How important is your sofa?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Let me explain my question.
Is it the most important piece of furniture in your house?
Or are you like meh!
A comfy nice looking sofa is very important in our minds.
The main reason for the question is,we purchased a new one just over two years ago and we never liked it from day one despite trying many sofa's we thought this was the one.
We should have complained about it but lockdown, covid plus other more important things happened at the time.
But we feel really guilty and kinda spoilt to be looking for a new one so soon considering our previous one lasted 17 years.
There's a thousand other things that we could be spending the money on but I guess there's always something that needs doing. |

You could always donate your old sofa to a charities furniture section (they should collect it) if you were so inclined.
It’s very important to me, apart from my bed it is the place I spend the most time when I’m home.
Don’t feel guilty. |

For me, absolutely unimportant.
My bed and my computer chair are the pieces of furniture I need to be right. The sofa is just somewhere for the dogs to sit or somewhere to tolerate other people in my space. |

If you can afford to buy a new sofa then do it! I think it's a very important part of your home.
I live with my parents in law, so I obviously didn't pick the sofa. But fuck me up the asshole, it's so fucking uncomfortable. I do not enjoy any moment when I'm sat on it. And if I ever wanted a nap on it, there isn't a possibility it would ever happen. And being able to sleep on my sofa is a must for me.
Treat yourself Jools. |

My sofa is like my best friend. It knows me intimately and has shared many fond memories. I’ve bent ladies over him, had ladies sprawled all over him, laid back and had blow jobs on him, crashed out exhausted, watched great film and slept soundly on him…..yep me and my sofa are mates |

It's absolutely a necessity to have a very comfortable sofa. Our first one lasted 17 years and we needed to replace it. We searched and searched, and sat on so many. We ended up spending much more than we originally budgeted for but we fell in love with an Italian leather sofa. We treated ourselves and figured if it lasts 17 years as the last one did, then it doesn't work out that expensive at all.
Comfort is everything in the home so go on, treat yourselves. |

My sofa is very important. I have two in my living room, excluding the armchair. They take pride of place and are more than just utilitarian; they are functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Without them my living room would be spartan.
My sofa is important because I spend an inordinate amount of time relaxing and resting on it. |

Without television a sofa has no importance in my house.
I still have a classic Chesterfield, moved from the living room to the conservatory, mainly because it fills the space well but it has things piled on it most of the time.
Where the sofa used to be I now have a single divan storage bed. It is nice and firm to lie down or sit on. Great for cat naps and longer snoozes. It was as new and cost me nothing like as much as sofa would.
Most sofas are grossly over priced, based on their relevance to the great TV watching public.
I always eat and work seated or sitting (as a pedant I don't do 'sat') at a proper table or desk. I abhor eating off a tray or lap and my dining table is where I also have a couple of 'laptop' computers. So called desk top, but really underdesk, computers have their own desks or associated work benches in other parts of the house.
Like another poster, above, I prefer swivel chairs and I have simple armchairs (with nearby drinks tables) for guests who come round for a chat. Very occasionally will sit in one myself. Longer term entertaining is done in bed. The only sizeable screen for watching occasional media is, therefore, in my main bedroom.
The rear interior of my Japanese day van is effectively an L shaped sofa bed (with storage beneath it. The factory fitted telly which, luckily, doesn't work in this country is in the dashboard!
I'm more than happy with this 'so far' independent lifestyle. Only the most determined home makers have ever tried to share it! |

Our sofa is 3rd or 4th hand. Gave a friend £50 for the sofa + 2 armchairs about 6/7yrs ago. It's proper leather and very well made. We can't justify getting rid of it because it's still in excellent condition, despite originally having come to our friend for their first house, via their parent's friends! We might treat ourselves to a new suite for our new living room, but the current one will go into the conservatory. If we can't find something we like for the living room, then it stays and we'll furnish the conservatory separately. It's unlikely we'll buy brand new either, because it's so expensive and quality seems terrible. We bought DFS sofas before we had the leather ones and they lasted only 3-4yrs before they were broken.
If you can afford new ones, go for it, but be warned about the quality of new furniture. What we've seen in the usual high street stores doesn't inspire us at all. |

My next one will probably be very comfortable and very ugly.
The two I have now are no good for my arthritis so I sit in a chair most of the time; which isn't very comfortable either.
My daughter's both have new style sofas and they are not comfortable for me to sit on, so I'll probably have to choose comfort over aesthetics.
I'll also get a recliner chair for myself. |

I'm sitting in my Grandad's rocking chair nowadays It's an actual antique, having originated from my Great Great Grandfather's shop!
I'm tempted by a recliner but they're so expensive! |

I'm using my mum's bamboo conservatory chair. It's higher than my sofas and easier to get up from.
I've seen recliners ranging from £300 to over £1000.

With you on this, OP.
During covid I bought a new sofa when I got my new flat. Sat on it briefly in the shop between lockdowns, but not properly. From day one I hated it and do not enjoy sitting in it. The cushions aren’t firm enough, they move around and I don’t even like how it looks!
It’s definitely the most important piece of furniture in my place. Clearly a bed is important for a good night’s sleep, but at 46 years old I know what kind of mattress I need and aesthetics are probably less of a variable than a sofa.
I am now about to sell my new sofa and buy another. It feels so wasteful, but I need something comfortable to veg on at the end of a day at work. And it’s a central part of entertaining. |

Bought mine a couple of years too but have sat on the sofa maybe a handful of times, but not for any length of time, usually visitors sit on it, or the cats. I sit on my chair. I have difficulty rising up from it and when I bought it I had the option of feather cushions or foam. I took feathers. Stupid me. Just last week I bought a slab of foam 3” thick, cut it to size, now my chair is comfy again and the extra 3” provide support and extra height. Other than that I like it. Also bought ‘sliders’ for the feet so I could push it around easily - not a chance, I must be weaker than I thought, but having said that, my home help can’t even push it around easily
Why don’t you like your sofa OP? Does it not give enough support? That’s easily changed by way of some foam under the cushions or other support giving material |

We just spent £2500 on two new sofas and can't wait untill they are delivered I. Appx 8 weeks.
However we made the mistake of binning the last ones too soon and now have nothing to sit on.imd you it will make decorative living room easier |
