Every now and then something pops up on my phone and it shows me everywhere I've visited. Most of the time my location hasn't been turned on.

Yes, its invaluable for me when I need to remember what the hell I did with my working week (travel distances, location of meetings, etc).

Then again, much of the time in the week seems to be spent on the Forum.

Your phone is probably trying to use its GPS to work out your location… you can turn off location services on an iPhone

Worth your while doing if only because you save battery life..

On a similar thread, the other day I was typing a PM on here using the Firefox browser and I mentioned the Northern Lights in it. Later that day my Google recommended news feed had two articles about the Northern Lights in it. I had not mentioned then in any other form of correspondence or search that day. Really freaked me out about what my phone was tracking.

Now my phone is asking me about it .

Like I said in a previous thread you literally won't be able to use the toilet without someone knowing about it.

So if I buy a second hand phone and stick a pay as you go sim in it. How are the police going to track my phone..? They may find my number its the evidence to tie me up with this number and phone thats the problem.

The answer to the op is yes

All smart phones track you regardless of gps or google maps or any other apps being turned off

Analog phones such as Nokia 3310 pings of closest mast so still traceable

Yes it is listening to your conversations too

As well as your smart tv Alexa video door bells cars etc…..

all messages are screened also for key words

And it’s all legitimately done under the terrorist act headed up by gchq mi6 and the people we don’t evan know about !

But the likes of Alexa and smart tvs is more for sales such as Amazon and google which I don’t agree with

I doubt turning off would shut these functions down!

Remember at the beginning of covid when everyone phones got uploaded with the covid track and trace app !? That was almost impossible to turn off and delete

Well that’s how easily the powers that are trace you !

Technology is way more advanced than any of us are even slightly aware of

We were warned about this 40+years ago on tomorrow’s world

Did you see the report last week about how French criminals had got hold of the equipment that the police use for this and had got info off nearly half a million phones? They only caught them due to a driving offence, so it's probably pretty common & UK criminals are doing it too.

Years ago I had a really horrendous experience that convinced me never to carry a phone with me ever again: now I only ever make and receive messages by e-mail.

I work on the principle the urgent (phone call) is rarely ever important; and the important (call) is rarely ever urgent.

My phone always remains at my home, and my work goes uninterrupted. There is therefore nothing to track

My understanding of a 'burner phone' is that it is a 'pay as you go' phone, that is purchased for cash, with no details of ownership being recorded, top-ups are also cash, and after a period the phone is deliberately destroyed irretrievably.

The process is repeated with the next phone.

Burner phones are usually the most basic type with no internet access, and can receive voice calls and text messages.

However, sophisticated and highly organised crims use encrypted phones that are extremely expensive, but French security services cracked these years ago and were able to read the encrypted messages and track the criminals.

If I am wrong about the burner phones, apologies.

If nothing else it gives conspiracy theorists something to talk to other conspiracy theorists about.

It's like an adult version of Chinese Whispers, stories get skewed, over exaggerated, or just plain lied about.

It’s got the point now where as much as I don’t like it, I’m accepting that it’s happening all the time.

Where I’m going, what I’m looking at. It’s all getting stored away somewhere for advertising or whatever.

It’s only if I really do t want someone knowing what I’m doing for whatever reason that I’ll turn my phone off, pay in cash, turn off cookies or use incognito or something.

Newry Down

Prior to the advent of the internet and the ubiquity of personal computers and smartphones and shopping online, I had two adverse experiences which 'marked' me; this was prior to the concepts of stalking and harassment being put into the public domain.

The two individuals had severe issues, personality disorders, and for a time, in one instance for nearly two years, one of them made my life hell will daily phonecalls to my workplace and my home and stalking me.

Foolishly, I do not get the police involved, but I did approach a person in a position of authority for his assistance, but he told me that the person concerned was doing the same thing to him!

Since that time I have ensured that non-one, not even my employers, had my personal phone number, and I very rarely, if ever, carry a phone with me.

This has its drawbacks, of course. People with a conspiritorial mindset or who have something to hide lambast the tracking features of modern phones.

These do have advantages, but in my case the awful experience over a period of two years, that began innocuously but escalated to an intolerable level very rapidly damaged me.

One perpetrator was relatively easy to get rid of; the other came to a particularly tragic end, by his own hand !

I don't care if it is or not. It's not like I'm doing anything terrible exciting or out of the ordinary so if anyone is watching they must be bored solid by now.

"How do you think the police catch criminals.......

Do they..? The real crimnals use burner phones.

Been watching too many tv dramas, if a phone connects to a mast it’s traceable. We can find out where you’ve been. The days of burners are long gone.

So if I buy a second hand phone and stick a pay as you go sim in it. How are the police going to track my phone..? They may find my number its the evidence to tie me up with this number and phone thats the problem.

Not saying its impossible, but a lot harder than contrast phone's. "

All phones have an imei. If your suspected to be in a location or several locations the imei can be narrowed down with the sim I’d and you too can be narrowed down with it to put you in the vicinity of any enquiry… you would have to change the sim and phone every time you switched it on to make a call. One time use only. Then destroy both as the moment it comes back on the network it’s flagged. There is very clever tech out there and the providers have an onus to assist any ipa requests.

Of course it does, Apple and Google know everything. They know the porn you watch, the sex toys you buy, the clubs you visit and if they track everyone else too they also know who you meet.

But.

They honestly don't care as long as they they can vector an advertisement to you.

"Seriously though if they are tracking us and listening to us, then maybe they are looking through our cams.

Just imagine jerking off whilst watching porn and someone is watching us ."

Of course everyone's phone enables them to be tracked and if required monitored.

Frankly, what I do with my life is so inconsequential and irrelevant, that no-one would be in the least bit interested in what I do.

On a daily basis, I ensure that I am the archetypal Grey Man in Irish society, unnoticed and unrecognised

But, I have a hidden life, an avocation that brings pleasure and meaning into my outwardly boring modus vivendi.
