I sometimes wonder about the origin of sayings when I hear them.

Gordon Bennett - Who was he, what did he do?

Wouldn't touch em with a barge pole - Who touches people with barge poles?

What other weird sayings are there?

I used to wonder about the origin of the phrase “enough room to swing a cat”.

At one point, I used to (humourously) imagine someone in a room swinging a cat around by its tail and saying “yeah, that's enough room alright!”

Are you sure?

My recollection of those days was that we were all far too scared of it happening to make light of it.

Swing a cat - this refers to swinging a

Cat of nine tails. It’s like a whip with nine tails usually with studs on . Used to flog sailors as a punishment. As we understand it you had X amount of lashes on your bare back from the ‘ cat o’ nine tails’.

It was the space to swing a cat of nine tails. So it's an old nautical term.

A strange one I heard more years ago

Was when someone did something accurately

It was cock on

I’m not sure if the intent was it’s so well done it gets me hard

Or

It’s so accurate I could rub my cock over it without abrasion

Or

I’m so in favour of this , if your gonna change or question it your gonna have to go through my limp cock first

Who knows

There's a few that I know the answers to!!

Freeze the balls off a brass monkey!

Metal Square made of brass used for stacking cannonballs on ships they contracted in cold weather spilling the contents!

Hard graft!

Graft is a long thin spade used for digging trenches.

Gormless!

To have gorm daily bottle of wine is an old phrase for saying as intelligence but has falling out of fashion, however gormless remains!

Raining cats and dog

Can't remember exact details but was depictions of two ancient gods one was represented by cats and one was a dog one was that thunder god and the other one was a lightning god possibly Norse cant remember.
