Hate small talk with strangers in public?
I'm not rude and will happily chat politely back and act like I'm interested but inside I'm like I'd rather stab myself in the eye than carry on this conversation
I'm such a social, bubbly and chatty person to the people I want to with, does that made me bad?
Also someone touched my daughter (8 month old) today TWICE whilst talking to me, is there any need
Sorry for the whinge...

I don't mind small talk personally. Mr KC abhors it! I agree with your on the people touching your daughter though. People (often older) sometime have some odd ideas about personal boundaries in that regard...... |

Not to tar them all with the same brush but it was an older person. But yeah, there's just no need, if she had touched her again I'd of said something. I just hate and don't want any confrontation infront of her neither though.
I just wonder what goes through some peoples mind like yeah let's just stroke her like a dog lol, NO

Doesn't make you bad at all.
Can be awkward in a situation where you can't easily get away. Like when you're sat on a busy train or maybe in a theatre.
I'm equally very sociable and chatty but value my own headspace too. X |

Each to their own. "
As in because I'm younger you think?
I did wonder if it had anything to do with it too.

You’re not alone! I spend my working life dealing with people, when I’m shopping/out I’d rather only make small talk with those I want to.
In relation to touching your daughter, I’d have said first time to keep their hands to themselves haha just no need!

Yes you can be trapped in a cafe or I find it happens in supermarket queues. I think I've got a friendly face so people just start up lol.

Completely with you on this. I never say it because I assume people will think I’m a miserable bastard. I’m really not, I’m just not even slightly interested in the thoughts of someone I don’t know (fab forum aside).
I find going to the barbers or being in a taxi interminable - I have to listen to their inane drivel on politics, football, celebrities, their children. Fuuuuck OFF!!! |

Yeah I've always been in jobs too where I have to deal with people (and some idiots) probably why I am the way I am
Honestly, I'm one for speaking out but I just don't want any confrontation infront of her and I feel like some people would snap. I think that's why I didn't, but then feel guilty I didn't.

Yes I don't like it but I always try to engage as I like to listen and give people time as long as they aren't obnoxious. I remember when my daughter started school I'd be dying inside making small talk but now I've made some good friends by making that effort to keep a conversation going. So it's nice to know maybe something good will come out of it but I get that's not for everyone.
I don't like people touching my little one though, especially when she was a baby. And yes, it was always old women. I just tried to remember they didn't mean any harm... but it sure would be nice to ask me first.

Yes, yes and yessss!!! All of that screamed the way I feel
Like I said, with people I want too i.e friends, family, fourm/fab people yes.
She even bought her fucking dog over in a pushchair dam it like look at my dog (this was in a FOOD place) asking if my daughter likes dogs.
At this point I'm dying inside and just look away. Fuck me.

Embrace your inner miserable bastard!!!! I now take a book to the barbers and I have almost mastered answering unsolicited questions with a very closed but civil response. Sometimes even just a noise. I feel like such a curmudgeon!! But, ya know, fuckem. |

Should have just said your daughter has an extreme allergy to dogs and you have an allergy to people babbling drivel! |

Yep I'm with you, any kind of small talk I can't be doing with, it's definitely worse when you've little ones, people always feel the need to comment on them their hair, eyes, coat in a lot of cases then proceed to try and chat, not for me, I'm polite but I hate it.

Honestly. I've been waiting to write this too, it's rude and like you said even worse that it's your child. I just don't want any confrontation infront of her but then I do need to say something so I feel like I can win.

"I like small talk but then I'm old.
Touching the babies of strangers is so out of order though, haven't these people heard of covid before you even consider boundaries"
I know, it makes my blood boil.
But like I've said a few times now, I feel like I don't want to say anything so I don't cause any confrontation infront of her as I'd hate that, but then I don't want anybody touching her...

Is it worth trying to think of a standard line to deal with it? Like "I'm really sorry I have a rule that no-one is allowed to touch my daughter apart from people who know us?" I'm sure other posters will have some ideas too. |
