It's wrong at least at the mo if its an emergency n u hav no credit u can still make the call, in a bad scenario this could put someone's life in serious jepody all coz u can't afford call to get them the help they need! We pay out taxes for this to continue to be free! |

what if you are on pay as you go and have no credit, how can you call 999 then? or you have no change for a phone box and you see a accident while out
Seems a daft idea to me |

I wonder how many people teach their children '999' in an emergency. How is a child supposed to be able to work out the difference between 999 and 101?
This is a stupid proposal dreamt up by some stupid asshole looking at a balance sheet and not real life. |

i was taught 112 is the number to use as it uses GPRS to detect you location immediately and directs your call to the local call centre straight away rather than 999 that takes your call to a general call centre |

As someone who works on the other end of the 999 system this is ludicrous. Yes it may stop hoax calls but as you've all already mentioned, what about people with no money? And the people on low income who it might defer from calling because of the cost and results in someone dying? I don't mean from the obvious like someone being stabbed but for people with chest pain who think, oh that phone call is gonna cost me an arm and a leg, I'll be alright! I don't think this will ever or should ever be contemplated |

That'll teach me to post before I read up on something. The person suggesting the premium rate 999 number is a Scottish policeman who has stated that he only suggested it to raise awareness of the problems facing control-room staff. He knows full well that the 999 service cannot be a charge-per-use service but that doesn't detract from the level of hoax calls and non-emergency calls made to the 999 hotline clogging up the system. |

If a child is taught to call in an emergency then it would be 999..... |

My kids are both in their 20's so that number was never an option when they were younger...

The problem is, people's ideas of emergencies differ. Something that might seem like a little medical problem that they can wait to see their doctor for might be the the end of the world for someone else. I see and hear it everyday. Yes it might stop the genuine hoax callers or the so called regular ones who only call because they're lonely but I don't think it would dramatically affect the number of calls |

I called 999 when my car went on fire and they could only hear my first sentance and it went funny, but I could hear the operator talking to the Fire brigade telling them where I was, what number I was calling from and even the network I am using....so they must be able to figure out lots of things on the 999 call too.
Did I ever mention that TWO fire engines full of fire bobbies turned up? |

Mine can dial 999 without unlocking the keypad |

I put the link to the story up to show people it was only 1 Tayside Policeman's view that was reported in our local paper then taken up by the Nationals, I doubt very much that it will ever happen |

"there will be 111 service from the end of january for ambulance non emergency replacing nhs direct in kent "
We have that in London already, it's pretty much the same thing as nhsd really! It's just encouraging people to use them more then dialling 999 for minor ailments x |

I was taught different numbers as a kid,
112 and 110 depending on the emergency, but then I was also taught the emergency had to include a fire,
or someone that will not wake up (having been poked hard in the eye)
is bleeding lots or when cars hit people or each other.
Otherwise I was to fetch an adult.
Back then we didnt have mobile phones on us and I can see it must be annoying to have so many hoax calls, or my cats stuck emergency calls |

If it cut down on hoax/waste of time calls so people who were in an emergency got a speedier response I wouldn't automatically worry. After all if you are in an emergency situation the cost of the call is not even a consideration. |

Apparently if you dial 911 you are put through to emergency services. |

You will still get through to a 999 centre, have to give your details, and then be routed to fire, police, or ambulance control for your location. |

111 is being rolled out across the whole country and by the end of june 08454647 will cease to exist. The government has invited bids from local oohs services and ambulance trusts to run each area. |
