"Come On Eileen. Dexys made much better songs than that dirge but it’s still played now 40 years later."

Kevin Roland said that on a documentary about the band. They are reluctant to play Eileen or Geno live as they came from points in their history where the label insisted on putting them out against their wishes.

Iirc they tend to create an album-esk type of show with a narrative in recent years. And put on a show of good songs rather than the hits.

You've hit on the head, no denying their influence but could you listen to 'she loves you, yeah yeah yeah'. It hasn't stood the test of time. A pop band, nothing more. Think of the bands of same era.

Beach Boys

Stones.

Who

Eagles,

Thin lizzy

Lynyrd skynyrd

Need i go on.

Ok I'm biased towards rock, not pop.

In fact, a lot of beatles music is no better and sometimes inferior to the other bands at same time.

Freddy and the dreamers

The tremeloes

Kinks

Hollies and so many more.

If you grew up on radio 1 and totp fodder and think Elton John is rock, you need out more. The Tube, No Limits, ogwt, In concert, Bob Harris and Johnny walker (obligatory to listen to) where the influences back in the day and thankfully Harris and walker still going strong.

Bit of a Floyd fan but will be the first to admit they have done some stinkers...prime example would be the entire Final Cut album...a prime example of how naff Waters is when he thought he WAS Floyd...proven by the dirge that is his entire solo releases compared with the breath of fresh air Momentary Lapse was once he buggered off.

Of course before any Waters fans start throwing rocks at me..it's just my personal opinion

Oh I would definitely put A Day In The Life right up there with the best.

Forget The Beatles popy hits and look for the later album stuff, that’s some good music.

Like any band, they did their share of populist commercial crap.

Away for Christmas

For me it sort of depends what the song is trying to say. The emotions it's putting forward.

What are the lyrics saying. There are some really powerful lyrics mixed up in mediocre packages. And some super catchy songs and ear worms that are just enjoyable noise but they don't make me feel anything.

I'm not a massive Ed Sheeran fan but 2 of his songs have a special place for me - Photograph and Castle on the Hill. Alone they are nothing special but their meaning within lyrics elevate those songs to something that I could never class as overrated. Ever.

Plenty of other songs out there that get looked down on which are mediocre as music but go beyond being just that.

Massive hit by someone who I think sounds like someone taking the mick out of a real singer.

I agree with you. People should look at the positives in everything. I don't generally like these threads. Because they just attract negativity about something or someone.

I mean who am I to trash someone or something, unless I think I can do that better myself. Same as armchair football managers, thinking they are the oracle on the subject. Well your not, if you were you would be in the football industry or music industry.

I done my duty and took my ex to an Adele concert. She loved it, I detested it. I'm a rocker and I like my gigs to produce energy in the audience. What Adele provoked in the crowd was a gentle sway. Like a funeral without a body, pure shinola.

I think the issue with some of the songs noted above are that they become inescapable. When you are shopping you hear them, in doctor's offices, on hold on the phone. What may start out as a fairly innocuous track that just isn't your cuppa after months/years of being aurally assaulted by it can become a focal point of intense hatred. Purely on an individual level mind. I'm well aware others do not have the averse reactions I do to particular tracks and nor should they.

As you can see by a large number of the replies most songs people mention are not songs they feel are just okay but get great praise but songs they clearly dislike. So it pretty much is about like and dislike by this point.
