World Book Day this week

That bloody day sneaks up on me every year. The school is allowing them to just come in wearing pyjamas this year, but no, the little sods want to dress up. They'll probably want to decorate a potato as well knowing my luck.

So far one wants to go as Percy Jackson, the other as Roald Dahl's Matilda. The youngest hasn't decided yet. I guess I'll be making a lightning bolt this week

Are you having to suffer this? Do you enjoy it? Do you buy costumes? I just make do with things we have in the house. Got any good anecdotes?

My favourite was 3 years back when my eldest decided to go as Julian from The Famous Five. I dressed him in a check shirt and told him to keep a smug smile of white male privilege on his face all day

Percy Jackson is so cool! I hope you've managed to craft/source a lightening bolt - and you're not just remembering it's today, today.

Same way you make one for a girl. They look bloody stupid either way. Stop worrying about it and just let them enjoy wearing a daft hat.

Pyjamas and a “virtual fire” on the electronic whiteboard to “snuggle up” and read around. I suspect the teachers are fed up with it too!

Don't worry, I'm not too panicked really. I cut a lightning bolt out of cardboard last night and they painted it gold and black.

Oh and youngest is going as the tiger who came to tea. I've found some vaguely orange clothes and he has a tiger coat

Ahhhhh, I feel your pain. I'm so pleased I'm past that stage in life. That last minute stress of trying to think of something.

I do however miss my children being small and cute.

We had that option too. I was really happy until the kids said they wanted to dress up. But they have picked characters we can easily dress up as from normal clothes. Plus it feels like we're actually getting into the spirit of it for the books. They've picked characters they love

I am wearing a dalmatian onesie today. I was going to be a Ladybird from What the Ladybird Heard as my Toddlers at work love that book but left it too order.

Dalmatian is cosy though

Ours went as Harry Potter (slight gender transition for the day), in an outfit scavenged from her cousins. World Book Day - complete!

My son went to school as the lead character in Jill Murphy's "The Boy Who Wore His School Uniform"

Not as well known as her other books.

Our eldest insisted on being Taylor TurboChaser - a car. Fortunately or unfortunately, the teachers’ strike gave us a whole day to work on it. It’s pretty good, but he thinks it’s not good enough and has gone to bed crying.

I love walking around the Supermarket after World Book Day at School, the teachers are instantly recognised today in Morrisons I saw Where's Wally, Mary Poppins, Spiderman and there was me, Dalmatian. We crossed paths and gave each other subtle nods and sly smiles
