most of us know the petrol companies are ripping us off in lots of towns and cities as are the super makets that claim how much they are helping us all ! but the national lottery increase to £2 a 100% increase is surely just feeding off the desperation of the increased numbers doing the lottery ! |

if you were about to get your house repposesed because you work in the construction idustry and your income has fallen back to what it was 25yrs ago you might give the loaf of bread a miss ! the fact is more people are doing the lottery again and suddenly it needs to go up ! |

guess the guy in haverhill who had a failing business that won a 148 million thought it was worth a punt ! as for inflation the inland revenue seem to think that after 20 plus years of allowing the self employed to claim 40p a mile back from when diesel was less than 60p a litre to putting it up to 45p last april when it has risen to about £1.40 a litre is keeping up with inflation ! just another rip off making companies less profitable costing jobs and taking money out of the economy |

If I was in that situation I would be sat at CAB trying to get it sorted (as I did when I WAS in that situation), not buying a Lotto ticket with odds against me winning the top prize of 14 million to one.
The lottery jackpot may well clear all debts but you've got to win the thing first. If more people were realistic about their income vs their expenditure they might not be in the mess they got into. |

I think you will find that many companies would argue that the retail industry IS NOT dead.
Life is all about survival of the fittest, retail companies that are changing the way they trade in line with modern trends are surviving. |

so you think that self employed people and shop owners should have somehow known that in 2012 their income would be less than it was in 1992whilst the running cost energy bill, fuel bills and business rates soar

No, it's far from dead. But it IS getting one hell of a wake up call and unsustainable business models are being exposed at an alarming rate, I'll grant you. But this happens cyclically every generation or so. Retail has changed in our lifetimes, just as it changed in our parents and Grandparents. It will continue to change long after we're gone. The thing you can say about Retail is that is the one sector of the economy which changes with public demand constantly.

and many of them are returning to ood old blighty as soon as the economy in theor adopted country goes down the pan. I watched a programme the other week where brits were struggling abroad, one man in America was in thousands of dollars of debt, he was being chased by a health insurance company because he owed them $15,000 after his son had to have his appendix house. they were not entitled to any help as they were not americans and they were longing to go home. |

I run my own business, the second business I have built from scratch, I make provision for leaner times because I have seen so many people get carried away at making a few bob in their small business and living beyond their means.
If the business/trade you are in is in the doldrums then move to something that is less likely to be effected by this recession.

Rubbish you dont need a lot of money to make money.
In 1995 I bought a garage from the council for £300 and rented it out for £10 pw under a six month lease paid up front, with this revenue I bought the garage next to it and in 8 months I had bought all 11!
I then moved into property and now have a portfolio of over a hundred props and over 50 commercial units all of which I rent out!
Most people who rent a house out get a return of 4% I get a return of 10 to 12 as a lot are modified to the disabled or have a learning disability, and rented to my local council under a ten yr guaranteed tenancy this is because councils do not have the housing stock to house these people.
They are spending 10s of thousands housing these people in nursing homes and its cheaper to rent an adapted property.
Money can easy be made if you are capable of spotting a opportunity and have a little luck. |

never been carried away . have seen many do that to ! my business is 32 yrs old and survived 2 previous recessions and a divorce where i got my pants taken down due to the system in this country throwing legal aid at people who don't deserve it putting people above that bracket in a no win situation . i have worked hard all my life and at the moment travel into london every day costing £150 a week in diesel for shit money out of the house at 6.00am grafting all day and back home after 6.00pm the main contractors continue to get good prices but rip off sub contractors and get them into price wars .wonders what job to easily find with better pay after 34 years of doing the one i love . the dole perhaps like so many others ! |

Well seeing as the UK was in a deep recession in 92, yes.
Any business case has to take into account inflation, NMW rises, NI rises, tax rises etc. It is shit at the mo, much worse than it was in the 90s, but we lived through that one and we'll live through this one.
But thinking that relying on winning the lottery is a sound fiscal policy is avoiding the issue completely. |

Any business case has to take into account inflation, NMW rises, NI rises, tax rises etc. It is shit at the mo, much worse than it was in the 90s, but we lived through that one and we'll live through this one.

the thread started as a comment that i think raising it to £2 is a rip off and feeding off of desperate people . my odds are crap really ! i worked with a guy who got the 1 million raffle another one £65,000 and my second cousin £25,000.mates son got £5,000 on a scratch card and i live in the town where the £148,000000 was one !! still can just about find a quid though as even a thousand would be handy right now . |

Bascially, you're a dreamer and not a do-er.
My advice would be to stop playing the lotto and in 12 months time you'll have £104 to spend (assuming you play once per week). You'll also find you'll have a clear sense of where you want to be and how to get there as your head won't be continually full of ideas of how you'll spend your lotto millions. |
