Some men have a lot more experience behind the wheel but it doesn't make them a better driver.
Some women don't have an understanding of their vehicle and that leaves them less experienced.
I'd say it would be the person with the most common sense. |

Anyone, regardless of gender can be a good driver given correct instruction, good general awareness and a good head.
I like to think I'm a good driver but a bow at the feet of Sabine Schmidt, not only is she a woman but she's a German too! |

I don't drive so I can't really comment.
I do know from experience where I live tho that young lads hammering round in their boy raver cars are bloody dangerous. And that little old people going 2 miles an hour are just as bad although would be less damaging to be hit by them. Lol x |

Good call, but anyone could drive the 'ring that well if you'd done as many laps as she has. I'd love to do a few laps of that place. |

All depends on age, experience, understanding of the road etc. I am not a bad driver, never had or caused an accident (as far as I know! ) but does does that make me a good driver!! Not for me to say, but I know because, I am, after all a woman lol, now will take cover!! |

Hard one to call this , women are safer but doe's safer mean better?
On balance due to having to take more driving tests, spending more hours behind the wheel, truck drivers ( who are mostly male ) leave the rest miles behind .
But having lots of experience can make you switch off when driving , driving becomes boring |

I did 'The Ring' a few years ago in my old Skyline GTR. I have an advanced licence and still found it tough to get a decent time. |

No, he's not in the BMW team - unfortunately, but he's been doing it for nearly 30 years and knows a lot of the well-known names. Taking him to the airport next week, so I might start the ball rolling.....

Wish I could shout that at some of the idiots I come across everyday on the M25. If there is one thing doing 100k a year for 13 years teaches you it is 'treat everyone like an idiot who can and will do the stupidest things without warning and right in front of YOU'...

Is this question for real?!!
Silly boy.
Erm it is of course WOMEN. Due to two facts.
1. We can multitask ie. concentrate on road as well as control the vehicle.
2. We do not feel the need to drive up other drivers arses. |

Funny how you can multitask, but are unable to drive past a shoe shop and drive on a straight line at the same time

Swings and roundabouts....some men are idiots, some women are idiots. Some men can be aggressive, some women have a death grip on the wheel and stare straight ahead and never look at whats going on around them.
I don't think the comment about truck drivers is right though as most don't know /stick to their stopping distances.
But I am going to have to go against the sisterhood and say men ( not boy racers ) are the better drivers, as I think some women dither too much.

I shall resist the urge and actually offer a serious observation for a moment. After 34 years driving (Jeeeez - is it that long???) and in just the last ten years having driven about a million miles (plus all the stuff before) there is something I have noticed about the difference (if there is one) between women and men as drivers.
With men, you get a broad spectrum of abilities, from completely crap at it (yes, there are some.... maybe more than 'some') to exceptionally good, with every ability level in between.
With women though, there is hardly any middle ground. They 'appear' to be either exceptionally good (credit where credit is due, and I have met my fair share of exceptional women drivers) or exceptionally poor/bad (the kind who are doing their make up in the car, don't make kids put belts on, are chatting on the i-phone etc etc etc).
Other than that, I really can't put my finger on which is 'better'... different, yes. But not better...

Thing that gets me with car drivers in front of a truck is that they will stick doggedly to their lane/speed and think they are being 'clever' holding the truck back... instead of doing a quick bit of mental arithmetic... car weight = 1 ton.. truck weight = 40 tons... truck right behind me.... see it all the time on the M25..

That being said, its not fun when you're in the middle lane doing 70(ish) with no safe way to get over to the outside lane and a trucker pulls out with little or no warning doing 56 trying to overtake another truck also doing 56!...lol |

How can it be poor planning on my part? I cannot dictate what vehicles are doing in other lanes. If I'm in the middle lane and driving at a legal speed and the lane ahead of me is clear, then its the truck driver who is at fault for not checking its safe to manoeuvre. |

I would say cyclist and motorcyclist who also drive make the best drivers male or female, because you have to ride for everyone else and have to assume everyone is blind and not seen you and are about to pull out on you, you develope a sort of sixth sense for who's going to do it, and that carries in to driving a car you still watch out for everyone else |

I reckon women are more careful and less prone to errors but men are better parkers and handlers of a car.

I would say in my experience wagon drivers and bus drivers are the worst drivers because they have size and just try to bully people out of there way, not all but a lot do
And I agree on the motorway your in the middle lane over taking slower vehicles the 3rd lane is full with people over taking you and then the wagon driver waits until your 10 ft from his wagon and then pulls out usually without indication and your left with nowhere to go |

Some women are better, like me.
I have the mindset when driving that everyone else is going to do something stupid and I watch meticulously what other drivers around me do.
Truckers are a nightmare, relying on their size and I have had many incidents where they have nearly wiped me out.
I normally give them a very wide berth.
Buses the same and one double decker bus the other day decided not to give way to me at a roundabout even though I was half way across.
I had anticipated his dangerous driving and managed to prevent an accident! |

I don't go fast enough to get to the middle lane I work for Tesco max speed 50 so I'm sorry if you get held up by me and speaking as a truck bus driver that also rides a push bike and a Vespa scooter but does not and will not drive a car. Think that the car/van drivers are the most thoughtless mindless idiots on the road

"men or women?"
I'd say mostly men. I have been hit 3 times in my car and knocked off my bike three times too. All by women drivers
I personally think I'm a good driver but I have spent a lot of time on advanced training and hours and hours of track time.

Lorry drivers in my experience think that they have a huge lorry so people will get out of my way. As previous poster said about nearly getting wiped out by lorries I've had my fair experience of this as well. I've been in 4 smashes and only 1 my fault. All been men that have run into me and I ran into someone but the arsehole in front cut me up then slammed his brakes on and I ran into him but I got the blame of it as I hit him hmmmm. So technically none my fault but I was blamed for that 1. Taxi drivers are really bad as well. Another set that they think try own the road.
Lorry drivers
Buses
Taxis
In that order I think are the worst.
I'm sitting on the fence on whether male or female drivers are worse
Guys mostly drive too fast and think they own the road
Women mostly drive too slow too busy listening to music lol. |

"what's going to happen when we're in self driving cars? who will we rant about then?"
Well, we've been blaming things on the in-car computers and sat-navs for years, so having yet another computer to pour scorn on won't be a problem

"Lorry drivers in my experience think that they have a huge lorry so people will get out of my way.
" suggest you try driving a lorry mate not all are idiots lost count of the amount of times whilst turnin left at a tight junction positioned truck to be able to swing in clearly indicating left and some brainless idiot in a car bligthly sale down the inside of me and block my turn . stop out side a depot hazard lights on reverse lights and alarm on and still numb nut motorist drives right up to the back of me into my blind spot .wont mention the amount of cyclists who have ridden there bikes through a red light strait at me when turning right at lights then shook thier fist at me when they nearly end up under my truck .
face it there are idiots in charge of practicly everything with wheels the trick is being ready to take evasive action when they prove it |

"I don't think the comment about truck drivers is right though as most don't know /stick to their stopping distances
as a truck driver i would say that this is mainly due to idiot car drivers changing lanes into the trucks braking area left by the truck driver
That being said, its not fun when you're in the middle lane doing 70(ish) with no safe way to get over to the outside lane and a trucker pulls out with little or no warning doing 56 trying to overtake another truck also doing 56!...lolpoor planning on his part poor planning on your part observation of the road ahead and use of mirrors should prevent that antisipation prevents you getting into that situation If I see two trucks bumper to bumper in lane 1, I automatically assume the following one is going to pull out.... very soon!
I do, but sometimes its not safe to get into lane 3 in time. That's the point I wad trying to make"
Its easier for you in a car to ease off and then pull into the 3rd lane when you have the chance..
Once a loaded truck loses momentum its very hard to get it going again..
You are just another typical car driver that doesn't have a clue what driving 44 tons of killing machine on the road is like. |

I have a class 2 HGV licence and driven all kinds of trucks (both in and out of the army), yet I've never felt the need to pull out and try to overtake a vehicle that is doing exactly the same speed as myself....lol
I know what you mean though, there's a lot of ignorance on both sides, my point was aimed squarely at the.Muppets out there who don't check their mirrors before pulling out in to faster moving traffic. |

To just single out truck drivers is crazy ..

This always happens on threads were people critisize truck drivers and the way they drive....we can't all be wrong when we say they drive too close and pull out in front of you when you have no where to go.
Truck drivers might do it for a living, but some drive too close and there is no getting away fromj it. If people say they have never seen this then maybe they need to be aware of what is happening on the motorways when they drive them.

Bearing in mind the thread that was posted was Men or Women. Anyone can belt down a motorway at 80 90mph and think they are a good driver. Straight road, all to be aware of are traffic coming from sliproads and the odd muppet pulling out in front of you and slow movers. Real test is driving on other roads, reading the road, limit lines, paint etc and looking well ahead while driving at speed, unexpected hazards etc. Those that can do it safely are the better drivers. That could be men as well as women.Boys racers are a liability and should have restrictors fitted to their cars |

What is the definition of a good driver? I would say a good driver is one who is properly trained and fully experienced at driving in their own particular field. Damon Hill, for example, may have been a good racing driver, but he had many accidents on public roads because he was crap at road driving. A highly skilled motorcyclist would be a crap off-road driver if he/she didn't have the proper training or experience.
For my job, I had to pass both Road Craft driving (emergency services)and defensive driving tests and have to do updates and re-assessments twice a year. I am a crap bumper-car driver because I keep missing
Male or female doesn't really come in to it - training and experience do. |

I think maybe a bit of back tracking going on by you now.
You can't have it both ways, you either think it is ok for a truck driver in a 44 ton killing machine ( your words) to pull out in front of a car that is going faster than it or you don't.
Going by your posts you expect the car to slow down or move out of your way, so I am guessing you think it is ok to do.

How do define boy racer. As they are restricted already by insurance. And btw I'm what I guess some would term a girl racer. As I used to organise events. And was very vocal on the cruising is not a crime events

Yes I agree, going by what I see all the time there are a lot of people who don't know how to use the motorway....thats in trucks and cars.
So to sum it up....you don't think it is ok for a truck to pull out in front of a car, but it would be good for people to be courteous and move over if it is safe to do so?
And if they can't find a gap to pull over to then you think they are , in your words
" just another typical car driver that doesn't have a clue what driving 44 tons of killing machine on the road is like."
I think most people would glady move aside for a truck if they had somewhere to go.....but I think some truck drivers forget, we all pay road tax, not one type of driver has precedent over another ( unless you have flashy blue lights )
Manners on the roads wouldn't hurt for a lot of people I think.

Mostly in 1.2 cars. As an ex cruise driver. We had rules. Yeah some broke them. But most abided by them. My cars were heavily modified but there is a time and place. Although I got pulled over for driving to sensibly for the car I was in. Work that one out. Lol apparently I looked suspicious
I'm guilty of congregating on a retail car park after it was shut. Not really hurting anyone though. Boy racers aren't what they used to be. I remember a convoy where we knew we were about to get pulled over. So we split off every which way. Lol looked epic. Sounded awesome. I parked up and got passed by being a girlie.

Agree with what you have said, but my comment was reinforced a few months ago when I took my PCV D1 hazard perception test - at the tender age of 51!! This was one of the hazards on the test I did, and I failed it by one point as I did click the button to register it as a hazard... yet it's something I do instinctively after being taught to 'expect the worst' on a Police driving course I did 30 years ago...

It is called reading the road....if it is safe to move into another lane knowing that the car/truck inside of you is probably going to be pulling out soon then that is common courtesy to me.
It becomes a problem if that person pulls out anyway and makes you brake.
You can't always tell with trucks though, as a lot of them drive close anyway. |

"
Thats just it most of them don't move over..
Most of them have no idea what driving a truck is like, they think it reacts the same as a car.
Thats why i say yeah another typical car driver, don't forget most truck drivers drive cars also so see it from both sides.

And its not a myth woman can't reverse..
Oh yes we can!!!!
Rubbish !!
Spend a day in your average supermarket car park filming. You could make a comedy film out of women trying to reverse into spaces.
Don't most people drive forwards into supermarket parking spaces.... so they can get to the boot with their shopping.
You should pay better attention "
I can still get to the boot of my car if i reverse in.
Just means you have to take the bags out of the trolley. |

It has been proven by the insurance industry that the claims for damage to vehicles caused by women in road accidents are fewer in number than the mens.
BUT!
There are more male drivers on the road than women.
BUT
Their files show that the average cost of repairs following an accident where the woman is at fault is 40% higher in cash terms than the average claim where a man is at fault.
NOTE
I am slightly biased due to the fact I was hit by a woman who turned right in front of me and knocked me off my motorcycle, her defence was that "I did not see you, and you should have known that I was turning right into that driveway because I was indicating and I have lived in that house for 20 years and everyone knows me and where I live" This latest addition to the post will cause ructions, I can feel the ladies getting all annoyed as I type. |

"Not at all.
Your blind sexism demonstrates a lack of logical thought which is always the best of reasons not to get involved."
Not blind sexism, its a matter of record, the Insurance industry via data protection law keeps on record all incidents and costs involved. The statement was given to the Police by the woman as explanation of the accident (as I was unconcious at the time having gone over the bonnet of her car and suffered head injuries) and my solicitor had obtained the evidence which was used in my claim for compensation. Because it is always assumed that a motorcyclist is a hooligan exceeding the speed limit they are always blamed for causing an accident.(That is blind biogotry and irrational)
My ex-mother in law who was 75 at the time was run over by a woman who overtook at a pelican crossing because the lights had changed from red to amber and the car in front had not moved, not thinking there was a reason for it she overtook and hit her. Mother in law she spent 2 month in hospital (is it sexist for mentioning this as well)
Sexism is discrimination based on gender, if the facts are verifyable then it is discriminatory practice to dismiss them because they seek to turn facts into fiction because they portray a particular section of society in a negative light. |

I know what sexism is.
I didn't dispute your 'facts' I didn't check them.
I'm talking about your irrational sexism. |

I would say men in general as most professional drivers are men!
But if you mean driving as in poping to the shops then it's neither here or there anyone can do that!! |

Love it, I really do! My son used to ride a 50 cc moped, he was travelling home when a woman, ahead of him, pulled up to 'park' at the side of the road then pulled right across the road in front of him to pull into the parking area in front of a chip shop. Her defence was that he "was going very fast" and that he overtook a car. As you will well know, top speed of a 50cc moped is 30mph, not only that, she saw him coming, knew he was behind her yet still pulled across the road. Lets not count the fact that she was in the position to do a U-turn where she was parked. Anyway my son hit her car damaging the wheel arch panel and wrote his moped off, luckily he saw the silly cow turn across the road and swerved, had he not, he could have been killed, all for a bag of fish and chips |

Not really, Worked temping in a large logistics company, they employed approx 50 drivers moving stuff from warehouse to warehouse using a variety of trucks. there were 7 women drivers on the 44 ton artics doing a variety of runs every day.they were as good as the men. th emain reason why you dont see many women is because only recently there has been pressure to earn the money to keep the roof over the families head, its a crap lifestyle, some drivers are not home for 3-5 days per week due to job demands, with no toilets when you need them, living out of a rucksack and poor food it takes its toll on your health. Its not a job I would recommend to anyone who is family orientated and likes human company. |

Old people are by far the worst.
Followed by truck drivers who believe they own which ever part of the road they want.
Then sales reps.
In my eyes. I'm the safest driver, that's because I'm in charge of my car.
Didn't help when some sod hit me head on a few years ago and totally smashed my wrist. Was nice of the sales rep to think coming round the corner on the wrong side of the road was the best idea he had.
Still, every cloud has a silver lining and all that |

That's just a cultural thing. Historically women haven't been profesional drivers/ pilots/ ships masters but it's changing.
Lots of women moving into command positions in the Navy. |

"woman , lol we can drive putting our make up on doing our hair putting our lippy on and still keep the car on the road
Says it all !"
One of my work colleagues saw a woman on the slip road from Tewkesbury to the M5 putting her make up on as she drove down it so I think I agree with you |

"Hard one to call this , women are safer but doe's safer mean better?
On balance due to having to take more driving tests, spending more hours behind the wheel, truck drivers ( who are mostly male ) leave the rest miles behind .
But having lots of experience can make you switch off when driving , driving becomes boring "
Lots of experience can cause over confidence which is a very bad thing.
Woman have a poorer ability at reading the road ahead but are safer as they don't take the risks men do. Men will take the risk as he will be saying well it the other drivers fault if we crash. How many men u heard say that
Example: 2 cars both heading for a narrow gap of vehicles parked both sides. One male one female. The man will speed up and enter the narrow gap, the woman will notice last minute, see the danger and stop. If that was 2 men they would both go for the gap and 2 woman will both stop haha
That's the general way |

Its hard enough getting me down the side of parked cars let alone with bags in my hand.. Also I'm not up for leaving a trolley full of paid shopping unattended for that long! Ill stick to going in front ways thanks |

"men or women?"
Statistically its men if you go by miles between accidents although its the opposite with younger female drivers based on a time scale not mileage. |
