Enjoy your celebrations, not really religious but respect those who are...

Easter for me is a celebration of new life and a welcoming of upcoming season

Gorgeous sunny morning, out with the dog as the sun rose. Looking forward to Easter Sunday and an early morning walk on Hampstead Heath with my dog - one year even came across a local CofE group having a sunrise service.

Always used to like doing the same at St Martha's in Guildford, and if there were Christians having a sunrise service, loved the hymns carring in the air.

People have faith and beliefs for all reasons and for some their faith is all they have, tolerance is key, some might not agree with other peoples religions and beliefs but we can respect it and understand it had true meaning to some

Where is the love? Drowning all the innocent babies on the planet bar one family? Hardening pharaohs heart so babies get killed? Killing tribes and keeping virgins by gods command? Christian Bible isn’t tolerant though. It’s full of hate, people owning as property, murder, child stoning, anti women, virgin implanting, jealousy and revenge.

What the Bible says is truthful and moral. And that everything in it is justified.

I'm not particularly religious but anyone who is, I think that's so good for them.

Yes it's all very difficult to believe but some religion has done excellent moral values and standards. Take the 10 commandments for instance.

Onr of my best friends is religious and he has helped me so many times with his guidance and words, even though I don't fully believe in religion. He doesn't ever preach to me but will simply say a quote or a few words that make sense.

Happy Easter to you whether you believe or don't.

People have faith and beliefs for all reasons and for some their faith is all they have, tolerance is key, some might not agree with other peoples religions and beliefs but we can respect it and understand it had true meaning to some

Christian Bible isn’t tolerant though. It’s full of hate, people owning as property, murder, child stoning, anti women, virgin implanting, jealousy and revenge.

FULL of hate etc.... are you sure

While there are some bad things in there from years back, wouldnt say oy was full of it

you do have a choice

Yes it is full. And according to Jesus, the New Testament is not an updated version of the Old. He changes nothing of what was preached before.

Look up Matt Delahunty on YouTube. An ex Baptist minister for over 20 years who now debates and knows the bible inside out.

Few more should listen to him and then try to excuse it

Excuse what?

What the Bible says is truthful and moral. And that everything in it is justified.

But earlier in the thread you said

"Even if I thought it was the truth, not a lover of the concept of a blood sacrifice. If He wanted to forgive man his sins, why not just do so?"

So you don't think the Bible is truthful yet you're getting your knick knacks in a knot about it.

I'm not getting my knick knacks in a knot about it at all. I'm joining in a discussion about it when people air their view... I am right, this is a forum isn't it?!?

A lot of discussion about something you don't believe...Right you are "

So just to be clear, those who don't believe in something shouldn't be able to discuss it?

This is not the sort of gagging I enjoy.

Happy Easter Shag.

While I’m not religious as such I am certainly fully aware of the meanings of this time of year. It’s a great time for reflection as the weather warms up, the sun shines a little more, and there is a little ray of hope for everyone.

I will be going for a walk through the daffs sometime this weekend and enjoying a new beginning that each of us, regardless of faith, can join in with

I knew this was going to get controversial!

I think that the reason people are replying negatively is because the original post is preachy.

Most people are not religious and don't believe in gods.

I think it better that if religious people want to preach, that's fine, do it in your own time and place, but not on a forum which isn't for religious proclamations.

What is it you think you are achieving by picking apart someones traditions with the loved ones that are now gone?

How does it impact or harm you in anyway to let them enjoy their long weekend in any way they wish?

You don’t need to have a faith to want to be a decent human being yet right now you seem to be hoping to get a kick out of tearing down part of others identity

Yes this place is open for everyone to comment but some of them over stepped and are derailing the thread.

They are continuing the negativity instead of taking their views to their own thread, but that wouldn't work would it, coz they clearly like to provoke.

Two bulls, are you in disguise?????

Well you say that is if nailing a guy in agony to wood is positive. To then say if yo don’t believe you will spend all eternity on fire. Positive? Also states it marks Easter as jests death. Rally it was pagan celebration. So not positive and not true"

Considering there are no written records of "pagan" celebrations and the fact that the Gregorian calendar wasn't even introduced until 1582, your references to "pagan" celebrations at specific times is just nonsense. The vast majority of it was made up by Victorian yahoos in the 19th century.

My stance is that people can believe as they choose. But making up history is another matter.

The Romans adapted local traditions as part of their conquest beginning way before the introduction of Christianity as part of their imperialism. Other calendars existed and we can pretty accurately estimate dates based on these and other historical/archaeological cues.

Written evidence is not the only way that historians determine what likely happened in the past, unless they have a pretty specific agenda - which usually invalidates their work.

"I knew this was going to get controversial!

I think that the reason people are replying negatively is because the original post is preachy.

Most people are not religious and don't believe in gods.

I think it better that if religious people want to preach, that's fine, do it in your own time and place, but not on a forum which isn't for religious proclamations.

Wheres the preachy bit in the op?

Stating Easter celebrates Jesus being killed. It’s not a fact by a long way.

Actually, and I'm not religious at all, but the historical consensus is crucifixion of Jesus did happen. It's the belief system built around it one can object to.

Sorry. No historical account of a son of god and crucifivtion. None whatsoever. Great writes and diarists at the time. Not one thought to write about it.

I didn't say 'son of god'. That's the belief system I was talking about. But the crucifixion is a different issue, and actually quite a lot of ancient records do talk about it. That's how historians have reached a broad consensus.

How many of them can you name?

How many of them rely on each other?"

I've only read James Dunn (obviously not an ancient source!). I'm not claiming to be an expert on ancient history by any stretch, so very happy to be corrected, but I didn't think the fact a man called Jesus lived and died that way was disputed.

Some people are really quite unnecessarily unpleasant on here. Bizarre behaviour. Discussion is great. passion is great. Insulting others and their beliefs is not big and its not clever.

I don't believe it therefore im going to take the piss and insult you. Be better.

Where are the insults? Somebody did insult me for stating facts but then deleted. It is usually the believers who insult as pointing out facts seems to upset them. Like saying god drowned babies according to their bible comes as a shock. Not to mention it never really happened and Easter was pagan. Bizarre

Happy Easter OP, I'm glad that you're enjoying this celebration and are taking time to reflex on its importance to you and to those that share your beliefs.

I'm not religious but Easter still provokes thought; I find it interesting that whilst the crucifixion was declared (by Christians) to have happened over 2000 thousands years ago, the world hasn't changed much; if a person today was to declare themselves to be a son or daughter of the Christian god, they would be ridiculed, ironically, mainly by the Christian Faith; they won't crucify them but would certainly look to discredit them.

Historians use archaeological records FFS. This isn't hard.

For example. In classical Athens there were written records of a device used for jury* selection. From context and the grammar of the word, they thought it was some sort of maze. Which is a hilarious image. Then archaeologists found the damn thing. It was a little device that rolled balls around, like a lottery machine, operated by an official owned by the city.

I don't care what people believe so long as they don't try to force it on others, some people think what I follow is very much out there but, if you post on a public forum, you are inviting comments which might reflect opposing opinions, especialy when it comes to faith and polotics. It's not one persons forum and when someone post, they have made it public.

This is part of the freedom of expression we have.

"No, I don't really get involved in easter to be honest. I've always wondered why it changes date though.

As it was a pagan celebration like Xmas, taken by the church to persuade the gullible. Like a Brexit of its day

Dude. Live and let live

Unlike Christians forcing this nonsense on us? Oh ok. "

What you might view as nonsense can bring sanctuary to others, that’s called faith.

I will claim that expertise, although in a different part of the ancient world.

The usual arguments are Tacitus (which mentions Christians), Josephus (from context cues this is likely a forgery - Josephus was Jewish, and the terminology he uses is not in line with what a Jewish person at the time would have said), and the Bible. Some people claim that every person who is named in the stories of the Bible is an independent source, which is (I'll use a technical term) horse shit. There are textual clues within the Gospels that most or all of them (off the top of my head) rely upon one another, making them not independent sources, and it's generally established that they are not contemporary accounts (which would be a better thing).

How independent are advocates for a religion? By which I mean, can we truly trust the Gospels as objective sources?

In addition, in the leadup to the Council of Nicea, there were significant purges of documents from the historical record, some of which had very different accounts of the life and times of Jesus. So what we have is what the powerful at the time decided was true based on their own ideology.

Given the mess of it (and this is my opinion as an expert straying out of her area, which is ancient Greece) - what I can conclude solidly about the life of Jesus comes from the barest scraps. There are some things there's no point in questioning because they make sense in the broader context and are mundane as fuck. So if a record showed up saying Pericles drank diluted wine (as was nearly universal)- yeah no shit Sherlock. Accept without looking into it.

On the basis of that miniscule standard of evidence - someone called (appropriate Hebrew version of) Jesus, son of (ditto) Joseph existed. Joseph was probably a carpenter, those existed. There were lots of roaming Jewish preachers claiming that the apocalypse was coming. So that's probably true. Everything else is up for interpretation and is pretty thin.
