snow day rules and facebook?

someone i work with left work this morning due to the snow (as did i) saying that she was worried about driving in it etc.
she posts on fb that she got home safe and sound (phew!) then 3 hours later posts that she has managed to get to tescos and back (which is near where we work and she would have had to drive there!)
now....if i was her manager i think i'd be asking questions on monday, wouldnt you?? |

I remember someone off long term with a sore back posting a video of herself pissed and cartwheeling down a hill at a music festival. I invited her in to chat this thro..
she was advised by the union to leave.

we cant work from home. not TOIL and not sure if she is making up time etc.
i always worry about leaving early at tims like this because i dont want to seem like a woos but it did take me an hour to do a 20 min journey home by the time i left and i havent driven anywhere since i got home |

If you can't work from home and there was no option to remain at work then how she spends the time is up to her. It's just not very wise to post it on Facebook. That's the sort of thing that makes me think twice when I consider people for special projects or promotions. Is she facing redundancy too?
I let my staff leave at 3pm today but I have asked them to make the time up next week. I would rather they got home in good time and have happy staff next week. If any of them doesn't make up the time then I will be having words. |

It is at a company's discretion to allow their staff to leave early due to adverse weather conditions but it does not give the company the right to tell their staff how to spend the unplanned free time that has been given. Once you leave your place of employ and are on your own time you can go wherever you want without having to check in with the boss first to see if it's ok. |

but she requested to go home because she didnt want to drive in the snow....if she was ok to drive hours later then she could have stayed at work surely? |

Yes, she probably should have. I wouldn't be pleased if I were her colleague or her manager if others remained at work. |

The boss could have refused her request. He/she didn't. Those are the facts and once out of the building she's free to do as she pleases. My guess is the next time she asks they won't be so accommodating. She's probably had her card well and truly marked too. |

That's my opinion too. If she asked to go home and your office stayed open then yes your manager should be asking them some questions on Monday. Totally different scenario if your company was telling people they could leave.

People seem so desparate to tell everyone else what they're doing on a minute to minute basis on fb that they don't actually give a thought to anysort of comeback where work is involved
Ive had managers print pages from there to show to employees when they've been off sick but have status's up about having a great lunch at the pub with mates
Its just so stupid,who really cares about anyone going to sodding tescos anyway |

Actually today made me realise how great the EU freedom of movement really is.....
The snow we had down here in South Devon was washed away by Nine O'clock, but two of my local girls decided it was too dangerous to drive the Five or Six miles into work today....whereas one of my Eastern European workers drove 60 miles through heavy snow from North Devon to get to work, and couldn't apologise enough for being Forty minutes late.
Bloody foreigners eh?

honestly, I think people lose their mind on there.
the girl I described above started a thread after she left slagging off the company, previous employees joined the slagging off.
then current employees joined in... they all got disciplined.

The way I see it is if she requested to go because she didn't want to be driving in it, then she is in the wrong.
If the company decided to send her home , then she is free to do whatever she likes. |

Me neither. And there are no employment details either. And maximum security settings. I never post about work, I have signed a statement confirming that I agree to abide to the restrictions of the official secret act, yet I know of people that have been sacked due to facebook statuses. Considering that you need to be pretty intelligent to do my job it does amaze me just how stupid some people can be.
