Wine drinking Mum shaming
Jump to: Newest in thread
"A lady comedian claims to be mum shamed because she was drinking a glass of wine whilst breastfeeding her newborn.
Is this allowed?
What's going on here girls. It's all over the news "
Mum shamed FFS.
Adding the word shamed onto something now seems to be an excuse for all sorts of behaviour.
I certainly would have "tutted loudly"and given a disapproving look.

"I’m almost certain you’re not meant to drink alcohol or even have caffeine when breastfeeding."
I think they brought in a rules that you can drink at the same time as breast feeding but its only for the adult breast feeder while the kids asleep . I read it somewhere or maybe just made it up . |

I was a trained breastfeeding peer supporter not long ago.
Yes, you can drink alcohol whilst breastfeeding. The biggest concern when nursing and drinking alcohol is the ability to look after the baby/child as well as you would when you didn't have a drink. Also the fact judgement is impaired and it is incredibly dangerous to fall asleep in the same bed as a baby/child when under the influence of alcohol (or drugs).
Those concerned should read up the following sites:
The Breastfeeding Network
La Leche League GB
You should not take reference from the NHS website or "experts" on breakfast shows. Even GPs aren't trained enough to hand out advice regarding this.
I didn't drink when breastfeeding as we bed shared for a number of years.

I think it’s 2 hours before but they recommend not drinking at all. As a parent I wouldn’t do anything that could potentially harm my child. |

People will criticise a mother without a second thought. Then fire up their car and drive it along a busy street with children and babies in it.
Mother and children are easy targets and their critics rarely stop to think |

You can drink caffeine too. Absolutely no issues whatsoever.
Obviously drinking excess alcohol is a bad idea, but the general guidance from breastfeeding support services is that if you remain sufficiently sober to look after your baby properly, then whatever level of drink you've consumed to that point is fine. That's different for different people.
I chose not to drink alcohol and breastfeed but then again, I rarely drink alcohol now when I am not breastfeeding. |

No harm in it. As a society we seem to have become anxious and worried about every last thing. No reason to shame women for doing this. |

“Regularly drinking above the recommended limits can be harmful for you and your baby.” The recommended limits is around 2 units a day so one large glass of wine exceeds that.
I’ll admit the caffeine thing was taken from the back of an energy drink so maybe that relates to extreme amounts of caffeine.

Nothing wrong with a drink while breastfeeding, she's probably had 9 months without I don't think anyone would bat an eye at a glass of wine, a few bottles is different, leave mums be, it's a fucking hard job.

Anyone drinking beyond the recommended limits is harming themselves. There's a world of difference between having a glass of wine with dinner as a breastfeeding mother, vs a whole bottle every night. There's nothing wrong with the former at all, but some people would treat the mother like she's taken a knife to her own child's throat, which is shaming behaviour.
Caffeine in normal amounts, e.g. tea and coffee is fine. The energy drink people have to put warnings on things to cover their arses, the same way as medication manufacturers do. Most prescription medicine is also fine to take when breastfeeding, but the package says something different. |

Can I ask why you don't advocate advice from the NHS Website?

What was shaming about it? I said I was “almost certain” I didn’t question her motives or her parenting skills.
I also said as a parent I wouldn’t do anything that could potentially harm my child. Alcohol whilst breastfeeding can potentially harm a child as stated in the link you posted. |

Katherine Ryan posted the picture knowing full well what the reaction would be. Is it shaming or is it baiting by a celebrity desperate to stay relevant?
Part of her job is literally to stay relevant. She wouldn't be much of a comedian if she wasn't.
By being funny. Whatever your view on drinking whilst breastfeeding is it surely isn’t a laughing matter.
Well there's a whole other debate on what's appropriate for comedy and what isn't and if being funny is the only role a comedian fulfills.
She's certainly got people discussing breastfeeding, motherhood and alcohol
I wonder what the reaction would be had her partner been sat bottle feeding the baby with a pint in his other hand.
I don't know. I suspect that people would have made all sorts of assumptions about him ranging from he's an alcoholic to what a good bloke he was looking after his own baby.
That last bit, although true is really sad. That men are praised for looking after their own children."

Irrespective of Katherine Ryan, are you happy to accept that breastfeeding women can indeed drink moderately and imbibe caffeine, because your original comments were actually the ones I found more shaming. I have zero idea what Katherine Ryan has or has not done recently.
What was shaming about it? I said I was “almost certain” I didn’t question her motives or her parenting skills.
I also said as a parent I wouldn’t do anything that could potentially harm my child. Alcohol whilst breastfeeding can potentially harm a child as stated in the link you posted. "
It only harms if taken in amounts about the recommended level. No-one should be drinking above the recommended level, whether they are breastfeeding women or men or whoever. Women having one glass of wine at lunch and breastfeeding are routinely shamed in public by busybodies coming and telling them what they should and shouldn't do. It's not limited to alcohol either. I once had a waitress refuse to serve me a spicy tomato pasta dish because she believed that the spice would harm my baby (also bollocks).
Having been a breastfeeding mother, you are routinely judged and shamed for every fucking thing you do. It's tiresome. |

My mum was stunned and surprised that Mr N not only parented our two but also cooked and cleaned when I was at work in much the same way I did when he was at work. She also genuinely believed that if my brother left his wife and had custody of their children that social services would give him help to get them ready for school and look after them until he came home from work. I had to explain that this wouldn't happen for him any more than for a separated mother. She was outraged because it wasn't fair |

I think that is proof that not being breastfed and eating spicy stuff as a baby had no adverse affect on him whatsoever |

There’s loads of benefits to eating spicy foods. Jamie Oliver (I can’t stand him) even tried to find milder chillies to add to food so people who don’t like spice could take advantage of the benefits. |

I find it irresponsible to post a pic like that. Many people won't understand and just think it's ok to get pissed up when looking after a baby, because she is doing it and she's rich and famous.
Not everyone can read or understand guidelines etc. |

I knew you'd be taking about Katherine Ryan, she regularly posts pics of her drinking wine while feeding.
I think it's good to educate people that nothing is off limits when breastfeeding as even from these comments people are confused about the facts.
I breastfed for years but didn't drink because I also co-slept with my baby and that's when it becomes a no no |

What CAN mums do? There was a wave of social media debates about mum’s should ask a baby’s permission before changing their nappie. Some said this was just to teach consent from a young age and some said this was to respect the baby’s consent.
I get so angry when people judge mums. I work with so many mums who are on the edge of ending their lives and it’s only the thought of their kids that gets them through. When I say so many, I mean at the beginning it’s like “aww your kids mean so much this is like a movie” and now it’s something I’ve heard more times than I can count or even remember. These mums just trying their hardest, then take their kids to school in a dressing gown and they end up on a local social media page with a debate about how scratty they are.
Sorry for the rant. Idk about alcohol and breastfeeding…
Also this is general not aimed at the OP |
