I happily eat bacon twice a week. a friend who is a fitness coach mentioned he has a bacon roll every morning and i pointed out the recent studies linking bacon (and other meats cured in nitrites) to cancer.

He has a recent degree in nutrition but said it was nonsense and he wasnt bothered. If someone like him doesn't believe it i think its a struggle to get "normal" people to believe it

2 bacon rolls in a week is moderation imho, 7 seems excessive.

A quick search on this topic brings up...

ONE Daily Mail outrage bait article using a study done by a DUTCH university about putting confrontational guilt-triggering stickers on meat products in order to deter meat purchases.

NOTHING relevant to the UK at all.

Lovely to see how everything somebody does not agree with can now we called a "woke agenda"

Joke aside, I think we need to listen to all sides and take opposing views into consideration when making a decision.

Unfortunately we are bombarded with so much information and disinformation from people and organisations who have their own agenda - be it woke (that is a compliment incidentally or otherwise.

Yes.

It’s a legal requirement to state where it’s slaughtered if you want to use the country name in the selling process.

EG.

If you wanted to sell it as Scottish Beef you have to put a declaration that it was slaughtered in Scotland.

Can you provide a convincing article suggesting that vegan diets are worse on account of the transport? I've only ever seen the opposite.

Of course, better than a warning would be to factor in the environmental cost and charge you 5 times as much as you're currently paying.

It's just one of those arguments people like to throw out before they've even looked at the statistics -- they do this while momentarily forgetting that meat eaters also consume avocados (for example).

But it might be slaughtered and processed in different countries. If it’s born, bred, slaughtered, processed etc in the same country, you can just say country of origin. So the rule doesn’t seem to be about making you animal slaughterers feel queasy.

Well within the UK it can be different.

To be called Scottish beef it has to be slaughtered there, it also has to have been reared there for a defined period of time by law, but it could then be processed in a meat processing plant over the border.

It just all to do with the legalities of what you can call things relating to where certain things have happened.

You and most others I would suspect, but we all should be aware of what we are eating, whether it’s meat , veg , fruit or anything else, and it’s good to have traceability of food so there can be accountability.

I know what products I eat, I don't need to read the packaging of where it was made or what's in it. If it looks good and tastes good them that's enough for me.

Do you not think the packaging's relevant? I'm pretty sure most people like to be informed of what they're about to ingest. Saying something is 'slaughtered' doesn't put me off eating it, I just don't like the images this conjures up. As I said, it's obvious what's happened to the animal I don't want abbatoir images in my head whilst preparing it. Hypocritical? Yes I guess so *shrugs*

I went in early hours of morning to a abattoir to buy meat when I was in Thailand. It was a bit surreal being able to see the whole process going on as you walked around looking at the meat that had just been prepared.

I don't care as long as my stomach is warm and fed.

Does anyone actually read the packaging?

You and most others I would suspect, but we all should be aware of what we are eating, whether it’s meat , veg , fruit or anything else, and it’s good to have traceability of food so there can be accountability.

I know what products I eat, I don't need to read the packaging of where it was made or what's in it. If it looks good and tastes good them that's enough for me.

doesn't that mean you don't know what products you eat? You don't know what's in it."

I just need to know what the main thing is, lean mince is lean mince. Beef steak is beef steak etc.

But I generally find "woke" is used pejoratively by reactionaries. e.g. meat eaters dismayed at it being brought to their attention that they're harming the environment. How can their use of the word woke be used as an argument for eating meat?

Meat is costing us all, as well as the world, very dearly. And it's costing lives, which will increase exponentially as time progresses.

We can try to pretend many things, including that our choices and behaviour do not affect others. This is selfish, when we are causing harm and refuse to care.

I don't know what the proposed labels are suggested to include. I guess that the language and message isn't as strong and direct enough, that the actual harms would warrant.

We can play with words like 'woke', feigning ignorance, etc. We need to get real and to behave responsibly and as our maturity truly leads us to.

Humans are causing catastrophic harm to our world, including ourselves, by the pursuit of animal farming as we do. This approach is a choice - we could produce meat very differently. But it's still likely to be very harmful. It's a very inefficient use of land, energy and resources, that could be significantly better if deployed via alternative means.

Our meat production methods are largely something that shouts how stupid our species is.

I agree it's nothing to do with woke.

But all non sustainable products imported from unsustainable factory farming should carry warning labels things like asparagus avocados everything containing palm oil and unsustainable grown meat such as factory farms in America and also grown in sustainable areas such as clearing rainforest to fatten beef.

But food would need to be double the price push good food out of the rech of poorer families we need to look at sustainability not maet is bad vag has no protein there would also be a problem with food security with rich country buying up the food to let poor country suffer starvation..

Food shortages already wholesale charges we see a drop in production but its OK as it would only be the countries without a means to buy in foods.

Deer populations in the US and UK, as well as elsewhere, do need management. It's partly due to the loss of former predators and how we've impacted on the natural environment.

But the majority of human meat farming isn't from deer populations. Our over-reach into ever more virgin rainforest etc, clearances for human food production, with a tiny number of animal species grown due to our greed and lack of appropriate care, is reflective of our myopic vision.

I think it's something to consider. These pets are bred for domestication, and they consume meat that's produced for their consumption. So yep, seems inconsistent for vegans to have pets.

"Mmmmmmmm shortage of out of season vegetables and we can not eat one thing the UK is very good at growing.

Look like it's turnips all round!

Baldric will be happy.

That's made the whole thread worth reading "

"I happily eat bacon twice a week. a friend who is a fitness coach mentioned he has a bacon roll every morning and i pointed out the recent studies linking bacon (and other meats cured in nitrites) to cancer.

He has a recent degree in nutrition but said it was nonsense and he wasnt bothered. If someone like him doesn't believe it i think its a struggle to get "normal" people to believe it

2 bacon rolls in a week is moderation imho, 7 seems excessive.

"

My father lived to a ripe age of 97, he ate meat all his life, ate a bacon roll every morning and grew up on meat sausages and mince.

A very strong man through to the end.

"Meat is costing us all, as well as the world, very dearly.

Our meat production methods are largely something that shouts how stupid our species is. lol ok how are you going to control a deer population that can't sustain itself . Cull humans ?

Deer populations in the US and UK, as well as elsewhere, do need management. It's partly due to the loss of former predators and how we've impacted on the natural environment.

But the majority of human meat farming isn't from deer populations. Our over-reach into ever more virgin rainforest etc, clearances for human food production, with a tiny number of animal species grown due to our greed and lack of appropriate care, is reflective of our myopic vision. "

I never seen a cow in the wild. What do you suggest let them all run free?

"What do other think of banning all carnivorous pets as a means to saving the planet?

I am genuinely interested I have a dog and would love to keep him.

I think it's something to consider. These pets are bred for domestication, and they consume meat that's produced for their consumption. So yep, seems inconsistent for vegans to have pets."

Serve them vegan dog food

They put warning labels on cigarettes don’t suppose it stops smokers buying them so will a warning on meat turn everyone into a Vegan, not likely. It won’t make any difference to my choices. Anyway we can’t all go veggie there’s no veggie in the shops at the moment

I'm sure there's a Harry Enfield sketch taking the piss out of such arguments. But I couldn't find it.
