So we used up all of part 1 on the first 2 weekends
Now .. after a weekend of rest… it’s back!
So…. Saturday early… Italy vs Ireland
Saturday late… wales vs England
Sunday afternoon… France vs Scotland
Right… who you got
Ireland……..England…… France
I expect the Ireland and France games to be close for 60… then they pull away
England will absolutely hump the Welsh…. And it’s not going to be funny |

Beware the Welsh team in turmoil.
I can just see the headlines already.
England should have far too much class but it’s wales… away, with a huge point to prove for every Welsh player and supporter.
What could possibly go wrong |

But bad teams in peril don’t just get better overnight … if England start quickly.. that place will turn sharpish |

Still, I’ll save my crowing for the last 20 minutes…
I’ve never been one for taking games for granted.
Let’s hope for three competitive games and some great atmospheres

It's so good seeing Italy really competing, after years of people saying they should be relegated from the competition. I know Ireland are finally getting control but given they're the best team in the world, Italy have done really well. And some cracking bits of open play!

I would argue that Italy had the best autumn series of any of the northern hemisphere teams and they have brought it into the 6 nations….. if I was Italian I would be disappointed if I didn’t beat wales… and you could see them running Scotland close! |

That's because Farrel is not the best kicker, very inconsistent. We gave away less penalties but we shouldn't be missing those opportunities, we played well for moments, but certainly not in the 2nd half.
We are definitely going in the right direction under Borthwick, but nowhere near yet... |

I agree. I think that Borthwick will be good for the team and I like the idea that he is promoting "playing what's in front of you" rather than Eddie's "follow the game plan at all costs" mentality.
Unfortunately though, I don't think that we're in the same class as Ireland or France at the moment... but there's great potential for being in form the World Cup.

I've never really been a massive Farrel fan. He is undoubtedly a great player, but he can sometimes be a bit hot headed and takes too much on for himself. He certainly wouldn't be my first choice as captain.

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
Italy vs Wales - Wales by the smallest of margins, Italy are almost there, but I don't think they have a full 80 mins yet
England vs France - France both teams have tightened up on discipline which used to cost them games, the French especially. Still a few too many handling / breakdown errors from England to hold off a quite clinical French side.
Scotland vs Ireland - Ireland could be the game of the tournament, or Ireland will steamroller the plucky Scots, they look unbeatable at the moment.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Italy turn over Wales. I've been saying for years that Italy should be replaced, but this season they seemed to have had a major resurgence, whilst wales have been awful.

A well deserved win for France, England have just been dismal today. They've a lot to improve on before the Ireland game if they don't want a similar result.
On the other hand, there's plenty of time to improve before the world Cup, and I'm sure they'll be a different side come September.
The "fans" walking out with 10 minutes to go should be ashamed of themselves.

It could be…. But France have New Zealand in their group… and Ireland have South Africa in theirs
If they both win their groups… or come 2nd.. they will avoid each other till the final
If one comes first and the other comes second in their groups.. it will be a quarter final clash!
Weirdly enough because of when the draw was.. England have the easiest route to the semi final… win their group (which has Argentina and Japan in it) and their quarter final would likely be the loser of the Australia vs Wales game! (Although Georgia and Fiji might give wales a game in their group) |

I genuinely wouldn't fancy England's chances against Argentina currently.

I personally find it hard to discount Australia, New Zealand or South Africa when it comes to the world cup. Six months is a long time in sport and more than enough for a team to regain their form... I'd expect England to be in the mix too.

Agree with all of that!
Dombrandt, at Quins fine, but then he's got Care there... JVP seems to be turning into Youngs Mk 2!
I'd rather Willis had stayed on and Ludlum gone to 8.
Itoje needs to go back to his club, done nothing for ages.
Unless Slade was injured, can't help feeling he was made a scapegoat to get Farrell on!

Have to say, I'm a bit disappointed that Ireland had a Try written off, because (let's not beat about the bush) Scotland tried to cheat by taking a fast lineout with a different ball. At worst, the lineout should of been given to Ireland.
Thankfully the better team won in the end of the day to save blushes and controversy from a bad Referring decision. |

Do feel sorry for Stewart getting the red at that point… but you have to play to the whistle and he didn’t and braced himself, whereas Keenan did

The air lift in the first half by Ireland was just a penalty WTF |

Having a player off completely changes the dynamics of a game. I personally don’t think that Ireland are playing badly at all, just that England have done a great job of putting them under pressure.
I do think that without the Red Card, the score would be very close. Ireland are still slightly the better, but England can certainly be proud of our performance |

So was the RED justified.
And was the air lift in the first half by Ireland a yellow not just a penalty looking at the one we have just seen |

But there was also a high tackel on England but the REF did not see it and I guess the TMO did not high light it.

It was the clear-out from the ruck, the initial contact was simultaneous with the ball coming out so they wouldn't have been aware.
To be fair though, the level of discipline was always going to drop with a player down, just because everyone is fighting that much harder.

If it was in the same sequence of play then foul play trumps everything else…
TMO reviews everything in the background.. I thought there were some tackles by England players that could have been called neck rolls that were let go… |

Steward got it wrong, tried to turn away, but failed. However, Keenan also chose to remain upright! I've long said that not enough consideration is given to the actions of the ball carrier. Always going to be a card, just not convinced about the colour.
Hansen had his arms around Watson neck on the line before the second try, plus Van Der Fliers block as the ball went out leading to the try!
No argument about the result, and Ireland deserved the GS for consistency throughout the tournament, but consistency from Peyper/Jonker was somewhat lacking tbf.
From an England perspective, a much better performance finally.
Congratulations Ireland. |

No they won't Farell is not top of the game England need a better 10 and possibly a better 9.
9 / 10 Control the game we don't really even have a grate 8
But time will tell.
At least Farnell kicked better today he misted some poor kicks in the tournament.

As I said, some consistency from the officials would have been nice.
Peyper was fine for the first 30 mins, but then Jonker started in his ear.
At least twice before Steward's card he called Peyper's attention to actions (by England) that were then proven to be nothing!

Fair play to Ireland.
Although I may seem biased England seem to have had a lot of poor refereeing gone against them.
Several in the France game and again today.
Irish players blocking the chasing player from kicks, coming in from the side over and over again, penalised for holding on when an Irish player is clearly preventing the ball coming back and don’t even get me started on the red card.
England have a lot to do. They seem to think they’re much better than they actually are and the effort and desire is lacking all over the park.
Slow to the breakdown, taking the ball at stand still and trying to break the gain line.
Just taking contact and getting nowhere for long periods of time.
No flair or creativity and a complete unwillingness to throw the ball wide and let the danger men have any effect on the game.
That’s why most teams and especially France and Ireland are way ahead of us.
Attitude and creativity.
Ireland were the best team throughout the championship however and thoroughly deserved their grand slam. |

Steward knew exactly what he was doing.
Going from front on position able to make a proper tackle moving so he was side on to make a shoulder charge on Keenan.
Bye current laws straight red ( right or wrong no matter our thoughts its current laws to avoid further litigation on head knocks)
England played better than last week & Ireland seemed startled for long periods of the game due to the expectations & pressures of going for a grand slam |

So he had time to turn instead of actually bending and at least attempt to rap …

Yes. Played at a fairly decent level in the same team as Steve Thompson and Ben Cohen.
But does that really matter?
Does that mean that if anyone hasn’t played at top level that they’re too stupid to have a correct opinion?
That was an accidental collision that he couldn’t do anything about.
Red card my arse.
If Steward had meant it he would have bent into the challenge, leading with his shoulder.
He almost turns his backside into it in anticipation of being taken out.
Add to the fact that his momentum had slowed enough to knock him over and it’s common sense.
Much more the fault of the other player for not being in complete control of his movements.
If he’d done the exact same thing in front of the posts and clattered into the upright, would you be making the same ridiculous claim??
Safety I agree with. But accidents will happen. That doesn’t mean a red card should take away from Ireland only having to beat 14 men for a grand slam which just takes the edge off the whole thing for me. |
