Is Messi the Greatest of all time or is he an outstanding footballer in the right team to showcase his talent?

I think he could perform anywhere, every footballer takes a while to settle into a new team but I think he's quality.

Settle into a new team? He's been at Barca since he was 11!

As for greatest of all time, I'm not so sure. He's consistently good for sure, but he's not done it on the world stage yet. When/if he wins a couple of world cups with Argentina then I think he could have a legit claim to be the all time best.

Even George Best, considered to be the finest controller of the ball, didn't make it on the world stage as he played for N.I. (silly bugger), and Cristinao Ronaldo has consistently failed at World Cup level too.

The only person I can think of who is deserving of the accolade of Greatest of All Time is Pele. He did it across 4 world cups, winning 3 of them ('58, '62' and '70). He played in '66 but was hacked out of it by Portugal.

Not sure you can be called the greatest of all time if you haven't won a World Cup medal.

Just look at the amazing footballers who never won: Ferenc Puskás, Eusébio, Johan Cruyff - I reckon those three would have a shout if they had won more.

As it stands Messi is IMO the most naturally gifted player there's ever been but can't be the greatest footballer... yet. Pelé and that cheating carnt Marradonna are 'greater'.

That's what I just said but with more finesse. Ner.

So if you guys are right, because he hasn't won the world cup ( yet ) he is not the greatest player. Hummmm

Let imagine one minute that England win the world cup, even in our dream, and Rooney was the leading scorer, would that make him the greatest footballer??? Certainly NOT. Messi is just the greatest. If the boy was born at the time of Pélé, with his gift he would score more than Pélé did. The day he decide to score goals with his hand , like Diego, Argentina will beat every team they play.

My personal opinion is that both Messi & Ronaldo are playing in a two team league at the moment. I regard La Liga in much the same vein as the Scottish PL when it was a straight fight between Celtic & Rangers every year. Even Fifa have named a recent Best XI team featuring only players currently playing in Spain, which is not an accurate reflection of who is the best players in the world at the moment. On current form, Van Persie should feature in that team, alongside Ibrahimovic of Sweden. So is it subjective to say who is the all time greatest? Pele played at a time when ball & boot technology was not as enhanced as it is today, yet he still won three world cups, and Messi, with the best boots money can buy, and current up to date ball technology, hasn't won any.

Barca have valued him at £250m so I don't think he'll be going anywhere soon.

I agree. He isn't worth £250m but that price tag prices him out of the transfer market. He'll leave Barca one day but he'll probably do it on a deal where he'll get the signing fee, Barca get a token payment of £20m and the total package worth in the £60-£70m region. That makes him affordable to a club he might want to join.

Or he could refuse to sign a new contract and go on a free when his current deal expires.

I don't think you need to win a world cup to be the greatest surely winning the baloon d'or a record x4 makes up for that?

George Best and George Weah never had a hope of winning a world cup but were recognised at one time as being the best of their era at least.

If he stays injury free Messi has got another

2/3 attempts at winning the world Cup.

He needs a new tailor though that suit was shocking.

In Your Bush

You can't rate an individual player on the rest of his squad. Which is basically what you seem to be saying. A World Cup winning side is dependant on more than the skills of one player.

Otherwise my vote goes to Hamish McFurby from Auchtermuchty

I couldn't agree more! The Ballon d'Or is the annual prize awarded for the best individual considered to have performed in the previous season, NOT the best annual team award. Like mentioned in previous posts, many players have been regarded the best player of their time or era like Platini, van Basten, Best, Cruyff, Eusébio, Di Stefano, Beckenbauer ... the list goes on.

Like you also quite rightly pointed out, that suit was totally horrific
