Seems to be becoming more common.. Or just more in the press...

Why don't all women dry their hands on their penis?

It’s not a group project.

Some people have never used a unisex toilet in a nightclub and it shows.

Am I the only person that finds it funny that the councillor represents Cockfosters?

I truly don't know what to make of that situation. Could the woman who made the remark have been making a joke which was wide of the mark? If she immediately left the cloakroom why did the councillor feel threatened?

I don't know and I'm jolly glad I haven't got to make rulings on this

We only have the councillor's information. What if they were being rude to the woman and inferring she shouldn't be in there? Perhaps that's why she made the penis comment.

Women have the right to safe spaces. I'm shocked that some people think they shouldn't, but even more so that some women also think this. The Equality Act 2010 says someone sexually harasses another person if the conduct has the purpose or effect of either violating the other person’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them.

Had it happened to me, I would have reported the penis owner to the police.

This came across as a rubbish transphobic councillor who somehow thinks she's an LGBT ally and who had an intimidating experience.

She's not, and she didn't.

The councillor was clearly the intimidator and making the other woman feel uncomfortable enough that she decided to make an assertive and acerbic joke as she left;

Fuck you councillor! Gonna wipe my hands on my dick. Byeeeee

Leave me the fuck alone when we share toilet facilities, whether I'm trans or not, and it's not up to you to judge and guess my gender.

If I'm in this toilet then that is where I belong.

Don't talk to me out of fear and discomfort while othering and judging me the entire time and testing me as a novelty and story to tell the girls back at the table over your aperol spritz.

Do all tall women or masc women get conservative ass holes not let them wash their hands without talking incessantly about soap and hand towels.

To judge the reaction to this incident, you first have to look at the political party of the victim in question.

Now imagine that victim was in a different party and imagine the reaction

Can anyone explain how "I'm gonna dry my hands on my penis" is a threat.

Especially by someone leaving.

I can't see it tbh. Let alone it be do clear cut there is no doubt.

I also wonder how well she was doing if she's thinking "This is going well, I’m handling the situation fine".

Unless she thinks that in every conversation she has.

Threats aren't always physical - in this case it was psychological. In short, if the councillor felt threatened, it was a threat. That's for her to decide, not a man.

I've not read it, I'm likely not going to read it.

But there is a much greater chance that a trans woman will be more at risk of any kind of harm in a men's toilet than women will be with a trans woman in theirs.

Wirral.

I've no problem with anyone using the ladies, I've used many a men's loo in my time due to long queues!

But sexual jokes/comments should only ever be made when you're absolutely certain of your audience.

Most strangers in real life aren't as as blasé about dicks as us Fabbers. If a man/TV/trans person I didn't know made such a comment to me whilst in the bathroom, I'd feel uncomfortable too. Heck, possibly even if I knew them.

This. It was in a public toilet. Anyone could have been in there including children. And people wonder why we don't want to let our kids unsupervised in the male loos, let alone now having to worry about the ladies as well

Yes she may have felt uncomfortable with the lady being "starstruck" with her, but there was no need to make a reference to genitalia.

A public toilet should be a safe place just like any other public place should be, but I wish the media and others would stop defining gender-specific toilets as "safe spaces". That term originated from the LGBT communities in universities to define places where those people were free from bias and harassment. You can't take their term and use it against them.

I think the councillor’s stance is clear from the start: “I can’t deny I was a bit shocked. Yet there was a sense of novelty. What would she be like? Well, we had quite a nice chat, not exactly girlie, but friendly.“

I’m pretty sure she made the trans woman uncomfortable.

"Can anyone explain how "I'm gonna dry my hands on my penis" is a threat.

Bess x

I was under the impression this incident involved two women?

It was a woman and a man. Or a woman and a trans person

So 2 women then???

No. Not 2 women

This is the kind of narrow minded attitude, that makes this a problem in the first place.

No. Its not. Me stating the bleeding obvious isnt the problem. The problem is trying to reorganise society to suit a miniscule minority.

I’m pretty sure she made the trans woman uncomfortable.

By having a friendly chat? "

She was shocked. Sense of novelty. Like seeing a strange animal in a zoo.

She should be allowed to use the ladies lavatory.

And there shouldn't be an issue if she has a penis or not.

I mean we all have them, except women of course, but she is a women, a women who has a penis, so she should be allowed to use the ladies.

Hope that made sense.

I lock my toilet door when I go into the cubicle.

I expect the person on the other side of it to be decent irrespective of their sex.

Really don’t see the big deal of mixed toilets in individual cubicles.

if agree the comment wasnt right.

But that's not really about trans people in bathrooms.

But being able to read the (rest) room.

However we don't really know what the chat was like other than the story tellers view. But imo if you are thinking "This is going well, I’m handling the situation fine" then you are (excuse the pun) leaking.

I'd feel the same of my granddad said "I had a nice chat with a coloured fella today. It went well. I handled the situation fine".

And that's assuming they actually though it. The cynic in me suspects editing.

So about 8yrs ago I was in Norway and went out 1 night. In this pub/nightclub I needed toilet so went as directed. Loads of women in queue so I walked past them (getting hacky looks as I did) but when I got to top of stairs, they told me it was unisex toilets and everyone had to wait in queue regardless...... I didnt see a problem other than I was desperate... It was still seperate cubicles... I think from memory, there was only washing hands where there might be mixed genders there but certainly didn't bother me or anyone else in the queue

To say treat me as a women, then refer to their cock towards other women in a women's toilet smacks of smugness, it says im here and there nothing women can do about it.

Read the article, what we have is a one sided account of an incident.

Were they sure the woman was transgender? If they were, how would they know at what stage of their transition they were at? Perhaps they were Post-Op and didnt have a penis anymore? Maybe they had their GRC? Maybe they weren't trans at all and the situation was completely mis-read?

I agree the joke was in poor taste, if it was even said. But we still live in a society where we are innocent until proven guilty, something that seems to be slowly taken away from the transgender community.

I don't think anyone has a problem with unisex loos. In fact, maybe that would be the answer, going forward?

Bess xI'm trying to understand. Not decide. What's the implication. She can feel threatened while not being threatened.

Do you think a woman should be able to use the toilet without feeling uncomfortable or threatened by someone with a cock sharing the facilities with her and making sure she knows she / they has a cock? "

This is a great statement and one that underlines the actual issue, the person involved was crude and invasive in a room that should be private. It doesn’t matter if the person was male, female, non binary or any other, this person was wrong and out of order.

Just because they are trans, does not give them a get out of jail card, and those of you that are trans should recognise bad behaviour as what it is and not defend it or get drawn into the trans arguments that inevitably rise from these situations, throw them under the bus. Doing that might drive out those who are making it hard for you to be you.

Can we just agree that the actions of one person shouldn’t be used as the basis for an entire debate as to that persons gender identity.

Shitty behaviour is shitty behaviour regardless of who’s making it. I know for a fact that shitty behaviour in a woman’s toilet is not confined to trans women, plenty of cis women have been guilty of this too.

No, nowhere just i say JUST tolerate. Treated like everyone else

That's the problem though. Trans people aren't treated like everyone else. If they were, they're wouldn't be an issue over toilets.

XX

Im sorry but i just dont agree.

Letting a trans person choose the toilet they wish to use isnt treating them like everyone else. Its giving them a privilege BEYOND anyone else

Wouldn't a Trans woman use the female toilets and a trans male use the male toilets

No i dont believe so

What do you believe?

I believe a person should use the toilet of their biological sex

Going on statistics…

Trans women should be more scared of men, than women should be of trans women.

I’d HATE a trans women to feel the need to use a male bathroom.

"It's like biology has never existed

Biologically speaking, research has shown that the brain of a trans person resembles, shares structural and functional similarities to, that of their identified gender.

Is that enough biology for you? "

So if I think I'm a woman, therefore I am a woman,is that what your last comment was saying?

Going to cause massive controversy here but.....

Is it because men 'sometimes' think that if someone is gay/bi/TV/TS/female etc.. Then they are automatically attracted to them and therefore feel threatened that their manhood is under scrutiny?

Or vice versa..

Do woman feel automatically threatened/objectified etc if a 'penis' is in the same bathroom as them?

I'm not stating oppinion or looking for arguments or back lash on this, but just trying to play the middle card and see what people's views are without causing any unnecessary insult or harm to anyone

Absolutely. It’s concerning to that person in that incident.

Because that person is gross. Whatever there sex and gender.

Not sure how it relates to trans people using toilets though. Just feels like it’s an excuse to jump on the band wagon.

Sorry to be so naive but...

Depending on what you need to do, a bloke has urinals and cubicles.

Woman's toilets have only cubicles... Which, sorry for pointing out the obvious, but you can do either or on.

Surely if someone TV/TS etc wants to go in the woman's it's not an issue if their in a cubicle anyway?

To each their own, but I've seen aggression and fights with grown men in men's toilets and fights with grown women in womens toilets... I would expect the TV/TS community to stand n fight between them both...

Safety is surely paramount for everyone, but I'd imagine the safety of the actual TV/TS and what they respectively generalise themselves as, has to be taken into Consideration somewhere?...

We have men's toilets... Womens toilets.... Disabled (unisex) toilets... Baby changing.... Are we now saying we need a Completely seperate option, only for people to disregard it anyway when their pissed?

Come on people

"I think the councillor’s stance is clear from the start: “I can’t deny I was a bit shocked. Yet there was a sense of novelty. What would she be like? Well, we had quite a nice chat, not exactly girlie, but friendly.“

I’m pretty sure she made the trans woman uncomfortable.

By having a friendly chat?

Friendly/girly chats don't make me uncomfortable.

Unwanted references to genitalia do. if agree the comment wasnt right.

Exactly. That was my point

In simple terms, a trans person is someone whose gender identity is different to that which they were assigned/thought to be at birth.

There are educational sources and research papers available online if you want to know more about trans, and the research conducted.

How do you know who’s male or female?

Flip it the other way…. If a male looking person followed women into the womens bathroom it’s likely to cause chaos at worst and rude comments at best.

Trans people literally can’t win.

You’ve no idea what sex someone is so I don’t see how it’s relevant or bothers anyone at all.

"Speaking from experience ,a trans woman using a male loo is a nightmare ,people all have different views ,difficult for them to see the problems for the person using the loo, should a female to male use the mens loo? How would that go?

No they should use the womens

If they did this they would be accused of being a man going into a women's toilet!!

No they wouldnt. Because they are a woman"

Women with beards, deep voices and muscular build. I can see that going down very well in the women's loos at Waitrose.

There are non trans women too who need to "win" and use facilities safely and without feeling threatened.

Some people's opinions are entrenched, no leeway or thought for everyone's feelings no matter what their situation.Tolerance on all sides ,meeting in the middle ,call it what you want. When my female friends ask me to accompany them in the ladies for a natter and catch up should l decline because it might offend someone?

Well when all’s said and done, it’s pretty clear who is on which side of the fence here and that it’s highly unlikely that either will change the other’s point of view.

If nothing else I’ve found it a good filter for knowing who wouldn’t be a suitable match for me and I’m sure it works both ways

All I would say before leaving this thread for good is to never believe anything you read in the press, especially when it’s just the word of one politician (of any party that is )

Genuine question for the men with the issues…

You think born female should use female, born male use male.

Would you be happy with a very obvious, trans man (who looks very masculine but has not had gender surgery) to use a female bathroom? Because in your opinion, they are a biological female?

I feel like you’d all have something to say if you sen someone who looks like a man enter a female bathroom.

Again, genuinely interested.

"Read the article and well, I just feel that a trans woman shouldn't be in the female toilet in the first place "

This is a hard one to put into practice. As most places don't have the room to install separate toilets for non gender/trans people, so it could lead to the building making all toilets unisex.

"Some people's opinions are entrenched, no leeway or thought for everyone's feelings no matter what their situation.Tolerance on all sides ,meeting in the middle ,call it what you want. When my female friends ask me to accompany them in the ladies for a natter and catch up should l decline because it might offend someone?"

Interesting notion.

"Because the grief you get by following your advice is overwhelming, are you saying l should give up my life choice or never go out and socialise in public?. Every one has a choice, maybe you could go to venues that ban trans people, or other groups of individuals that you dont agree with?

Who are you replying to? Please use quote + reply

You

Well that comment makes absolutely no sense at all because nowhere have i suggested you shouldnt go out anywhere or be banned from anywhere or that i didnt want to be around trans people. Youre just seeking out victimhood now

How can l go out and socialise and not use the ladies?

Well i have no idea of your sex, but assuming you are biologically male then can you not use the mens? tried that in the early days ,the abuse ,physical and mental was horrific"

Unacceptable and i hope you report to the premises management

Essex.

Just make all toilets like disabled ones.

Individual cubicle with sink, flat entrance.

Problem solved, everyone can use it.

Because they are a woman

Because generally people going into a gendered toilet expect and wish to only have people of that gender in there.

How would you know that a trans male was in the same toilet as you?

I may not. But it would be my expectation that there isnt

That really doesn't make sense. You are objecting for objecting sake

We're having a discussion. Should i just agree with you so instead? "

Not at all. Would you explain why you it is so important that trans people don't use the toilets of the sex they have transitioned to?

Quite possibly, but you also have to contend with the great unwashed!

And the media are back at it again. After a brief respite of anti trans stories (or outright bullshit in this case I suspect) during the period Brianna Ghey was murdered.

So unisex, like some establishments have already done? Whod’a thunk it could be so simple to solve such a complex problem!

Thing is... Its not the actual bowel opening process... Its the communal hand washing/drying /hair/make up / egress / ingress bit

"Genuine question for the men with the issues…

You think born female should use female, born male use male.

Would you be happy with a very obvious, trans man (who looks very masculine but has not had gender surgery) to use a female bathroom? Because in your opinion, they are a biological female?

I feel like you’d all have something to say if you sen someone who looks like a man enter a female bathroom.

Again, genuinely interested. "

I made this point, it wasn't answered

Because i believe its just as simple as that, you use the facilities of your gender. Opening it up to individual choice is unrealistic

Apart from in some places... Men are disgusting and women don't want to use them after men have wiped it hither and thither.

Exactly. But we don’t segregate the rest of our lives in communal areas.

I think that comment, absolutely validates the point it’s as safe as anything else in life.
