Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Or the hijack game.

I'll start off and following the general topic how quickly can it mutate into a completely different subject? One post does not make for a mutation, that's just a boil that can be lanced!

Subject: Homework

Some of the children I know submit about half of their homework online. The teachers are available, via e-mail, until 9pm every evening to answer questions. I have mixed feelings about this. What do you think?

Why?

Sounds like voluntary unpaid overtime. What's the problem?

I don't see my daughter as much as I would like so the time I do have her I don't think it's right to clutter up her holiday time with homework (she was given quite a lot of homework over Xmas). These are supposed to be holiday times for the family so surely homework should be restricted to term time.

I think home work should be banned , I'm not a teacher of school work but a teacher of life.

Are these teachers the ones who work at the school who sets the homework, or is it a virtual site, like Education City? I work in a primary school, put in on average 10 hours a day, I leave at 5.30 and from then on its me and my family time. No way am I available until 9pm .

I'm not sure all of the teachers think it is voluntary - it is expected. My ambivalence is about having access to your teacher for your homework and by submitting it online they no longer write anything.

I have some worries about this as well but there is research to show that children are better able to maintain their learning if they don't take a long break from it during the holidays. I thought it was a bit much to set homework before they even started Year 7 though. A few days in the new secondary school before the end of term and leaving primary school and they were given a piece of homework for each new class.

It's an Academy model of working. It's homework set by the teacher. The teachers also post a comment on attendance and performance in class each day. We can log on and see what has been achieved each day, if we want. Each term the marks are then used to change streams for each class. So, if you were in the top stream at the beginning but start to fall behind you go down to a lower stream and if you improve you move up.

"Academy. Oh dear."

There was one featured on Breakfast this week that issues all pupils with iPads and they use them in lessons too. They also have teachers on call for homework.

my kids went to grammar school - work done in the 6th form could be emailed to teachers at any time - if it was a query they sent in it was often answered within reasonable times - not lower down the school though -

That's the "college" style of teaching. Although some schools could do to get rid o teachers that just shout and "slag" since they qualified. Kids "young adults" as sum teachers like to call their pupils respond betr to positive appraisal for the slightest achievement rather than a stigmatized response x

Here Enders my moan lol x

And those who hijack threads haven't posted I see, maybe its because you mentioned the word hijack and they know who you are talking about and don't want to be seen as a hijacker, and one that posts nonsensical bollox

My children are no longer in school, when they were, this was not available to them, least they didn't mention to me anyway. Its a great idea but I don't think many children would take advantage of it

Give them some credit and self respect by clothing them in something fashionable!!

It's a tricky one this because I remember plenty of times I was at school and was given homework to do on a Friday to be handed in Monday, got home, sat down to do it and didn't have a clue. Having a teacher to be able to contact would of been very helpful at the time.

But from the teachers point of view if its unpaid overtime they do not agree to but just have to do its not really fair,

As for the writing thing, I used to live writing with my Parker fountain pen at school.

I think it's un fair on teachers and students alike the government expects too much from both kids are made to grow up faster with a higher preasure rate and more stress what happened to kids being kids and playing out all they do now is sit in the house on some form if computer this is why they become obese and added is the preasure of exam failing so many binge eat to overcome this plus why would anyone want to do unpaid overtime many have families too

I can't take women seriously while they have these brows that look like they've used a flat tipped marker to do them.

I remember when some women used to draw in a thin line eyebrow well above the natural brow. A very strange look.

I know a few teachers and they spend a fair chunk of the "holidays" on professional development, sorting out the previous term and preparing for the term to come. Starting at 8am (some schools now start earlier) and finishing their on call homework stint at 9pm.

That's become quite fashionable to get your eyebrows tattooed. You can also get your top liner on your eyes done now. I don't think I would do either though.

Hence why I wouldn't have it done even though I wear black top liner every day. But when I am getting older and greying I am sure it won't look great.
