The Big Help Out

Ok, I’ve got over myself with the forum leavers (just!)

Tonight I’ve seen The Big Help Out, with an app launched to promote volunteer work/ helping others. I’ve done a lot of all that and it can do a lot for you, doing good for others. Some experiences are better than others though -collecting money for the RNLI in torrential rain wasn’t the best

Have you ever volunteered? What are your experiences? Would you do it again?

Tell all!

Somewhere near here

I’ve done and still do a lot of volunteering. Was a scout leader for 16 years, various community groups, baby groups, breastfeeding counsellor, youth groups.

I like to be kept busy

I would love to say I have done loads but I haven’t, I have a app which is a local thing and have put myself out there for people unable to get there shopping or help with what I do for work.

I volunteered to help decorate a room in a homeless shelter a good few years back. It was depressingly eye opening.

your wildest dreams,

I’ve also taught adults to read in the past. My voluntary stuff lately revolves around my passions. I’m a marine mammal medic and I’ve done marine conservation work in this country and abroad

All very rewarding

Deepest darkest Peru

I previously volunteered for the charity I now work for and also for a neonatal charity which supported us when my grandson was born and then lost his fight

Giving time is just as important as monetary donations

I don’t volunteer for any companies anymore, I just help any local homeless, a good backpack or charger blocks, food or blankets, whatever I have or can order online

I was so proud of one guy who got himself off the streets, into a stable relationship and working, he’s so much happier and it’s great to see that smile now

Manchester (she/her)

I've done a reasonable amount of volunteering most of my adult life, through small charities. It's incredibly rewarding and makes you feel part of something bigger and more meaningful than the usual BS

I was a Rainbows leader for quite a while, I loved doing that. Also other stuff that's a bit personally identifiable.

I've done lots in the past, from running toddler groups, organising charity/fun days to cat rescue. Sadly don't really have the energy for anything like that anymore.

I've volunteered most of my life but never again.

I've been a member of various charities including a SAR team.

I've literally spent days lying out in every type of weather imaginable to help them train.

I've also been a trustee of a few charities and witnessed numerous people using their position to procure equipment for personal use.

Vehicles purchased with money raised by volunteers on street collections used by these individuals in their own private businesses while others have feathered their nests in other ways.

I've argued and fought with them over many years to no avail and in the end got tired and gave up.

I've seen so many volunteers give up so much of their free time only to be slapped in the face by idiots like that and then walk away disillusioned vowing never to volunteer again.

I volunteered in the Nursing home my Father in law was residing in

I used to visit him daily and was always struck by how little time the staff had for the residents beyond caring for their needs so it started off by just sitting in the day room chatting to the residents while my father in law dozed, they loved it and I loved learning about the amazing lives they had led.

So I started visiting more, some loved books but couldn't read much so I used to read to them, play games, fetch tea and just generally be around for company. Some residents never had visitors so their only interactions were with each other and the staff. Made me really sad

I found it rewarding and a privelige and made me see that the most precious gift we can give is time and it costs nothing

If you ever saw my ex husband you'd know I've done more than my share of Charity work

In all seriousness having worked in third sector for years ,volunteers are so important and it really does make a difference.

Thank you

I've regularly volunteered in my community for the last 13 years or so. Mainly in areas that involved young people and music. I enjoy just giving something back to society, and generally don't shout about my volunteering, I just quietly go about it

I donated lots of time to various kennels when I was a dog trainer. I also took several of the dogs home, one is still with me now although he is getting very old now sadly

I've volunteered at loads of different things from helping at youth groups, bag packing, bake stalls etc.

Can sometimes be a dread after agreeing to help but always end up having fun and meeting loads of lovely people

There's an app called "be my eyes" that allows blind and partially sighted people to connect with a sighted volunteer for a small task.

I had someone call to ask me to read the best before dates on his cereal, for example. When your phone rings, if you can't take the call it does to someone else so no pressure.

I’ve been a Rainbow & a Brownie leader for years in the past.

Listened to children reading in a school in a deprived area.

Wolf has sailed on the tall ships helping others to learn how to sail.
