I live in derry Northern Ireland (famous for many reasons) but once you scratch the surface over here and see what it’s really like it’s scary, no money for mental health support, no support for struggling people. Lots of working people living bellow the poverty line left in silence and all this is ramped up by sectarian and drug related violence  this place is a shithole |

Hard to top Slough in all honesty, even my little town in South Wales..Llanelli.. beats Slough for now decending into a place where shops have now been boarded up and the general feel of the place is run down so you can lay claim to the top spot..at least we have a lovely coastline..lol |

Many places have value discounters/£ shops and chicken outlets but it doesn't automatically define them as a shithole.
I've not really been to Slough in years, apart from getting to the outskirts, after a detour, following a Heathrow trip.

Our town is a bit of a shithole and it’s partly tescos fault as they held the town to random when they were refused planning so left all its building empty for years that they owned since Tesco sold up they been promising to develop the old Tesco site and bits happen then stop for years been going on ages |

I'm in glasgow it has its good bits and bad like everywhere else. Worked in a lot of places in the uk Croydon being the worst. London as a whole is just to overcrowded and I dont see the attraction to it. Tenerife is where I'd like to live eventually |

I live not far from Birkenhead which doesn’t have the best reputation, but it is one of the cheapest places in the country to buy property as a result. I don’t think the UK has shitholes on the same level as the US does though. There’s a channel on YouTube where a guy drives all around the US filming all the towns, and many of them are really run down and underdeveloped, and would be an embarrassment in a developing country. |

I used to live in Hull during the City Of Culture year (the actual year and the run up to it). Now I live in Bath.
I would gladly trade Bath for Hull. I'm not kidding. Bath is increasingly going down the drain. And it's ironic that Hull has better bus services AND a better road network than Bath does. Not to mention southern prices vs northern prices! Don't be fooled by the whole tourist shtick about Bath being pretty and all. All that glitters isn't gold. |

Before I moved up north I was born and bred 5 mins from Bath!
It used to be beautiful, its turned into a shit show  also crazy expensive. Most of the unique places and quirky shops have gone.

What I never get is how do these people think you learn a language? It's not a magic pill you take at the border!
I studied German to A-level. Moving out there showed me just how little of the language I knew.
And that's a language that in theory is one of the easiest for English speakers to learn given the structure, tone and our most common words are Germanic in origin.
I tried but it was like someone learning queen's English then moving to Newcastle... It took months to be able to understand the local dialect and accent and longer speak enough German to be fully understood first time.
And when I was with my partner and we were having a conversation - of course it would be in English, it was our first language after all. |

I believe one of the factors why that happens is because the English is seen or considered as an universal language for this reason people assumes that everyone no matter wich country they speak/understand English at leastvthe very basic .
The reality is that is almost true and for that reazon the English people are amongst the ones who less know or less talk other foreign languages
Also because English people till now never been a country where emigration of their own people happens or happened compared with other countries , as i said till now because if this coming winter energy bill mostly gas becomes unaffordable, we may see many of us emigrating to Africa or Ecuador where gas is not necessary to warm one up |

Ignoring reasons of sentimentality, most people don't have the financial security/wealth to make permanent relocation elsewhere even a "choice" to be made.

The first place I moved to in yhe UK was Scunthorpe when I came over in Feb 2005. The place was so utterly squalid and depressing that I was on the first train out of therethe next morning. Lost my deposit on the accommodation and with the job agency that arranged it but it was totally worth it!
Bearing in mind that I'd been living in a in Mozambique before that. And had almost died in a hostage taking incident, that barely escaped from. The bit of Scunthorpe I saw, was actually a step down from the 3rd world squalor of Mozambique!

We've just moved and we're simultaneously 35mins drive from Manchester, about the same from Liverpool but with lovely countryside 5mins mooch away. Public transport links aren't brilliant, but nor were they in the previous area and here, we have a nicer house, which is suited for my needs. We're happy. It's not a shit hole. |

I've found that most xenophobes actually live in towns which have a majority white British population. You'll have a problem finding them in places like Hackney, Brixton (well, I speak for London anyway..I'm sure similar towns in the rest of England are the same). |
