Recycling- lingerie /bras /sports bra

Have a super random one for a bank holiday..

I’m having a massive clear out. I’ve sorted clothes and shoes that can go to charity shops, and some that can go in textile recycling.

Now I’m a bit flummoxed by underwear, I’ve got a tonne of bras, sports bras and even fancy lingerie that I just don’t wear anymore. I’m assuming charity shops won’t take them? I’ve had a google and the internet suggests participating M&S stores ( mine doesn’t) or Bravissimo ( none near me) or loads of places in USA or Scotland. Any suggestions? They are in good condition and it seems a waste to send them to textile recycling.

Charity shops take bras in good condition and other lingerie just not knickers.

I donated a load earlier this year and got a big surprise to see most of it used in a Valentine's day display

Do charities like women’s shelters take used bras or is that just weird?

Oh really? That’s really cool!!

I nosed in the shop down the road but they didn’t have any so I just made the assumption that it wasn’t the done thing!

Oxfam used to collect bras centrally then send them off en masse to other countries.

Breast clinics in hospitals sometimes do bra collections.

Textile recycling is where they shred clothes not fit for wearing anymore, these are all in good condition and could get a second life with someone

I don’t know what they do but you need a store that participates in the program mine doesn’t.

Last time I went in Dunelm there was a bin for bra recycling near the toilets. There is a community café that also accepts bras for recycling. I know a lady who had to use a women's refuge many years ago, she said clean underwear including knickers were always welcome. She said she walked out with a child in each hand, a purse with £3 and the clothes on her back. Many people donate clothes, but they often had to handwash their underwear in the sink to wear the next day.

I'd go for charity shop if I were you. Mine was very nice stuff as I'm sure yours is and they were very happy to accept it.

That is if you have clothes banks near you, mine are just textile recycling and I would rather something got used if possible, rather than just shredded.

Smalls for all are a charity that send them to Africa. You can just send them by post.

Loads of places have them:

Fire stations

Library

Petrol stations

Supermarket car parks

Mini ones inside chemists, clothes shops

Hospitals

Doctors surgeries sometimes have mini ones in reception.

Loads of places have clothes banks you just need to keep your eyes open for them.

Google clothes banks online and you can put your postcode in and it will show you all of the ones near you.
