When driving through roadworks on the motorway with a 50 limit, why do you feel the need to drive 2 foot off my bumper in the hope i will go a little quicker !

In the left lane, it’s unforgivable, they should use any speed delta to overtake. If you are in the middle lane and can’t move left, same rules apply, unforgivable. That said, if you’re in the middle lane and there’s space in the left lane, move over. Always use the left most lane available.

Also, you’ll probably find you’re only doing 47mph when your Speedo says 50mph

Car speedometer is often set slightly more than actual speed. Commercial vehicles speedo is calibrated at true speed so you are probably driving below the speed limit and holding the truck up especially if he needs momentum to get up incline without slowing too much.

I had a lorry driver flashing his headlight at me in a speed average check zone at 50mph. I was in the left lane and the other lanes were free ! He wouldn’t stop and kept on my rear bumper

Last night, in shocking conditions, wet, rain and more surface water than I’ve ever seen, I saw two lorries racing up the M1! Granted, they weren’t HGV’s but I was doing 60 (in the slow lane) and they were going way faster than me! I can only assume they were empty but they were not safe!

They cant use the outside lane, so wouldnt be able to overtake you in your in the middle lane

That’s why I said I’d you’re in the middle and can move left, you should

At no point did I suggest they should use the outer most overtaking lane

I find a lot of drivers get too close, not just lorries.

You'll see a line of cars in traffic all in each others bumpers. Weird. Supposed to keep a safe distance bit hardly anyone does...

Most HGV's are restricted below 56 therefore most truck drivers will keep vehicle on cruise control. Through roadworks they may not be able to use lane 2. Just give them space as they work tirelessly to put food and goods where we need them.

They need to reduce their speed to maintain a safe stopping distance, there is no excuse for driving too close to the vehicle in front

Not condoning the driving style at all, but my suggestion for the reason is that HGVs are usually restricted to 56mph. It’s probably less economical for them to continually drop to 48ish and get back up to 56mph. Obviously time is a factor in all commercial operations and they will have a schedule to meet.

They’re probably just trying to maximise their time and money, whereas it makes little to no difference to a private motorist.

If they’re that intent on sticking to 56mph, just move across one lane and let them slide by. You haven’t lost anything and neither have they.

For what it’s worth, I’d be stunned if cameras were set to ping you at anything below 60.

First point - there is no way a lorry driver should be doing that. I would report him for it.

Second point - what speed were you _actually_ doing?

I do a lot of motorway driving and I rarely see lorries tailgating cars - I might see one a month. What I do see are a lot of cars driving much slower than the 50 speed limit in an average zone. There is no need for that and it does hold the traffic that can’t overtake into restricted space lanes (ie lorries) up.

I am not condoning the lorries behaviour at all - it is wrong - but everyone should drive the road to the conditions.

In my experience, it seems many HGV drivers think a 50 limit doesn't apply to them as they tend to carry on at 56.

Maybe they're of the opinion that, as it's only 6mph above the posted limit, it's unlikely they'll be prosecuted.

They absolutely will not be prosecuted, almost all forces in the UK work on a 10% + 2 mph to start issuing FPNs, therefore, 57mph would be the start point and thus, 56mph whilst exceeding the posted limit, and thus breaking the law, will not be prosecuted and therefore becomes de facto acceptable.

I heard somewhere years ago that there’s a 10% leeway before fines are issued. Maybe that’s why

As a lorry driver, I find a lot of cars go about 40 in the 50 restriction, blocking up 3 lanes. We are not allowed in the outside. My working day is generally 12-14 hours every day, I get shouted at, threatened and abused multiple times every day.

I just want to do my job, get home to my wife. Yes sometimes we may annoy you, but before you lash out, please remember, we just want to do our job, a job which keeps the country going

It’s often forgotten that the driving lane is lane 1 and all other lanes are for overtaking only, returning to lane 1 when safe to do so

There seem to be a lot of attempted "justification" for lorry drivers driving too close to the vehicle in front. Ultimately though, it doesn't change the FACT that they MUST maintain a safe distance. There is no justification for tailgating, it is legally defined as dangerous driving and the cause of many accidents.
