Car insurance price increase

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

For the last few years I've noticed a small increase in my car insurance price, but this year it increased by around £100 and my friend had around the same price increase for his.

Nothing changed and the vehicles are the same, so why such a big increase this time. Has this happened to anyone else ?

I think with everything it's just going up and up, I assume you have done a price comparison?

They can name their price and there's nothing anyone can do only haggle , they put it in so that they can take it off and the client then thinks they are after getting a bargain.

I always shop around for mine, change to whoever is cheapest. I'm not fussy about the service though, which might be different for you. Apparently it does make a difference when you get a quote, leaving it close to your renewal date pushes the price up. The money saving expert site has a tool for showing you the best date to get a quote.

I don’t have it the uk this year but I find it completely random , I can go compare and get from 1000 through to 250 for the exact same cover. Same with ReduceMyExcess, anything from 50 to 500 a year.

Live in Scotland Play in England

Motor insurers have lost a few billion through higher cost of claims resulting from car parts having become far more expensive.

So insurance costs are going to go up for most.

Money saving expert recommends checking to see if taking out a new policy now and cancelling an existing one (taking into account entitlement to pro-rata refund plus admin charge) would help avoid the hike that is coming

I haven't yet. I phoned them and they said without me having a quote for them to beat they couldn't give me a better price.. but why can't they just give me their best price ! It just feels like a con.

My insurance went up by £150 so I went through my renewal notice with a fine tooth comb, In addition to my usage of Social,Domestic and Pleasure they had added Commuting. When I brought it to their attention that I was an 83 yr old guy who stopped commuting 13 years ago the £150 increase somehow disappeared and my premium is now the same as last year.

Genuine mistake or a Con I will never know.

Mine went up from £28 per month to £38 per month so whilst it’s gone up a bit it’s still affordable, thankfully.

Anyone providing a service who can get away with maintaining their own standard of living is going to do so.

Particularly if the service has an element of ransom surrounding it.

Absolutely this, but also think about how many fraudulent claims have been going through in the last few years. Also take into account their recovery from covid and the high cost of doing business these days (corporation tax has just gone up 6%), energy etc.

Mine went up £90 last year, checked on a comparison site and cheapest was £120 less than my own insurance company quote. Rang my company and they matched the other price to keep my custom.

It's worth checking quotes and ringing round.

This is what I hate about insurance companies. They won't give a better price until they know you have been offered better.

If they wanted they could of offered you a better price from the start. Robbing bastards.

What made me laugh was that the company who I had a vehicle insured with, which I have just sold, gave me a lousy quote to insure my newer main vehicle when I bought it in October.

I happened to mention this when they PHONED me last week to ask why I hadn't renewed. Subsequently they WROTE to me saying that I would have got a better quote if I had called them on the LANDLINE number instead of via a comparison site.

You have to laugh about the alleged benefit of doing it all on line!

Apologies for shouty capitals. It would be nice if this dialogue box could accept italics.

If my renewal price goes up a lot i use a comparison site to get a quote. Then phone up my insurance and tell them to match it or ill cancel.

Sometimes they can others they cant. Just switch insurers. It doesnt pay to be loyal nowadays.

Ive also found they find a reason to charge around £60 if you ring them for any other reason than to cancel. So when renewal time comes choose the cancel option not the renewal option.

Corporation Tax is going up from 19% to 25% in April. So companies are raising their prices to just stand still.

.

I therefore need a 6% pay rise to maintain my own status quo, or I'll be worse off. Which I know I won't get. So I'll reduce my spending on social fripperies and other such nonsense.

.

You can shop online (been doing it since March 2020 and not been in a shop since). You can cut out takeaways, cinema, and other non-essentials. You can strengthen and build on online life. (Eventually we will nearly all live and work in the Meta anyway).

.

I'm not saying it is for everyone of course, but it is entirely possible to live a digital existence and have no need for shops and most outside services (apart from your Doc...but I do that online too), your plumber (ok you got me there, still need a plumber to come round but if it's not too difficult /dangerous there are usually YT Vids).

If you have the will and the way, you could end a lot of external dependence (and hence cost) on external providers for a lot of things.

.

Perhaps there should be a new term..."Digital Crofter"

Still have to pay for insurance.. And what a boring life it would be if there were no shops around. Our high streets are becoming ghost towns, and little villages have nothing anymore.

Had the same insurance company the last 5 years, always come in cheaper or thereabouts with others so not worth changing. This year they almost doubled the cost, nothings changed on our two car policy only both cars are a year older, so it was goodbye to them as we found like for like cover only fractionally over last years price.

It's probably best left for another thread as it's derailing, but there was a time when shops were necessary and relevant. There was no other alternative. You were limited to what the local store provided at whatever mark-up they decided. The lack of choice and easily available alternatives worked in the seller's favour, let's be honest.

Customers are now more mobile with transport options, and if they don't want to visit a bricks and mortar store, chances are someone has an online presence and can ship to their home instead. A wider, more assessible, flexible and extensive market with ideally same day or next day delivery delivery is geared and aligned for our 24/7/365 lifestyle. Perhaps not everyone's, but more than most. This is of course assuming all businesses can absorb the 6% rise in Corp Tax in April 2023. Agile and adaptable ones will.

I wonder how many folks were consulted on whether there should be a Corp Tax rise ? I can't remember being asked, can you ?

How much profit does a small independent business need to earn before they need to pay corporation tax ?

"How much profit does a small independent business need to earn before they need to pay corporation tax ?"

A small independent business would need to earn profits exceeding £250,000 to pay the 25% rate of Corp Tax.

The thing to bear in mind is that all the insurers mentioned on this thread are large companies, so they naturally fall in to this rate increase.

It's all well and good bashing the insurers for the hike in policies. However they are not the ones who raised Corp Tax are they ?

They are the ones who raised my insurance by £100 pounds. You can go on about corporation tax all you want, but a 6% rise on earners who make over two hundred and fifty thousand pounds a year profit,

doesn't justify such increases.

Insurance quotes depend on so many factors including where you leave, how much excess you are willing to pay and most importantly when you request a quote. I had my cover now with the same company for last 3 or 4 years even though the renewal quote is alqays higher than others on comparison sites(including direct ones). However, they have every year brought it down close to the others so no need to change. Sneakily though this year quoted the same but had increased the excess which I nearly missed noticing. I called them back and they rectified it. You also get a further discount if you have the home insurance with them too.

Taking all this into account is fine but they don't give their best prices on renewal quotes.

Why should I have to ring my insurance company to get a better price every year and barter with them, as soon as I say I'm moving elsewhere they will normally drop the price.

Why not just give me their lowest price in the first place? It's all just a con.

I definitely agree with you that we shouldn't have to do it but ... The sad thing is that it also depends who you get to speak to. I refused to speak to someone recently that found unwilling to help, told him so and called back later and spoke to someone else who was happy to negotiate a price I was happy with. As I said I rather I didn't have to but they seem to have the upper hand

Always renew on the phone, argue your case, use comparison site to get ammunition.

If you are the only person on the policy, add someone, it is ALWAYS cheaper with two.

I don't have a lot of choice. My car has been "modified". It's had a disability modification to the clutch to make it hand operated and a hoist added in the boot. This means pretty much every single high street insurer treats me the same as those who've modded a car to have a fat exhaust system, souped up etc etc. My mods make zero difference to the drive and performance, other than changing gear with my middle finger. So, I use a disability-specific insurer, which is more reasonable. But there's not much competition. Mine's up to renew in May, and we've moved house, so I shall see.......

Comparison sites are pointless for me.

I will, but when I acquired my disability, I couldn't afford a decent automatic estate car (I need the boot space for my wheelchair). Adapting my manual car was the most cost effective solution. But mainstream insurers either can't comprehend an adapted clutch or don't care and treat it like a performance enhancing change. It's still only 105bhp

I know that new customers can't be offered a better deal that existing customers.

I had a change to my policy for a month, it was about £5 but that is more or less what they took off when I phoned.
