-2pm.

Theirs some truth to what you say their because in Torquay they home alcoholics and dr#ug users to keep them off the streets but they come out everyday looking for money to buy alcohol and dr#ugs

Yes. I left a violent husband with a young child in tow and had to declare myself homeless. The fact that I had a house with him I was told I can't be homeless . Got into a lot of debt starting again. Hopefully things are better these days for woman fleeing violence

Already on UC. Shelter just give advise, they dont actually help you.

Have you thought of applying for jobs with live in positions OP?

When I live in London I knew a few people left homeless through relationship break ups who struggled to find accommodation and one route that proved successful was 'live-in' employment in pubs, holiday parks and agricultural businesses.

It may mean moving but would provide a roof and income.

Good luck.

Yes ive had to declare being homeless with 2 children.

Ex's criminal damage got us evicted for it as landlord didnt want us there anymore.

Got no help until the day we was evicted all they offered us was a hostel that came with other issues as well.

Im going to have to ask is there anything keeping you where you are or would you consider a different area.

even if its outside of london.

I have someone staying at mine at the moment because, while they have a flat, there's a problem with sewage that's turned the place into a health hazard and thus effectively rendering them homeless.

Their landlord (a housing association) isn't getting the work done, or keeps trying and failing, and meanwhile their (already fragile) mental health is declining as a result of the situation.

It's been a nightmare for them trying to find alternative accommodation (while on disability benefits), and difficult for me as I'm tired of sharing my small space.

It's 2023 and this shouldn't be happening.
