"I before E, except after C, it's pure science "

Their, received, receipt etc, etc, etc,

Don't know what the rule is and don't really care if I do I before E when I should have done E before I.

I remember I before E, except after C, or before G. Unless you're writing the word "Weird", because it is written weirdly.

It's easy to remember:

Words spelt ie are pronounced 'eye-ye' as in 'science'.

Words spelt ei are pronounced 'ee' as in 'receipt' where the 'i' is silent.

"I got it from Stephen Fry "

ISTR he said there were something like 940 exceptions.

No, because the 'i' and 'e' would both have to come after the 'c' for the 'rule' to be in force.

OOOh look at all the sharp pencils in this box this morning (I'm only jealous hehe)

If there are 940 exceptions, which do we learn? The exceptions to the rule or those that follow the rules?

It is little wonder that people say English is the hardest language to learn?
