Question.

If you are working in a different place for a week/few weeks do you prefer to book hotels or prefer something else say through Airbnb or friends.

Do you go back home at weekend?

Thank you for your time.

always try to be home at weekends, but through the week, it all depends how often you’re in the same place. Airbnb are the preferred option for me if I’m away for a prolonged period, but one or two nights, I’ll stay in hotels. Avoiding chains where possible.

I prefer hotel. It’s easier, you get your room cleaned, you don’t feel as isolated and the breakfast and meals are a big perk.

Also with hotels I (or the client/company) don’t have to pay for the days when I’m not there. I definitely go home the vast majority of weekends and and most weeks are never full weeks on location. So a hotel provides more flexibility that way

I used to travel all over the UK with work before I retired and I usually stayed in Premiere Inns, Travelodges and the like when available. My preference though would always be a static caravan whenever I was close to any holiday places such as Devon or Cornwall.

I spent years working away.

Hotels by and large are the best option. As has been said, cleaning and fresh linen etc without any worries is a big plus, especially if you get in late and start early.

Occasionally the contract would offer the option of a payment in lieu of hotel accommodation, which would be more than enough to cover a short term rental of somewhere for a small group of us, but there would almost always be a requirement to find a maid to do the housework, particularly as the last few weeks of the job would normally be so busy we were seldom in the property longer than the time it took for a quick shower and four hours kip.

To be honest, the jobs I liked the most were the ones where I slept in the lorry.

I work all over the country, I can be gone for up to 3 weeks at a time before coming home but then I'll have a week at home without having to work! If I'm working with known colleagues I prefer a air bnb so we can socialise and cook etc, if I'm alone or with a new crew I'll choose an hotel. I love the separation of work and home, doubt I'll stop until they make me

My period of working away from home was all of the 1960s and most of the 1970s and was in the Construction industry. Depending on the size and duration of the contracts, accommodation could be Digs (Lodgings) Bed and Breakfast, on site Caravans, or when working on disused aerodromes we would use the existing buildings.

This was of course a time when we had no internet,no mobile phones, no Travelodge or Premier and no Airbnb.

With regards to weekends depending on how far you were away from home you had a free travel voucher every 6 or 8 weeks.

If the opportunity arose to get home at times I would always make the effort.

It was only when I got married that I went to work on sites where I could home every night.

Happy days

Thank you for your comments.

I have a room with own bathroom that I was looking at putting up for rent.

My reason for thinking about contractor type was more about potential for repeat custom

/Fewer people but still getting the weeks in

Work books all my accomodation for me, so it is usually hotels. Depending on where I am working I will try to get back home for the weekend.

I sometimes travel away to projects with a crew of half a dozen or so, but usually for no more than three or four days at a time. I normally book a room each for everyone at the nearest Travelodge or Premier Inn to site (including evening meal and breakfast). It's good to know for certain that everyone will have a comfortable room with shower, so they're well fed and rested every day. It's also good to know there'll be WiFi access for them to keep in touch with their families if need be. Knowing such things well in advance means I can concentrate better on the project and processes/safety on site. However, for my current project I'll be booking nearby glamping pods - we'll see how that goes.
