Where does the North of England officially start
Jump to: Newest in thread
"Stafford. Got to be. It seems to be roughly where the midlands (where people talk a little bit funny) becomes the place where people start talking way more funny. Once you hit Manchester, oooff."
A good two hours drive north to the border though!
Northwest at best fettler! |

Not all that North of North London |
When om heading north on the M1, I think not in the North once I get to the A50 junction. That's roughly the point they start calling bread rolls all manner of weird things and calling you duck when you speak to them |

NW London |
Anywhere north of Nottingham is The North.
Between Stevenage and Nottingham is officially the Midlands.
Wales and Scotland are different planets entirely.
London is the centre of the universe. |

"Shap! Bloomin auto correct!
Where’s Shap? To a lot of people it’s anywhere north of Birmingham. "
Jcn39 off the M6.
Shap was formed when the two hamlets of Shit and Crap grew in to one another.... |

I’m Dosertonian born and bred. For me anything the other side of the M4 is north and anything inside the m25 is London. It’s worked well for me so far lol |

"Carlisle, but I'm working down rather than up.
This is true. Between the borders and Carlisle is some sort of weird limbo area." It's furthest North before Scotland actually! We are proper northern. |

GONE/TIMEOUT (No DMs please) |
would roughly use the M62 for my line but dip round sheffield
Strangely wouldn't think of a Scouser as a Northerner.
I think of it more like Lancs, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Etc
(I'm in mid Wales) |

Well if you try to figure it out using Fab geography it apears to be just above Sheffield. Probably Barnsley. Mind according to Fab, East Midlands goes from Chelmsford to South Yorkshire... Go figure. |

Lifes departure lounge NN9 Northamptonshire East not West MidlandsMidlands |
Watford Gap Services on the basis of the first section of the M1 finishing a couple of miles past them.
The Motorway workforce were told that is as far North as we are going. |

I agree, this is proper north. All other places are just wannabe north. |

According to Mark & Lard when they used to be on Radio 1 it was the Bureau de Change at Watford Gap services.
They used to exchange their tenners into That London Village fivers.

I grew up in the Midlands and always thought that Sheffield was in the north.
Then I moved to Teesside and think a line across the country following Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk is a pretty good marker. |

When I worked as a Civil Servant they - 'officially' - took a red marker pen and drew a horizontal line across the UK from east to west bisecting the very southern tip of Sheffield.
Anything above that red line is "oop norf" |

You're all looking at this from the wrong direction.
When you cross the border from Scotland the north of England starts.
Where it ends is the real question. |

"I thought it started at the Watford Gap!?
That's right"
Not right. Watford is the centre of the donut shaped universe. There is no north from Watford. The gap is in fact the hole in the universe donut. |
