Oral sex causes throat cancer epidemic
Jump to: Newest in thread
Dr. Hisham Mehanna, from the University of Birmingham, says that 70 per cent of throat cancer cases are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) - a normally harmless virus that is spread sexually and has been linked to a multitude of cancers.
Dr. Mehanna explained that people who have multiple oral sex partners have up to a nine-fold increased risk of suffering throat cancer.
He wrote in The Conversation: "Over the past two decades, there has been a rapid increase in throat cancer in the West, to the extent that some have called it an epidemic.
"This has been due to a large rise in a specific type of throat cancer called oropharyngeal cancer."
Dr. Mehanna continued: "HPV is sexually transmitted. For oropharyngeal cancer, the main risk factor is the number of lifetime sexual partners, especially oral sex.
Those with six or more lifetime oral sex partners are 8.5 times more likely to develop oropharyngeal cancer than those who do not practice oral sex."
Hard to swallow.... |

We all have cancer and for one in 2 of the unlucky ones, it will trigger somewhere in the body. Just enjoy life and worry about it only if you ever have too |

"That number should come down as more people have the HPV Vaccination."
Well, the younger generation anyways. It's been researched that it can still be effective for people up until the age of 45. However, it will only be given free to bi men who ask for it. Women if they want to have the vaccine have to pay for it |

Which is ironic as they also and correctly push for women to have smears... To test for hpv |

Also :
You can be infected with HPV WITHOUT being sexually active – as HPV spreads easily through skin-to-skin contact, it is possible to be infected with HPV without having sex. Prolonged contact with infected skin , I.e Warts as an example can/ may cause transmission of the virus. |

It's tricky to collect enough cells from the penis, but smears are able to collect enough to test |

"I'm vaccinated
Oh how did you get it? Isn't there a ridiculous number of strains? "
I lived in Australia when the first one came out, and there was a limited top up program for women up to 28 - I was in my early 20s at the time.
I don't know if the one I got is as good as the one that exists now, but I know it protects against at least most of the oncogenic strains of HPV.
(Funnily enough, around the time I was getting my last shot, I was preparing to move to the UK, and the university warned international students that measles outbreaks were happening. So I got some extra childhood vaccines in the same arm on the same day. Thanks, antivaxxers ) |

Hmm, vaginal asphyxiation due to a loss of grip strength on a multy flap pinback tang lapping session is possibly a bit post-watershed for Horrible Histories. I'm thinking atleast a PG12 rating at least |

I believe anyone under 25 should have been offered the vaccine. Any anyone classed in a high risk category can also be offered one. Hopefully anyone will be able to access the vaccine sooner rather than later.
However so many things cause cancer you still have to live |

Ok so I've just checked...
Almost 200 strains,
9 are associated with cancer,
HPV16 is implicated in 70% of throat cancer cases.
I can rest easy I've not quoted incorrect facts now

Of course, you do what you wish. But it's a fact that many strains of HPV can cause cancer. The same as with many viruses (e.g. Epstein-Barr virus; Hep B & Hep C viruses, etc.) If we can prevent at least some of these infections, we're reducing morbidity and mortality associated with various cancers. That's a good thing. |

I'm not sure that's quite how it works? You'll have probably received your BCG jab at school based on your age? They no longer do that as TB whilst not eradicated is really low in the UK now. Whilst the HPV vaccine is currently administer to kids as it is clearly still an issue... If you think the government will spend billions on vaccines they don't think they genuinely need to? I think you'd be very mistaken |

The major causes of head and neck cancers are smoking and drinking alcohol. UV rays can cause lip cancer, whilst working in the construction, textile, ceramic, logging, and food processing industries can cause people to be exposed to substances like wood dust, formaldehyde, asbestos, nickel, and other carcinogenic chemicals.
So before you give up giving BJ's to save your life make sure other, equally or more likely causes, are eliminated as well. Enjoy Life! |

It was far less common/widespread as a sexual activity, yes. A bit like anal was pretty unusual/taboo until recently. Now it seems pretty mainstream. |
