Not regularly as my sauna doesn’t have one but I’ve enjoyed it in the past at saunas and wild swimming in winter.
I think post long runs there are benefits for recovery with ice baths but you can get the same benefits using a cold shower on your legs.
Other health and well-being benefits are mostly anecdotal but the feeling of freezing cold water on your body in the hours and days that follows is very real to me, your skin burns initially and then feels warm & glows for a day or two, you feel full of energy and more alive |

For long enough I always sided with heat and warmth but then got persuaded to do a Wim Hoff (The Ice Man) day where we worked on breathing techniques and then finished with an Ice bath. The breathing was excellent but was still apprehensive about the ice bath especially after we loaded it with several bags of ice into what was already cold water. The ice took the temp down to around 1c. Getting in was the first challenge, then followed by getting the breathing under control (blow out the candle). After that it was becoming comfortable and I managed to stay in for several minutes. The biggest bit for me was after getting out...I felt amazing for a good few hours after, a proper buzz lol
After this I started finishing my morning showers with a minute or 2 of cold water and have also bought my own cold water therapy tub and now use for a couple of minutes every few days in the back garden. The water generally is around 5c. As the weather is warming (??) I find myself sitting in the tub facing the sun and enjoying the warmth on my face as I chill the rest of me lol. After getting out I do a warming move in the sun for several minutes.
I find my mood has improved hugely and feel less stressed and also find that my aging aches and pains are less too (could been the mind though). Im going to keep going with it and see how I get on. |

Does it get easier ? I only wild swim maybe 2-3 times a year in winter , so cold showers are how I get it mostly before/after sauna and steam , but it isn’t getting easier |

I've not yet done full Wim Hof with an ice bath but, one thing i do is put my hands in a bowl of ice water for 2 minutes.
My hands used to get cold in the winter & this has really reset & improved the circulation. |

I certainly find that it gets easier. The hardest bit was telling myself to get in the water in the first place. Now I just set the timer and climb straight in, get settled, control the breathing and relax until the timer goes. The cold shower side has become almost habit now and feel that my daily shower isn't done until I've done the cold bit. I started with 1min a day under the cold shower, gradually turning it colder as I went.
If anyone is looking for a read on the benefits (outwith the internet) then check out 'The Cold Therapy Code'. |
