Seems to have been like this for years - going by some of the comments on some profiles and / or status updates.
It seems there are some on fab who think it's perfectly acceptable or maybe a way of initiating contact.

I was in sainsburys an hour ago. I bumped into an old work colleague,we chatted more joined in, and said how things have changed, stateing that nobody hardly talks nor pays a compliment,and all or most are on their phnes glued to the screen . Got on the bus homeward bound. Looked around,everyone was glued to the frigging Phone!!
Gonna get far worse, mark my words! |

Some people will accept any friend invites even if they've not spoken so people just send them.
It's up to you how you run your profile.
I state on mine I wont respond to random invites but I still get them regarless.
I dont delete them as then they can't send another for I think 30 days. I found when I deleted them I'd get the same names repeatedly.
