I have been woken up by the hubby rolling around the bed in agony cause his tooth he broke and wouldn't have removed has developed an infection. He is using oral gel and 400mg ibuprofen. Neither shifts the pain yet he is still reluctent to go the dentist due to a sever fear of needles and surgical procedures. For a 6'5 big burly fella its amazing that this is his biggest weakness. How can I get him to go the dentist to have his tooth sorted, the infection is getting so bad his face is starting to swell, in fact he resembles a squirrel stirring nuts lol |

Its ridiculous. Its horrible seeing him in go much pain and nothing will relieve it. I think I.might try the Drs in the morning to see if they can get him pain killers and antibiotics then I'll get him to see the dentist to discuss what options he has, other than that its raid his toolbox and pull the offending tooth myself lol |

Some hospitals have dental practices where the patient (victim) is sedated enough to have problems sorted out, see if you can get him to one of these.
The dentist is probably the biggest fear going so very common.
Alternative is to bait him with a meet of his choice, donkey and carrot scenario! |

If your drs are like ours, anything to do with teeth they wont touch, he needs antibiotics for the abcess asap,.so even though he doesnt like the dentist its probably his only option.
You could try talking to a pharmacist to see if they can reccommend a stronger pain killer, but a trip to the dentist for antibiotics is the best course otherwise infection and pain wont go away. Good luck x |

I don't know where his fear comes from, he had major surgery when younger and had no problems with any injections or needles etc. His fear is so bad he waited so long when he had appendicitis that when he got to hospital he was so I'll he was rushed into surgery and was in surgery for 6 hours as his appendix burst and he had infection throughout his body because of it. I think hospital maybe the best thing for him, but even sedation requires a jab lol |

Previous poster is right, your doc will just tell you to see a dentist. He needs antibiotics to clear the infection before they do anything else.
Your local primary care trust will have details of emergency dentists in your area. |

The dentist will give him a prescription for antibiotics and if your hubby doesn't like needles they can rub some gel on to numb his gums like they do before giving kids ( or adults who have a needles phobia ) the jabs. Good luck and hope he gets it seen to soon, he doesn't want the infection to spread and eventually rot his jaw. |

Firstly he will need to get rid of the infection, so the doctors for antibiotics. He can take Ibruprofen and paracetemol for the pain.
you can't have your tooth taken out at a hospital without a referral from a dentist, so he will have to get over his fear and go I'm afraid.
Its a very common fear and dentists are really sensitive to needle phobic patients |

It does very much depend on the GP..mine knows I am dental phobic so will sometimes give me antibiotics as an emergency and has then referred me to the sedation clinic at the dental dept at the hospital so it may be worth a try. Also according to the NHS website walk in clinics and minor injury units will deal with dental emergencies (which again is likely to be painkillers and antibiotics)

The pain must be bad as he gas got himself an appointment today at 11am. I heard the words, "they can pull the thing with no relief, I need it out" I think the fact he couldn't eat his toast this morning tipped him over the edge lol |

I didn't go to the dentist for 10 years and it was tooth pain that eventually made me go back. I'm now not scared of going at all! Tell him to swill his mouth round with hot water with salt in. It brings the infection out and helps with pain. |

like said needs antibiotics to shift the abcess before tooth is removed. Im a bit like him with dentists and needles the hard part for you will be getting him to go back after he's had antibiotics as all pain will go most likley! good luck and incase you don't know oragel comes in different strengths the good one can only be got from behind the counter at pharmacy! good luck to him took me a while to get over my fear of dentists but still no good with needles |

Well, he went to emergency dentist, and was informed he had a self draining absess. And that the tooth could be removed!! He looked as though the dentist told him he wad going to remove his Willy, after three injections to numb his jaw my hubby looked like he was going to pass out, he was white sweaty and shaking!! But he mustered enough courage have his tooth removed. It was a huge hurdle and hopefully one we won't face again lol |
