"For real? Of course they do "
Yes serious question. I know someone who is an absolute and has never paid any taxes. They have never come after him.
Makes me wonder. |

They may catch them one day. They may not. It’s a big risk though. |

"Do they ever come after anyone?
But not with threatening phone calls or emails. They always arrive in a small brown envelope through the door."
Even if that person has never been tax registered? |

Some creative accounting among the self employed can get them out of paying a lot of tax. My step dad has never paid a penny since becoming a self employed accountant…….read into that however you like |

"Loads of people get away with evading taxes. "
They sure do. A lot of people are skilful at avoiding taxes which is legal but plenty hide stuff illegally which they should be declaring. |

True. I have a good accountant. All legal though. A lot of people don’t know what they can claim for. Actually paying an accountant instead of doing it myself has saved me a fortune. |

My mate married a lady who has since become an accountant and now they have properties, flash cars and a yacht. Always going on holiday and eating out most nights. Basically living the millionaire lifestyle. Not that long ago they didn't have ten pence to scratch their arse.
Read into that however you like. |

Someone recently told me about something called quick books ? Online. However I rather pay my accountant and get advice when I need it. |

Precisely, if you see a poor accountant, they aren’t one you want to work for you |

"I’m told by people I would expect to know that they have a threshold (a £ figure) below which they don’t act. "
Considering they claw back even tiny overpayments of tax credits, even when it's HMRC who made the mistake, I'd find that surprising....... |

Yeah there is certainly something dodgy about it. They may know how to push the law to the limit. |

"Do they ever come after anyone?
"
Of course they do.
At 65 years old and self employed from the age of 22, i have suffered 2 tax investigations. The first was just a random investigation when i was 28. It was very very stressful and nothing was found.
The second one was when i was 52 and that was much much worse. It took over a year and the woman that was the investigator took an instant dislike to me from day one. At the time i thought she had some sort of point to prove for her position within HMRC. In the end, she was actually sacked and i was awarded compensation.
My point in answering this question is quite simple, yes, they do come after people.
When they do though, even if you have nothing to hide, they can and will make your life hell. |

What are you getting out of this ? |

Oh yes. They are an evil organisation. Incompetence combined with self-righteousness and a lot of legal clout.
They came after me for mistakes they made which I pointed out to them many times. They fined me over ten grand for their consistent mistakes. They have never formally recognised their errors, apologised or returned my money. I'm still fighting for it six years years later. |

The beauty of the IRS coming after you is that you say nothing. You contact your lawyer who will tell you (the suspect) in no uncertain terms to make no statement to the police or agents under any circumstances.
Talking to the police/agents cannot help you.
At the interview or you plead the 5th amendment and shut up completely because even truthful answers can be used against you in court.
If they contact you by phone you tell them (at the direction of your lawyer) you will only talk if you have immunity from prosecution in writing. They rarely call back.

"It depends how far you take the piss and whether you take the appropriate steps to cover your tracks from what people tell me. "
Yeah. When I first went self employed I was told that I shouldn't of done it. He said I should of went limited. I don't know why. Maybe someone can enlighten me, please? |

I was going to say as much, but couldn't be bothered. The IRS doesn't have much jurisdiction here either! |
