I just learnt that apparently Spain is the first country to offer women one day a month paid menstrual leave, no questions asked.
I am curious what people think about this. All opinions welcome. |

"I think it'll be abused and seen as easy time off, great for those actually struggling as someone who gets quite poorly at that time of the month, but easy to take advantage of.

I agree, had this conversation about menopause time off too with a colleague the other day...i m literally never off ill and the person suggesting it has lots of long sick leave...so I was pretty anti it  |

I don't think it's a good idea, women want to be treated equal until they don't. People already abuse the sickness and flexible childcare policies in place, this is just another thing other people will have to pick up the slack for. Also, I bleed for at least 5 days a month so how do I decide which one's the worst. |

My ex got cramps so bad she was hospitalised a few times with them, couldn't walk, use to pass out with pain. It would help someone who suffers, but as always, it's open to abuse by the lazy. |

I kinda agree with this, although I used to bleed for almost 2 weeks and loose so much I'd be severely anaemic and collapse several times during that period, however I never once took a day off because of it.
I think if people had drs notes with conditions like endometriosis which makes it horrible then maybe but I do just see it as an easily abused system.

I don't think "but some people will abuse it" is a reason not to introduce it. Because some people will really benefit and surely that's more important?
Sadly we are so selfish as a society and so many of us are so over worked we see a colleague's absence only as an annoyance. |

I think I am kind of with you on that one. Just because somebody may abuse something - well, we would not have any benefits if this were the criterium for implementing or not implementing it.
I also do not think it threatens women with a lack of equality because menstruation is simply only experienced by women and they are not suggesting to give them a week off at a time, just one day for the worst day and most women know whether that is the first or second or whatever day, or maybe even a few days before, hence no questions asked.

I think it’s a fantastic gesture. Clearly some feedback has been listened to and acted upon, purely in the interests of employee welfare.
It’s reassuring to know they acknowledge that treating people fairly is not necessarily treating all people the same.
Totally recognise the comments above regarding duration etc, probably an impossible task to win that one.
Sadly, I think it will create bad feeling among many and will prove to be unpopular. |

I agree with you - you cannot please everybody equally but if it potentially benefits a large number of people without seriously impacting others, then I would be supporting it. |

Was going to say similar. Great idea but difficult to manage in practice. Particularly as women's periods synch together. Can't all be off at once |

I think it’s a great idea and something I could have definitely done with when I was younger and suffered very badly.
(It’s also something that schools should be more sympathetic to as well as there are days when my poor daughter can barely walk with the pain and then it gets marked as sickness even though she does try and work online.) |

By some days, it would be a maximum of 2 days and it didn’t happen every month.
I pa55ed out from the pain a number of times in my teens. After that I became more accustomed to it.
Hurrah for the menopause
