It's easy to remember:
Words spelt ie are pronounced 'eye-ye' as in 'science'.
Words spelt ei are pronounced 'ee' as in 'receipt' where the 'i' is silent. |

If there are 940 exceptions, which do we learn? The exceptions to the rule or those that follow the rules?
