The gents would be expected to wear a shirt with a collar, with or without a jacket. A tie may also be worn. Not a suit, as it would be too formal.
The ladies would be expected to wear something floating, glittery, like a nice top with a skirt or trousers.
All IMHO, of course.
I tend to wear a floaty and colourful top, with tailored trousers and a pair of heels, jazzed up with some mid-range blings.

You're missing the point.
By buying into the 'smart casual' or 'black tie' nonsense, you're allowing someone else to limit your choices. |

For me smart casual would be nice pair of jeans with a nice top, coat rather than jacket, hair and make up done and heels. Small amount of jewellery so your smart n sexy but not dressed like you're going to a night club (if that makes sense) |

Where you're going doesn't actually matter. You've been told 'smart casual'.
Smart casual is smart casual wherever you're going. |

Surely you know! I can't believe you jump from a smart dress or suit to sweatpants and a t shirt with nothing inbetween. |

I think her friend is being helpful rather than restrictive (if that's a,word lol). She would look a right tit if they were going to the zoo and she turned up in a ball gown, or if she was being taken out to a fancy restaurant and she turned up in jeans and a hoodie.
Certain social scenarios fit certain types of clothing. Being advised of a suitable dress code is just being nice. He hasn't said wear smart casual or you are not going, just advised that that dress code is most appropriate. |

Where you're going doesn't actually matter. You've been told 'smart casual'.
Smart casual is smart casual wherever you're going.

Onny isn't saying that the friend is bring limiting but that the whole idea that there are rules as to what you should wear on certain occasions is limiting. It is certainly true that many of us would feel daft I'm a ball gown at the zoo but that is only because these rules tell us that we shouldn't dress like that on these occasions. How many kids do you see wandering round supermarkets dressed as superman they don't know the rules and everyone thinks it's ok now put a grown man in a superman outfit and everyone thinks he's crazy. Silly rules that limit us all. |

Anyway I do agree that it's nice to know what to wear from a practical point of view at least and I think your choice is ideal. I'm one of those people who over dresses in most peoples eyes lol and get comments as to the unsuitability of my outfits a lot.......I don't care and have never yet worn a ball gown at the zoo.
I hope you have a great time and a lovely birthday. |
