Not what I would have chosen to say, and he's no fool either - he owns a string of racehorses and has a sunstantial property portfolio - so was it a deliberate freudian slip.  |

Iv always thought of michael owen as 1 of the more down to earth non egotistical footballers about,especially when you consider he was an exceptionally gifted player at his peak,but perhaps with alot of people reading+following you on something like twitter you should be more carefull how you phrase something even when offering compliments,that said doubt anyone thinks he was trying to be offensive in any way |

FFS,,,,,Sorry but this just smacks of yet another example of pseudo outrage erupting from the tiny minds of sad individual who’s own lives lack purpose ….!.
Michael Owen was only 5 yr old when the Bradford disaster happened….!.

I agree. Some things can be considered sensitive at the time or for a period afterwards but it's been almost 20 years since the Bradford fire. |

It's actually nearly 30 years rather than 20 years (unless thats just a typo). Owen simply made a statement made by many pundits watching a game, you really would want to try to pin something on the guy to make the link between a fabulous performance and result by lower league Bradford City circa 2013 against Villa and the dreadful fire of May 1985. |

I think the problem is Twitter is instant and in general these guys are pretty thick and will continue to suffer Foot in Mouth Disease because they put no thought into what they type.
Of course Owen did not mean what he wrote in that context, but I doubt a professional commentator would have made the same remark knowing the history. |

Professional commentators are renowned for their goofs. The phrase 'on fire' is a common footballing term which could easily have been said by anyone. It's only an offence if someone try's to make it one. |
