Knowing a few mechanics and more in the garage trade, most say its the driving experience that like about them which in turn sells them, lovely to drive but crap to maintain due to very high repair bills. |

They are just too technically complicated for their own good. I have a 1986 Landrover 110. I’ve had it nearly 30 years and it’s never let me down, not broken down or failed to start. |

Just selling my original green oval money pit (Classic LSE) and down to only one money pit (3 door facelift Freelander 1)
Most modern cars are designed for ten years life. When many land rovers are thirty years old and going strong.
But yes, they can be a pain in the wallet, but so much fun to drive.

Completely agree, things were manufactured to last years ago. 3.9 ( Running on LPG ) Classic was my 1st proper LR

I assumed the original ones were right handed but no doubt at some time subsequently they decided to attract Ford drivers! |

I work for a Land Rover dealership...
We frequently have them turn up on the back of a truck. Often it's because the owners have skipped services other times they've been ragged off-road and something has broken.

I am a devotee of the Land Rover, and over the years have driven many variants, and had the privilege of ‘abusing’ them as they were designed to be, and had them in many precarious places I would never have thought they could get through - but they did!
… I also owned a couple of Discovery’s previously.
…however, the new Land Rover defender is nothing more than a rich man’s play thing? hanging on go it’s heritage with the name - very sad.

I had several landrovers over years no better no worse than any other make. Have discovery sport now 4 had since new now coming up to 4 year old. It's let me down once with turbo. 2 bits of advice I had is service it at 12k not 21 k like landrover say plus make sure it as good 40min plus run to warm clean exhaust filter once a month. Nothing worse than just school run etc. |

I drive for work and Land Rover products do seem to be one of the more regularly recovered vehicles than others.
Saw 2 separate new shape Defenders on the back of AA trucks today. And from personal experience my old man had a brand new Disco which has its air suspension fail within 4 weeks of delivery.

Wife has a 1955 series one. She will never part with it, a real Trigger’s broom of a car. Not much can’t be fixed with a bungee strap, zip tie or a hammer. It needs no road tax, no mot, it’s 4 wheel drive, also a convertible and can carry 7 people. Insurance is £40 per year and the value of the vehicle is appreciating. They make a lot of sense until you experience driving it! She must just love the vibrations |

Years ago now, replaced my Discovery Series 1 (300 series) with a brand new Series 2 TD5. About 6 months later, had a recall...something to do with the ABS, needing the fuel tank to be dropped out. Got it back, went away for a couple of days. Got back home, had to go out again and saw a trail of wet stuff follow me down the drive. Stopped and got out to see half a tank of diesel pour out of the tank. According to Solihull, had the garage (main dealer) followed procedures, it couldn't have happened!! Did ask Solihull to put that in writing, but of course they wouldn't.
As I told the garage, if the leak had happened 30 mins drive time earlier, I'd have been in the outside lane of M25.....no power, no servo brakes, no power steering, and a skating rink behind me! To be fair, they came and took it away, sorted it, filled the tank (90 litres) , and pressure washed my drive (took them 3 days to clean it).
It's not just the build quality!! |

I had a love/ hate relationship with them having access through work to a Discovery, my daily runabout, two Vogues and a 110 Defender, all reasonably new. I loved them when they were working, hated them when they were not, which was most of the time. The Defender was the exception. It never let me down and was my go to for getting in and out of stupid places. It was just so bloody uncomfortable to drive and basic. |

We've got a couple of Defender 90 Carpathian Edition's in at work at the moment. 518 angry horsepower and a sexy matte grey wrapped exterior. They're an absolute hoot to drive too. Hitting 60 in a tad over 5 seconds in a car that big is surreal. I do have a bit of a soft spot for the new Defender and it seems to be the more reliable vehicle if the range...
I hate the Velar with a passion though. There's nothing about that car that makes any sense.

 impressive spec. as well as a hefty prize tag of $114K compared to the Yukon which delivers similar if not an all round better performance at nearly half the prize tag of $77K and seats more passengers.  |

But undoubtedly styled for pushing back out into the single file traffic outside the school once Tarquin has been dropped off and it's time to go and park at the gym. |

Having driven a Yukon for a few weeks in Florida I can say, without a shadow of doubt, that the Yukon is an appalling drive compared to the Defender Carpathian. The gearbox is hilarious at best and the body roll gives you seasickness!! It may be more reliable but I couldn't comment because I haven't driven either of them enough to compare.
There's a 110 Carpathian that seats 7 too. |

never driven so will take your word for it, only going of review from online motorists. Guessing true appreciation can only be gained after experiencing an all terrain test drive incl. many other vehicles. On paper the Yukon easily makes more sense saving a whopping $37K. |

I once bought a new Shogun the same month as a neighbour bought a discovery. His spent most of the first year in the garage being repaired. He used to curse it. I had the Shogun for 7 years and did over 200,000 miles in it. It was off road on a regular basis too.
The only thing I ever had to do to it other than regular services was tyres and break pads. The tyres would last over 60,000 miles with the deeper treads! It was one of the best cars I've ever had. Unfortunately Mitsibushi have now pulled out of the uk |

Can believe that, since I've yet to meet an owner/driver who sings praises for their Discovery. Plenty other better vehicles to maybe consider like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota 4Runner, Lexus GX, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Sequoia, Lexus LX at a fraction of the cost. |

Must admit the Jaguar Land Rover Defender V8 Carpathian does look great and has excellent reviews, only down side is the mpg. However, when spending that much money on a vehicle I don't believe one would care about the mpg. |

The Range Rover SVR is also quite impressive. Silly speed and absolute luxury (while the gadgets work). They don't really encapsulate the whole "go anywhere" ethos of traditional Land/Range Rovers though. |

...it's the "go anywhere" spirit that makes certain Land Rovers gr8. Ive not driven the V8 Carpathian but having read the spec. and seen footage on YouTube, must say it's very impressive. Looks and performance. |

The first one I drove scared me a little at first. It takes a second to hoist it's skirt and then it takes off with terrifying ferocity and accelerates like a car half its size, the 110 is even more surprising. The only disappointment is the exhaust has been muted a bit so the supercharged V8 soundtrack is a bit quiet. |

Anecdotally What's at halfords getting headline fitted because I've become lazy and talking to the fitter he says the s Range Rover is 600 pounds to change a battery because they have to remove the top half of the engine. |

That's weird because it's under the drivers seat and there's an access panel in the cabin. This is why you don't let Halfrauds touch your car!
New batteries do need to be coded though but that's not unusual on cars after 2005. |

I’ve had three LR products, two discoveries and one rr sport. The discoveries were fine but rr sport was shockingly bad. That being said…wouldn’t stop me ruling out another. |

Iv series and a 2002 110 double cab defender
that’s worked hard had old Range Rover discos ect wouldn’t want anything they sell new now other than as posein car ?? |

The 110 with its 525BHP certainly ticks all the boxes: specification, looks and performance. Probably there isn't a better all terrain vehicle than this...!

I owned a Discovery sport. 2.0ltr diesel 66 plate. Ingenium engine. The timing chain failed at 34k. Luckily I was doing about 10 mph when failure occurred.AA towed me to dealership, very close to where I live. I had extended warranty on vehicle. Still took a lot of arguments between garage and JLR to repair. In the end JLR did fix , but refused to fit new engine. I was lucky . Made a major complaint to dealership from where purchased. They purchased back from me ( due to proving dealership at fault about sale / servicing , checks done prior sale to me). This engine looking online has be known for this and other faults. JLR refuse to do a recall. So now back with Honda . |

A question for an Land Rover fitter specialist, what is the craic with engine oil pump failure on some newer discovery's that result in a blown engine and a replacement engine required, is it worth renewing these parts before they fail, I am led to believe this needs the body removing but one guy reckons he can do that in two hours? |

On second Range Rover Evoque in 7 yeas no problems dose long runs and servicing every 12k not 21 as recommended. Also don't use supermarket fule and fill up once a month with supper to help clean fule system. As VW failed because of bad cheep fule.

If you look at my previous post. Plus look up on internet forums. Ingenium engine Discovery failure. You will find many posts about these engines and bills for repair / replacing engines. From when JLR said repair could go ahead. Took about ten days for work to be completed. Engine from what I was informed, has to be removed from car to do work. |

Yeah, pretty much everything under the bonnet needs to come out. The engine then needs to be totally stripped to properly repair. It's a huge job. Ford are having similar issues with blocked oil ways causing timing chain failure, we had one in last month that required a new engine as it was cheaper than repairing the failed one. It'd only done 16k miles. |

"A question for an Land Rover fitter specialist, what is the craic with engine oil pump failure on some newer discovery's that result in a blown engine and a replacement engine required, is it worth renewing these parts before they fail, I am led to believe this needs the body removing but one guy reckons he can do that in two hours?

Just to add. Discovery was in a JLR dealership for repair. As I said , did not pay anything. Was informed at first. New engine to fit cost £10k to £13k.
Repair between £5k to £10k . On forums which looked at , even now saying approx same cost. JLR sometimes offering to pay some contribution. |

Lol, there's some rubbish being spouted here.
Just about any car with premium design features are going to be less reliable and more costly to repair. Many cheap 'alternatives' out there, the trade off is that they won't come close in build, or more importantly (for me), drive quality.
I can tell, there's a few trying to compare apples to oranges. |

I’ve been driving JLR products for 20 years
In that time 1 yes 1 issue a rubber band broke on the accessory drive belt
Off the road for less than two hours
Had Audis and Vw product no where near as reliable |

Officially we understand they are voted the UK’s most unreliable vehicle? Can anyone verify this ?
We had a new Discovery once . Bought a 7 seater when we had 4 young children and for all 6 of us to go out . I, John bought it as I thought my wife would feel somehow protected or safe with 3 young children and a baby onboard and I wouldn’t worry about them . How wrong could I be !
Every time they went out in the blo..y thing I’d worry, my wife would worry, the eldest child would worry. In fact they went out in a 25 year old relic we had rather than that whenever they could.
We polished it up all ready for a wedding with the ribbons once and it broke down. Another night we were to go to a Ball and pick up 4 friends on the way - it broke down .
Driving along the motorway on holiday the back window just broke. Try driving with no back window and a baby in a child seat! The spray all came in off the road 150 miles from home!
The dealer said - sorry we can’t get the glass because we’d modified it by tinting it . Codswallop! We never did , it was new out of their showroom!
Air suspension packed up loads of times. Sensors, the compress etc etc.Handbrake never worked. It would get fixed for the mot only to fail soon afterwards. Cost a fortune every year! Tailgate wouldn’t open etc etc.
Top of the range radio and 6 stack cd player. Each occupant could plug in headphones and listen to something different sir ! What a load of old B..locks that was !!! Radio and clock all packed up at 13 months old( only £6k to fix it sir! )Told the dealer we’d sing instead! Had an old clock on the dash for the time.
Lost track of the number of times it went into limp mode for no apparent reason. Very very frightening if you happen to be in lane 2 or 3 of a motorway when this happens!
We’d just stick in lane 1 all time behind the lorries at 40 mph on hills etc. No way would you ‘dare’ to overtake incase it reverted to limp mode.
We know why they named them a ‘ Discovery’ . Because every time you went out in it , you never knew what you were coming home in !!
Now our eldest daughter has a young baby her husband has made the same mistake as us !
He bought one for her to feel safe in ! We’ve rescued her and her baby twice in 5 months so far - let alone her husband and the recovery services. Last time I waited in Tesco car park for the recovery service whilst My wife fetched our daughter and her baby home. So galling to be stood there waiting to be recovered and seeing other mums coming out of the shop and jumping into a little car and zooming off .
Told our daughter- ‘’ history always repeats itself’’.
Ended up selling ours to a garage at 6 years old for spares or repair for basically scrap value . No one wanted to take it in part exchange.
Trust us - one ‘ LANDROVER’ is enough for anyone in a lifetime!
The old adage springs to mind - quoted on Top Gear !
If you want to go on a safari- you go in a Landrover.
If you want to ‘COME BACK’ from safari
- you go in a Toyota Landcrusier.
Never a truer word spoken.
We REALLY REALLY hope that some JLR people know how we and hundreds, if not thousands of people feel and have been let down by the brand and also the dealer network.
Remember- buy British!
