What stupid things have your elderly relatives done?
My dear old mother, bless’er, used to keep her mobile turned off. She’d turn it on to text me a question then turn it off again for days at a time. |

My mum isn’t even old (55) and does this. I texted her the other day and didn’t hear for days as she had left her phone in the car. She lives 300 miles away, good job it wasn’t an emergency |

Her phone battery must last a good year or two |

I had only messaged to say my number had changed. About 3 days later, she messaged back a simple “Y?” Then sent a further message asking how the dog was.
Love you too mum |

My mother (65) has just confessed that she's never listened to my voice messages on WhatsApp because she didn't know how too. I'd get a message back saying she couldn't hear me. My sister showed her how to over Christmas |

He’s ok but I suspect he’d quite like to go back to his Grandma’s gaff |

"How long have you got? "
Absolutely. Basically, anything involving technology "goes wrong" or "is faulty". Currently I'm 7 months into sorting out a wildlife camera for them, which works perfectly for me but apparently never works for them.
I actually retrieved it from them yesterday, to me it seems to have been recording perfectly, though I now have to show them a video of a massive rat on their bird table. |

Yes. But...my mum died just under a year ago, dad's on his own after 67 years of marriage we do have our patience tested but never let it show. I tend to unload on other people and laugh about it, like we are here |

Oh I am sorry to hear about that. 67 years marriage is a long time! Poor chap must be finding it hard. My dad is in a similar position but to a lesser extent. And luckily he’s a pretty switched on guy - he’s got an iPhone and iPad and knows how to use them!
But he still writes shaky hand cheques, bless him. |

All the crazy things my Dad has done are due to dementia, so it's not exactly him just being eccentric. He's lost his car (drove to train station; went to town. Caught bus home, having forgotten his morning routine). We confiscated his car not long after.
He's left his keys in the front door, his house is on a busy main road and not the most salubrious area.
He obsessively checks his email about 20 times an hour but deletes everything he's read instantly. Then forgets the content but can't re-read.
He's got on the wrong bus and I've had drivers ring me for instructions about where to send him home by taxi.
Those sorts of thing. |

"Not wearing hearing aids because you can hear things with them "
My Dad does this too. According to his audiologist, wearing them when alone at home is important to maintain cognitive function, because the brain is dealing with all those little sounds in the background. Dad forgets, though.... *Facepalm* |

As you know my mum died last year, we still haven't found her hearing aids. My dad is badly in need of help with his hearing but won't consider it. Phone calls with him have taken on a slightly comical but nightmarish quality and face to face it's obvious that he's not hearing what we're saying but pretending he has. The volume of the TV being set to 80 is a clue |

I see this in clinic a lot, the results are obvious but they insist they're fine and I've spent the appointment almost shouting

When I come back from my dad's it takes me about an hour to stop the shouting voice. It's clearly affecting his cognitive ability and he's missing important information at hospital appointments etc, I listen to his voicemails when I'm there because he tells me people just mumble.
Not a lot I can do if he won't get it sorted and he often tells me off saying
" No need to shout, I'm not deaf you know" |

Thankfully I still have most of my marbles where technology is concerned |

The combination of early onset dementia (a few yrs ago) and a generous nature plus the internet led to two king size mattresses being ordered, one for him for his single bed and the other to fit a standard double ..
Glad the company were understanding, love him.. |

But haven’t we all spent our lives saying “i definitely will NOT turn out like my parents!”
When I was young I promised myself I’d be a cool parent and would let the kids do fun stuff, that I wouldn’t tut and shake my head at yoofs, that I’d listen to cool music. Nope! |

Very true.
My dad spends 75% of his time in 1947 and the other 25% not understanding 2023. I'll probably be the same but existing in 1974 |

For some reason, one of my cousins thought it would be a good idea to get my 96yr old nanna an 'Alexa' for Xmas.
My mam showed her how to play some old songs she liked.... Within 10 mins of getting home she was already on the phone to my mam... 'what's this woman's name again, I can't remember and she won't stop singing' |

Went on holiday to Tenerife for 3 months and left the back door unlocked...
Tried to knock a seagull nest down with bamboo canes, he had a licence. He tied 3 together and ended up in hospital with chest pains and remembers none of it.... |
