Slough, as previously mentioned: So shit that it even prompted the late poet laureate, Sir John Betjeman to compose a highly derogatory poem dedicated to the place.

It is also said that Queen Victoria was so disgusted by the town that she used to close the curtains in the royal car on the train whenever she passed through.

I was travelling back north on the M1 only to discover that it was closed near Milton Keynes and was likely to remain closed for several hours.

I managed to get off the motorway and drove towards Milton Keynes in the direction of the M40 to continue my journey north. I took a wrong turn at one of the dozens of traffic islands and ended up in a ghetto estate, it was grim. It seemed a soulless and unloved place.

Jaywick OMFG. I stayed in that Caravan park years ago , the coast there is nice and quiet but wandered into the actual town and pubs and thought o was hallucinating or had been transported into an alternative universe!

It’s actually very very similar to a place just north of Perth in Western Australia , a crayfishing community of squatters on the beach in shacks that are high on crack and violent as fuck

Somewhere In The Ether…

Funnily enough, I have just seen that the 2019 ‘winner’ for crappest town in the UK (as voted for in polls) was Peterborough.

I’m quite surprised by this as the part I visited was really pretty with some lovely architecture.

One reviewer quoted the following to justify the nomination though: ‘It’s the biggest dump in England with aggressive and inbred residents.’

Nice

Southend - was not so bad when I first moved there but slowly it has become a drug and gang riddled hole, how the hell they won City status I do not know.

Scunthorpe - you know you're there as the smell hits you from the steel works (although admittedly this is one of my childhood memory smells) and the town has literally run down over the years

And lastly where I love, any money the council have in grants have been spent on completely the wrong thing and making them look good for all the wrong reasons, the areas that need the help are having budget cuts and struggling

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’m going to put forward my own town to: High Wycombe.

Long gone is the idyllic and quite charming historical imagery of chair makers applying their craft whilst sat on tree stumps in the middle of the leafy woods; the reality is sadly now a hive of scumery, boarded up shops and litter strewn streets.

We were proud to achieve the coveted number nine spot in Crap Town’s a few years back and regularly feature in the top twenty in polls

High Wycombe has been a dump for many years

I'm going to throw Loughborough in to the mix.

I didn’t enjoy living in Southampton very much. It was described to me once as the hole in the donut, which is probably a fair description.

It literally stinks of shit as well!!

It's not as bad now the cellophane factory has closed.

But it does smell of shit in the summer when the farmers are befouling their fields "

Anywhere in the country stinks when farmers are "manure" spreading,

I remember the first time I visited Kent I stayed in Gravesend and I didn't like it at all, never did go back to work there.

The Isle of sheppy is another place marked off my list of places not to visit again.

Come across a few places up north which I haven't liked aswell, and also in the valleys.

"Peterborough

Chatham"

Peterborough Cathedral is lovely. I went there for a wonderful concert to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Katherine of Aragon's marriage to Henry VIII. I confess I don't know the rest of the town.

My shout would be Croydon. The absolute quintessence of suburbia. Most of the places mentioned in the thread are impoverished, with all the predictable problems that causes. But Croydon isn't poor. It's smug, drab, and irredeemably vulgar.

Another one I had tried to forget is Mansfield. Had a few nights at the Premier Inn there, whilst doing an induction course for work. First evening work colleague went outside for a cigarette. Lady in reception asked if was going into the town. Her advice was not to go into the town centre alone after dark

Leicester. Went there to try out a daytime "club", and it turned out to be a full-on knocking shop.

As I had booked a hotel for the night, I went out around the town for a bite to eat. Stopped into a pub, and before I had chance to even get to the bar, one guy was signalling from a distance that he wanted to take me outside.

Years ago I use to chat with a girl from a small town in Essex. She would praised her town and she would always make fun of Wales and run it down to me over the phone. Years later I decided to visit her town to see what I was missing and Harlow was very disappointing to say the least. I don't like to call anywhere a shit hole but it instantly came to my mind.

I used to pass through Wolverhampton on the train to Birmingham regularly.

I remember thinking whenever I went through that with all the crumbling, derelict factories and buildings there, it would make for a brilliant filming location for a post apocalyptic themed film.

Probably not the best advertisement to live there though
