Unless we really are good mates I don't like to be referred to as one. I always think it's a bit of a "blokey" word.

Chill out mate, we love it round these parts!

Literally, all of my close friends would say it. I wouldn't use it professionally or to a woman (unless she was a really good friend). It goes:

"You alright mate?"

"Alright maaate, how are you?"

"yeah good mate, good"

What more do you need?

It is situational

If for example it was someone serving me in a store, I would think it a bit too familiar.

It also grates me a bit in personal messages.

However, someone called it me on Saturday and I wasn't bothered in the slightest.

The fact that at the time he was saying 'alright mate' he was lowering his towel to reveal a somewhat impressive cock may, of course, have had something to do with this

I use it all the time. I didn't, until I joined the army.

Don't mind mate, though I see it more of a blokes word.

Hate being called 'babe' or 'hun'.

Was very disconcerting moving to Devon and being addressed as "my lover" by my neighbour....and that was before I joined fabs!

Don't mind being called 'mate' by a close friend..... But from strangers, especially shop assistants....Arrrrhh. I always reply with' sorry, do I know you, did we go to school together?... LOL

Not my favourite word, but less objectionable than the use of "babes" or "hun" which for some reason drives me mental.

It's useful for if you don't remember someone's name or you're at work tired and can't be bothered recalling people's names when they talk to you so they all become 'mate'.
